Title: Time for some Karma!
Post by: DigitalAlch on March 04, 2012, 06:52 am
Hey folks!

As the forum has grown larger and, admittedly, a bit unruly, it seems high time to help people know who our best contributors are. Many of you will no doubt be familiar with the Karma feature found on many forums these days, and will be happy to see its implementation here on Silk Road Forums.
For those of you who don't know what it is, you now have the ability to 'Thank' someone for a post should you find it particularly informative, well written, and all around helpful. You also now have the ability to 'discourage' someone should you find their behavior inappropriate. All of this translates into a Karma Rating, seen beneath the avatar on your post. If someone has a particularly high karma rating, you know they are helpful, more likely to be a trustworthy member to ask help from, or to take advice from. On the other hand if they have a negative karma scoring, you know not to take much stock in their advice!

The amount of positive / negative karma you can give is very limited, so use it wisely! Thank you guys for continuing to make this a shining community, hopefully, this will help shine a light on some of our wonderful members. Only members with over 100 post can distribute karma, and only one point every 3 days.

Lots of love,
DigitalAlch

I think this is a pretty good idea. There's a lot of people here willing to share their advice and experience and it's great to able to commend them on their efforts. In fact, SR is the only place I feel comfortable in both RL and on the web talking to people about serious adult topics.

Dang, I wasted my points trying to thank each of the mods right off the bat before reading this. Speaking of which I just left two karma points??

Great idea! Thanks

I just hope my ranting about people not using their heads and cussing while Im dope sick doesnt make people not like me :) Just Kittens (jk)

This community is amazing and its great to see it continuously evolving.

Edit - I actually have left 3 points now, each for Nomad, DigitalAlch and Chronic Pain. Do I get a point of karma per 100 posts?

Since we're going with mythical principles can I exchange any Karma I get for just some straight up Reincarnation?

I think it will prove to be a great addition DigitalAlch. Better than what most people do, which is trust by post count alone. :)

I get excited every time I see implementations of good ideas here :)

I think it would be better if forum members were judged on the merits of their posts rather than a somewhat nebulous ratings/popularity system.  That being said, I'll reserve judgment--I just hope we don't end up with people making posts blatantly seeking karma.  I definitely wouldn't mind lowering moonbear's karma score a bit though...

Jeez just read up on this Karma thing after seeing a -1 under my name.  I never thought I was a big negative nellie, kinda would like to know what I posted earned the bad karma (I don't care who gave it), maybe learn a bit in the process.  That's the only drawback to this, I have no idea what post someone thought sucked so bad they dinged me for it....

In a perfect world... I love the idea. I like the fact that your points are limited and earned after 100 posts.

What I dont like about the feature is most will only say what people want to hear. Not many will stand up and say what they truly believe if it goes against the general consensus at that point in time.

I like the fact that I can bring up an argument I see perfectly logical and have it smashed by someone, thus changing my point of view. I think myself and others will get penalized or discouraged for this.

So its a post it note over the karma score for me ;)

There is nothing you can say to me that I will give you a discouragement point for. Please be kind my brothers and sisters ;D

Wow, took like a 10day break from SR due to financials. Come back and see this! Great idea mods.

Apologies if this has already been discussed, but we cannot see which post gave us +/- karma on our profile?

Not who gave karma, just the actual post I made....would be interested to see this.

I agree with this! We don't need to see who gave us +/- karma, but it'd be nice to see which post people found offensive so we may learn from our mistakes and change the post so as to prevent offending others in the future.  :)
Title: Re: Time for some Karma!
Post by: AverageGatsby on March 05, 2012, 07:14 am
After some thought, now I'm seeing why Mods aren't allowing to see what posts generated good/bad karma

You do what you do and that is either a contribution or a detriment to SR....

knowing when people giving you thumbs up or thumbs down would potentially alter what you bring to the community (ie you make a lot of dick-sucking posts to get a lot of +1 karma, when you dont truly mean it).

So the current karma system gives you a pat on the back/kick in the crotch for acting how you normally act, but you cant karma-chameleon to get +1's you dont truly earn (or change -1 posts to seem like less a douchetill)

Anyways, Mods - you guys are geniuses. +1,000karma points to Nomad, DigitalAlch,ChroniPain, DreadPirate, etc

Hello peoples

Just wanted to add my own thoughts about Karma. I think it's a good idea in terms of concept.

