Title: Rumor of the US Postal Service shutting down?
Post by: Blazejuggalo420 on April 22, 2012, 03:04 am
http://technorati.com/politics/article/is-the-us-postal-service-close/

So I looked and I didn't find anything about this subject and I'm surprised I didn't. Even though that is an old article and it said it was supposed to happen early this year. Does anyone know if USPS is all good now, is that why I couldn't find anything about this topic? I mean I think it would be an epic blow to the US SR market.

It will never stop. Services can slower and jobs will be cut but the service will always be around.

They are closing lot's of stations and reducing first class mail delivery to every 3 days or something instead of having to get it out everyday. So lot's of delays.

The US government, and national and local governments all over the world are broke.
They begrudgingly admit this when arguing about how much to cut the RATE  OF INCREASE IN BORROWING (code for printing/devaluing).
They are talking about the rate the problem is growing!!!! Not the size of the problem if you took a snapshot in time of it!!!

This is national...states can't print money, they are even more screwed, in the short run.....everyone screwed completely in the long run.

US copied it's postal structure from Britain, putting an exiled Ben Franklin, an opportunist if there ever was one, in charge.
Government control of first class mail in those days meant control to intercept most all communication. They got a hold of Ma Bell just as soon as they saw the potential to loose this control, like they want to kill, or regulate for our own good, the internet today.

But in the 18?? (I don't remember) a guy named Lysander Spooner set up his own first class mail service. While the feds had been running things there was no law against private competition at that point. He outperformed them to a point of both embarrassment and loosing control of communications.
It wasn't long before they made it illegal for anyone but the US federal government to deliver first class mail, running Spooner out of business. And to this day it is a crime to put so much as a Car Wash flyer in a mailbox designated for first class mail.
Only through parcel loopholes did UPS and FedEx get established.

They, along with others, would kick the USPS's ass in mail delivery, what's left of it, especially if they could avoid complete control under a federal regulatory body, which only serves to hinder efficiency and give fatcat jobs (benes, pensions...all the stuff they are going broke trying to deliver now) under the guise of protecting us...again.

Private mail left to it's own choices in policy, in a climate of decriminalization, would be the best thing for drug users. Add in a huge reduction in "moral stigma" and the crime that goes with use would all but dissappear. So would the ridiculous profits.

But they wouldn't move to do that until the buildings were actually falling around them, still fully denying what they have done to the most productive life force nature has created.
So mail will go away largely, what would be first class will find it's way into FedEx envelopes more and more and they will try to drive as many approaching retirement "postal" and make them quit so they can rehire new people under more realistic contracts.

Or I could be wrong.

When the fuck is this silly talk going to end? Every fuckhead gets everyone paranoid around here with total bullshit. The  USPS is not shutting down.

You sound like those fucktards that think the world is going to end in 2012. Or those other losers the preppers.

Just do your drugs and be high and happy. EVERYONE can have an opinion but can it least be smart and  fact based not some stupid crazy shit?

That's just a fact Rx King. If somebody with a million dollars in credit card debt told you they managed to reduce their monthly interest payments by 10%, while the interest rate used by the credit card company was almost certainly set to increase and that person also was forking out money left, right and center for consumer goods, then you'd not have a lot of confidence in their 'financial plan'.

The truth is always in the numbers, always. If the numbers don't stack up, then nothing else matters and no amount of talking will solve the problem.

That the western developed world is in serious debt is without question. The only other times Economists and Historians can remember us getting into this much debt was World War I, II. So, it's not exactly this weird whacky conspiracy theory.

The USPS is financially fragile.  The director's plan called for shutting down some offices and processing centers.  This has not been decided yet, congress has to get involved first, and they aren't doing anything important in an election year.

It appears a lot of  USPS's problem is that congress forced them to overpay into the postal pension fund (something like $5 billion over) and then dawdled over allowing them to raise rates, to become solvent.  It looks like someone wants the USPS to fail.

But on the closings and reduced deliveries etc, nothing has been decided yet.

I for one would be happy to see the USPS shut down some of their stations and generally reduce their workforce. Even if deliveries were slowed by a couple days, that's just less manpower that would go into checking packages and possibly finding those all-important deliveries everyone here craves.

usps will never shut down and this is probably all a scam to get the union decertified because it costs to damn much. Union is fine and all but the wages just rise too fast and over a long time the wages and perks just get to high which is why the the postal service is fucked. Every time union renews contract they just drive another nail in the coffin of the psotal service. When usps ends up totaly broke government will step in and and destroy the union and usps will be fine again starting with lower wages and getting actual work out of posties again.

when you have posties earning $40 an hour working 3 hours a day but getting paid for 8 along with 8 weeks paid vacation, fuck load of sick days, huge pension, awesome medical and all that for workers with no college degree you have a problem. eventually everything will have to go down to make usps viable again. usps is already asking the government to step in to help with union because of some stupid rules where they have to put aside a huge chunk every year for pensions. Unions are slowly being phased out which kind of makes sense since they were before the time of minimum wage and shit. government regulates enough now unions really arent needed
