Title: Best Way to Handle USPS' "postage due" Notice - Not Sure How to Proceed???
Post by: squarertof23 on February 28, 2012, 02:24 am
Hi, I hope someone can give me good advice, I'm not sure how to handle this situation, or if I'm just being overly cautious.

I have a private mailbox.  I used the name of a non-existent company for this private mailbox.

I placed an order from an vendor on the Silk Road.  It is the only order I currently have in progress using this private mailbox.  The vendor said a few days ago that he shipped the order (USA address to USA address), using the USPS.

Today I received in my private mailbox a USPS form 3849, telling me that they could not deliver the package because there was 60 cents postage due.  According to the form, I need to go to the USPS' post office (address given on the form) to pick up the package in person - and, I assume, pay the 60 cents.  It also says that I must bring this form with me, and some identification.

Here are my questions:

1)  In general, what do you think of this situation, and what should I do?

2)  *IF* I go to get this package, I fear that if I provide identification of me - such as a drivers' license - it won't "work" because the delivery address on the package uses the name of the fake company that the private mailbox is assigned to.  (Of course, when I got the private mailbox, I had to provide my name then.)  What problems, if any, will this cause?

3)  I thought about doing nothing, and just forgetting about this package.  Thoughts?

4)  *IF* I do nothing, I assume the USPS will attempt to return it to the sender.  If the vendor knows what he's doing, he used a fake address for the return address.  What will the USPS do then when they can't redeliver it?  Will they open it, and then ask me, "WTF"?

I plan to ask the vendor about this, but have not yet, I thought I'd first post this and get some advice and education before speaking to him.

Thanks in advance.

I looked it up, seems the 3849 is the standard "sorry, we missed you note". However, what strikes me as odd is the fact that it got shipped AND delivered to you, yet it was short on postage?  I'd think that they wouldn't even let the package get shipped if it was missing postage.

EDIT: I found this

Seems that that's common procedure if you're short on postage, delivering it and asking for the difference.  If it was a petty amount, I honestly think you should be okay but if it's bulk then the cops might be trying something sneaky.

At our work we get packages back that need more postage with a little sticker, or stamp stating such. It is not normal for the PO to be asking the sendee for additional postage. That being said, reading the link posted, and it being a small amount, I'd go in and pay it, but be prepared as always, to deny everything.

Thanks - But, to clarify:

They did *NOT* deliver the package.

Via their form, they're asking me to come in and show identification and pick up the package at the local post office.

That is what led met to ask the questions in my original posting.

Excuse the ambiguity, I was referring to your local PO receiving the package as it getting delivered.

i would just go pick it up and let the vendor know he kinda sucks. or you could just ask vendor what he thinks about it. maybe he would just resend. if you dont pick up that package i think you have to write off that address though.

Just pay for it. They aren't going to do a Controlled Delivery without a postal inspector like that. You probably got a shitty vendor who decided that putting 2 stamps on a padded envelope was okay.

Pick it up and give your vendor a 3/5

This is a post from a few weeks (days even) back where someone else had the same scenario (including same amount due)

In the end i think he went and picked it up just fine.

I have only read the original post in this thread; Just an FYI.

I would not worry about going to pick up the package at all.  Since you used a fake business name as the recipient I would think you  could use any ID as long as it has your picture on it.  The USPS does not know who owns what business and frankly I don't think they would go out of their way to determine the real owner of the business even if there is an owner to the business.

This shit happens all of the time, especially with the rising postage now days.  Everyone makes a mistake here and there.  I would send a message to the vendor BUT make sure you are not flaming him!  Be kind and courteous and let him know the situation.  Ask him if he would be willing to give you a discount on your next order or something else he may be able to do in order to please the customer.

BOTTOM LINE:
I can not see LE staking out at the post office 24/7 waiting for you to arrive and pick up a package, it would just cost way too much damn money to keep a group of LEO staking out the post office not knowing when you may show.  If they really wanted you they would have done a controlled delivery even if you owed an extra 60c.  It would be much easier with a controlled delivery versus staking out the post office.

MAN UP AND GO TO THE POST OFFICE AND CLAIM YOUR SHIT!!!!!!!!!~!

Good luck bro and I wish you the best

Peace

Look, that's just not true. People have been busted in post office parking lots before. It really depends on the quantity.

I'd be to paranoid to pick it up but that is just me.

You need to let the vendor know what is up! If it was me, I'd feel awful and just reship it.

Was just at post office today to mail legit letters and to buy stamps.  I guess I had some old stamps and she said I needed to buy one centers to make the difference.  I asked well I have been sending letters out with these stamps and they go threw, wtf.  She said the person on the other end pays for the extra shipping.  I would assume this is the case.