But I just noticed that my name has -1 karma and I am left thinking wtf? wtf did I do to deserve -1 karma :/

I have always thought that my lsd trip reports and discussion's based around lsd have always been positive.
I don't know I guess I could just be taking this karma thing to personally. But to be honest I am not feeling the karma love :/

Any input would be appreciated :)

Kind regards

just put a post it note over your score. Ime.. the thumbs up and thumbs down button gets abused more than it doesnt.
Dont worry about it. Just give out love when you think it is earned and carry on regardless.
Dont ever hold back those feelings because of some stupid score.

speedcrunch, I know if I had -1 and felt I hadnt done anything to warrant it I would be at the least confused. probably a bit hurt too

if you want my honest opinion, people around here seem to react rather harshly to the whole SWIM concept. youre hidden behind an anonymous ip, but it is clear that there is someone posting and that person is you...

if I had to guess (but really who knows) someone may have discouraged you in reference to your signature. imo this is not the appropriate use of the karma system though if it is the case. it should be used to indicate when someones behavior is inappropriate or sketchy, not because someone has some silly personal vendetta against something trivial

- its a pity its already being abused, lashing out or simply cos "you don't like someone", unfortunately the spec of data on a users profile isn't
related to what we call karma in real life.

- what is disappointing (in general) is praise is either exaggerated to stay in with the crowd rather than being individual being honest about why
any sort of feedback is being left...

- its always difficult to keep your faith in humanity when the way in life seems to be to screw whoever you can to rise to the top.

thanks for the new features.

Yeah I guess I got a bit stressed about the -1 karma thing I was in the middle of a 450ug lsd trip and looked at my name and saw I had -1 karma and I was just like wtf :/

But I do tend to take things too personally sometimes. My view is that the Karma rating could be a good thing but I also think people sound take post count and post quality into account before giving out – or + karma and not give out karma based on silly sh*t .

Just wanted to weigh in on this publicly - as those of you who are familiar with the system will vouch, the karma system is unreliable right now. It's only been a few days! People will give you a -1 karma for the Lulz, strictly. In fact, saying "OMG I HAVE -1 KARMA" on the forums is almost certain to garner you at least one more -1 (bet I get one from this post too;))

Point is that you have to think long-term : eventually the karma points will stretch into tens/hundreds/more. At that point they will be extremely useful.

To those of you (like me) who have gotten a few minus or a few plus - recognize that all that means is one or two people (out of about 13,500 registered users) clicked the "wahhhh" button under your name (or the "yayyy" button, as the case may be).

In other words, don't worry about it! The karma system *is* all but worthless right now. A person with -0/+2 karma is the same as a person with no rating whatsoever.

However, when you see someone with -2,928/+12, you know that you probably shouldn't trust that person that you should inject a quad of cocaine into your johnson. And *that* is the idea. Savvy?

@SpeedCrunch:

I can’t believe I’m posting this, but since you are so upset about it, I thought I should come clean and tell you IT WAS ME who gave you the -1 karma. I did this because I was really irritated by a post of yours in which you more or less claimed that bad acid trips do not exist. I argued against this in the original thread, and also gave bad karma to another poster in the same thread who made the same claim. Your post is here: http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=13376.msg130779#msg130779

As far as I know, at the time of posting this comment, you were still quite new to LSD, and had publicly stated in other forum posts that you had only tripped about 3-4 times on low to medium doses. I felt that you were spreading an opinion that was uninformed and unhelpful.

As someone who has suffered from several bad trips on acid, one of them being quite recent and psychologically distressing, I really resented reading your post. Bad trips are very real and very serious, and not something to be taken lightly or dismissed altogether.

Other than this, I find your trip reports and general posts to be quite interesting, and I have responded to them with thanks. I appreciate your overall contribution to the forums, and I’m sure I will give you positive karma in the future, but the bad trip comment seriously pissed me off.

In my opinion, this was not abuse of the karma system. Is the karma system not more or less the same as a “Like” or “Dislike” button? I strongly disliked your post and felt entitled to leave you negative karma on that basis.

I feel kind of bad now, knowing that you discovered the -1 karma while you were tripping on acid yourself. Given my reasons, it is strangely ironic that you found out whilst tripping. I sincerely hope that it didn’t cause you to have a bad trip, as I would not wish that upon anyone.

I’m shocked that it made you feel so stressed that you had to dose yourself with Diazepam, geez. I’m genuinely sorry for hurting your feelings, but I must say that I honestly don’t think you should care so much what other people think, especially when it’s people on an anonymous drug forum. No one here is a huge or significant part of your life and their opinions shouldn’t matter so much.

Feel free to leave me -1 karma in retaliation for causing you that amount of stress. I’m sure others will do the same, but I don’t particularly care. As far as I’m concerned, this forum is for exchanging intel regarding security issues, vendors, drug information, and harm minimisation – it’s not supposed to be a circle jerk where everybody just plays nice with each other.

BRB, that certainly was not something trivial, and I dont really think you should need to apologize. I honestly disagree with SC about how there arent really bad trips. In my opinion this is incorrect and from a lack of experience... I can see if you had horrible experiences in the past you would be pretty adamant regarding the fact and if she dismissed your personal experiences I understand how one would likely consider discouraging the user for making such erroneous claims.

There are definitely such things as bad trips SC, some people are able to work through them and they end up being positive, but psychedelics possess the potential for emotionally unsettling experiences that can have serious long term implications on ones psyche. For someone to dismiss such experiences could potentially lead others to lose their respect for the chemicals and promote irresponsible use which should be discouraged.

Nice of you to respond and let SC know why since she was curious. I am glad I was wrong about the SWIM thing and it was something reasonable. Kinda ironic regarding how the karma caused so much stress and what some may consider a bad trip really since SC needed to take diazepam. It is unfortunate SC was in a sensitive position due to tripping, and therefore got a little upset, but her karma has certainly improved so this probably isnt much of an issue now. I hope no one gives you negative karma for just using the system as it was intended imo

Hello I would just like to state that there is no need to apologize as in the end I deserved the -1 karma. After some more research I have found that bad trips can happen.

Now time for some community transparency I want to show you all a PM that I sent to blockrockinbeats I also want to state that I sincerely harbour no ill will or resentment against blockrockinbeats and I believe he/she was fair in there -1 karma rating.

No worries mate :)

I just read your comments on the Time for some Karma! thread and I can agree from reading other user experiences that bad lsd trips can happen.

I guess the no such thing as a bad lsd trip was more of an inexperienced statement on my part since I am relatively new to lsd.

P.S No need to be sorry mate you did what you thought was right and by reading the forums a bit and doing some more research I have found that bad trips can happen.

I have yet to have a bad lsd trip but you never know that might change someday and yeah I was tripping when I saw the -1 karma thing and got a little stressed but it didn't cause a bad trip just some anxiety wondering where -1 karma came from.

But to be honest I think that in the end I deserved the -1 karma with that said I have edited some of my older posts to state that bad lsd trips can in fact happen.

Kind Regards
SpeedCrunch

P.S I wont be giving you -1 karma you did the right thing :)

Sorry if this has been answered already, but how do you deal out karma? I think I still have noob status, is that the reason why I can't deal it out?
You need 100+ posts before you can start giving out 1 karma every 3 days.

Thanks! Expect karma in the future! :-P

@SpeedCrunch:

I can’t believe I’m posting this, but since you are so upset about it, I thought I should come clean and tell you IT WAS ME who gave you the -1 karma. I did this because I was really irritated by a post of yours in which you more or less claimed that bad acid trips do not exist

And THIS ^^ Ladies and Gentlemen . . . Is the reason the karma system is a great idea in these forums. We are not so childish as to just hit someone with negative karma because we can or we Dunn'a'Like'a'them so'much, eh? :)

In a lesser forum with uncool people this sort of thing would've turned into a huge spectacle of everyone -1 karma-ing other people for -1 karma-ing other people. . . . And THAT is useless. But ... I don't know - we are all in agreement here that "bad trips don't exist" = -1 karma, even the one who said it.

Good show, guys. This makes me a very happy shredmod :)

instead of all this talk of members posts being "judged of the basis of it's merits" and all, someone should just set up a vendor account for the buying and selling of karma. If u are a veteran member with a few hundred old forum posts laying around you arent using, then sell them! sure they'd get top coin! im not even gonna dislose how much i had to pay for my first karma point!! ;)

sure there's tons of newbies lined up 'out the door' who want your karma! perhaps even a quality scammer or two?

sure folks would pay for the 'good' stuff too..like "mod" karma, ect...

just a thought for any entrepreneurs out there...?

I don't think the Karma system is meant to be used in that way mate....... and I am sure buying and selling of karma would be in violation of SR policy.............lmao

Awesome.  I wonder if I should rebump all of my "helping out the noobs" threads from 6+ months ago... ;)

- i find most noobs post 'thanks' for help but "you" / anyone could race around helping as many people as possible as if it were a full time job and only get 1 or 2 to show for the hard work, so i know exactly how you feel believe it or not...

- i noticed some users posting a bitcoin address if someone found their help welcome suppose wait for a donation -i don't imagine it making more than a beggar sitting on a street corner -its a shame; even seen something to the effect "...help for bitcoins...otherwise too busy.." type
of attitude, again i can why its come to that..?!

- moderators are rewarded for their effort in some way or another, so yes "we" do appreciate their work...obviously
you thank someone for help, otherwise sending over some bitcoins would probably help..?!

[thank] [discourage]

- send a mod coin or  or 3 etc..if you like if thats who helped you etc....

I gotta say I am impressed with the lack of abuse on this forum. Karma is streaming to those who deserve it and the thumbs down button is rarely used.

lol. Always reminds me of this scene from Fear and Loathing
"Know your dope fiend. You will not be able to see his eyes because of tea shades, but his knuckles will be white from inner tension and his pants will be crusted with semen from constantly jacking off when he can't find a rape victim. "

Sadly, US LE treat us "dope fiends" this way still. Nothing has changed in 50 years :-))

- my prediction is many have still to learn what karma really is and how to apply it, getting the distinct feeling its just used as weapon
  to hack away at people
      - as feedback is / has been.
      - because positive & negative isn't being applied evenly.

- if someone expects positive karma you have to give it too.

-  i am not sorry for caring.

Peace.

karma is fantastic.Positive should be giving for helpful info, honest feedback, unveiling scammers, and otherwise helping the community in a positive way. i see negative karma being passed around like candy at halloween. its crazy! just cause some dude disagrees with you doesnt mean they deserve that bad karma. even the troll(s) get bad karma! ever heard of not feeding the troll(s)? that negative karma you gave them...they ate it...

obviously positive karma is harder to come by than negative even without feeding the troll(s)

Have you seen anti-drug-legalization thread? ;-)

Anyways, thanks to all the lovely people who gave a + Karma!  :-*

great! because the more i hang out here, the more assholes i encounter.
for example, i make offers to donate my development time, and i get smart ass remarks when i'm simply asking for software ideas. that's just the most recent example...

How should i put this w/o sounding negative?
- rushlimbo -SR might not want a total stranger to develop pgp & chatting tools for them as they have the skills between them.
pidgin is open source and could be modified already, pidgin isn't the only msg'ing one there are others.
there more you get involved with the more needs upkeep.

- i wouldn't say and judge for everyone by saying don't make good suggestions that wouldn't be right, experience tells me some ideas have already been
thought of and the powers that be have already dismissed or declared not feasible.
the technical/feature requests section is a better place for 'Suggestions', i don't have anything to do with veto'ing good from the bad ideas.

- we will see in 6mths time hopefully karma has better use.

Peace

{unless "you've openly offended someone for no apparent reason...}

- don't let the karma thing bother you it doesn't mean anything, someone with +20 & -10  versus +7 & -1 versus +5 & -5....they're all individuals and got their ratings
for different reasons and picked on cos they have opinion or _ _ _ _ _

- nobody in their right mind is going to implement a feature if they can't see the admin "messaging" assoc with it.

- its unlikely users are going to be able to cross-reference who marked someone down etc, ends up being a mud slinging match.

I stick to fairness,
do what you believe in,
give credit where its due
and discourage....you know what
...if you discourage individual participation then its no better than our governments who treat you like a slave just want you to take orders...
don't follow like sheep...think for yourself..

Peace

All Karma systems are only somewhat effective.  It is far too easily manipulated for those who want to seek some kind of revenge or competitive advantage.  I wish it well.
This is kinda off topic. but seeing your here and all. I'm totally kicking myself about ordering from  PTP and not you:( it was a toss up and have never tried the bars and he was still a trusted seller with a sale? His last deal appears to be a hit and run scam! bummer

I'd like to post my agreement with the many suggestions that we be able to see the specific posts that we have received karma for.

I think everyone should be able to see the karma posts in a person's profile). Having the karma posts displayed would significantly decrease the amount of unwarranted petty karma. Even if you couldn't necessarily see who doled out the karma, people would be more conscientious about it to who and for what they are giving it for.

As TravellingWithoutMoving pretty much said, I don't think people really take into consideration the purpose of the karma system when they are handing it out. Especially when it comes to negative karma. Often times people use it as an anonymous means to "get back" at someone. Getting even with someone and discouraging behavior are two separate ideas with two separate motives. There's really not much you can do to get rid of your negative karma unless the person who gave it decides to take it away. And after some time, that's simply just not likely to happen.

Lastly, karma is the one definitive "weapon" trolls have to use against other members, and they obviously don't hesitate to use it. So I think adding a feature or two that could deter people from abusing the system is good for the community.

That's my 0.02 BTC. I'll also post this is the Feature Request thread.
