just caught this trying to get on SR today. anybody else read this?
gawker.com/silk-road/
-
Everybody on SR should read this. Guns bring heat.....SR doesn't need anymore heat. NUFF SAID.
-
Damn it gawker.. you fucked apple now your fucking us
-
I THINK THIS IS THE REASON THE SITE IS DOWN1!!!!!! :-(
EITHER TOO MUCH TRAFFIC, TAKEDOWN, OR SR DECIDED TO SHUT DOWN TO HARDEN AND REMOVE GUNS SECTION!
-
effin gawker
-
Just out of curiosity did SR take the site offline to blunt the influx of people/reporters that are about to show up.
-
EITHER TOO MUCH TRAFFIC
seems plausible
"openly trading illegal drugs using the nearly-untraceable hacker currency Bitcoins."
completely public and traceable p2p currency, also known as NEARLY UNTRACEABLE HACKER CURRENCY
it seems like the gawker network's really gone downhill, i mean they were never super great to begin with but like, come on
-
I'm not a big fan of media attention like this.
-
fucking journalists and their shitty hyperbolic articles. "hacker-currency" .... what a fucking asshole.
-
Damn that Adrian Chen guy! I wouldn't be surprised if SR took the site down for a day or two because of this....seems like a good idea anyway.
-
Are people really surprised? This was inevitable.
Unless SR change their stance on gun sales, this will be the final straw for this place. The influx of people last year following the publicity was a good PR coup, and well played. This time, it will be a disaster. Even if it does survive, I don't want to be around the kind of people that this publicity will attract.
-
Glad I squeezed an order in this week (got it today). Now I just have to make it last, just in case!
-
silk road admins are young, naive and just plain stupid. Allowing guns on this site takes it to a new level. Lot of people have no problems with drugs. However, a lot of those same people have BIG problems with guns.
If you are not encrypting your messages when you buy/sell, you had better start.
-
yea, drugs are one thing (an awesome thing) - but guns...? I mean common. With drugs, it's all about the escape, the happiness, subconscious exploration, and feeding the black market. With guns, yea it can be about protection - but if you're buying illegally, chances are it's not just for fucking protection. If that were the case, why not just buy one from a gun store - or better yet, a gun show? All of this damn gun talk is going to do is bring the wrong type of people here (LE, violent criminals, etc.). And for what cost? So some dudes can get a damn Uzi sent to their door?? By allowing this type of traffic will only fuck over the peaceful members in the end.
-
Weapons and Ammunition will just bring more heat for SR.
Not only that, but there will be more inter-agency cooperation if there is a drugs+guns connection.
Fuck Gawker for the article, but it was inevitable.
I appreciate freedoms, as do all of you... But if the #1 rule is not to HARM anyone, then weapons most definetely should NOT be permitted. It defeats the purpose... They are used only for one thing, to HARM.
my 2c
-
They are used only for one thing, to HARM.
they're also used to protect, hunt, and some people just enjoy the hobby
this doesn't invalidate your argument by any means though, because at least in america those people would be buying legally, and in places/situations where the buyer has to buy illegally despite having the best intentions, it's unfortunately kind of nearly impossible to really verify that in an anonymous marketplace
-
It is likely that this article is connected with the downtime... which also makes it a pretty fucked up time to be hiring. The paranoia level is too high right now to be inviting new people to the SR staff.
-
I really think SR needs to implement the buying an account fee ASAP. That will seed out the journalists having access to viewing the site and the forums as well.
-
If its really about guns it would suck real bad. I was trying to get one today but SR is down. I cant buy no guns where I'm from. I was ready to order it but.....sucks
-
I really think SR needs to implement the buying an account fee ASAP. That will seed out the journalists having access to viewing the site and the forums as well.
I think either this or just going private/creating a second, invite-only SR would be the best thing to do. SR already has enough of a reputation that if it were private it would still have a huge number of new members.
-
I have a strong feeling something is in the works to better serve the good users and vendors from all this bull.
-
Having a weapon is the best argument during a confrontation for neither party to harm each other at all. It is necessary for humanity to wield force in a manner that contradicts violence itself. Never say an object has one use or purpose— it is a human who chooses his purpose and lives righteously or not.
-
Guns are stupid on SR !!
Now it just need to have call-girls or escorting, whores, call it like you want, and we have the perfect platform for mafia implementation.
This is like explosives! totally stupid! We now just need the human bombs payable with btc, that could be foundable in afghanistan or irak ...
Please SR stay in the drugs only, no guns, no violence, no cp sure and no human traffic, drugs is a plenty enough attractive and lucrative market i think.
-
TAKE THE DAMN GUNS AWAY! :-[
-
Now it just need to have call-girls or escorting, whores, call it like you want, and we have the perfect platform for mafia implementation.
We already had this happen last year...
-
Can we just leave the guns to that other black market site please? I really hope these site admins don't begin to get too greedy and cocky playing this game. Remember your roots and stick to them.... Please! For all of us!
-
Damn that Adrian Chen guy! I wouldn't be surprised if SR took the site down for a day or two because of this....seems like a good idea anyway.
For sure...this guy is just another tabloid yellow journalist looking for his big break and has his sights set on SR as his golden ticket to make it big...I mean look at what he was writing about before his June exposé...he was writing about 'dongs' and not just any dong, but the dong of American Apparel CEO and founder (not shitting you the article is titled 'The Legend of Dov's Dong')...Talk about a hard hitting journalist writing about some topics vital to society.
That being said, I understand SR's political stance towards black/grey markets, but guns are just a bad idea to have around here IMHO and bring much more heat then they are worth as a political statement. I have absolutely no problems with guns and have several in my house right now as I am a firm believer in my right to protect myself and my loved ones, as well as the Bill of Rights, but honestly no good can come from a gun with a scratched off serial number being sold on SR.
SR, although I may be critical of your actions and policies from time to time, it is only because I want to see the road succeed and prosper much longer then the short term. You have my continued support, but please take into account the warnings and concerns of your users who will no doubt stick with you through thick and thin.
-
but if you don't own a gun how are you going to protect yourself from the fascists who already want you in jail for petty drug crimes?
-
definitely not by miming their violence.
-
I am a firm believer in my right to project myself and my loved ones
Sounds like a pretty big gun if it can "proJect" you and your loved ones.
How far can it shoot you?
Were did you get such a cannon?
:P
-
tank you for the levity in times of distress!
edit: unintended pun there do to typo there too, hehe
-
but if you don't own a gun how are you going to protect yourself from the fascists who already want you in jail for petty drug crimes?
Unfortunately those 'fascists' (I hate throwing words like that around...you nazi) have an arsenal far superior then your lowly 9mm, so unless you plan on offing yourself with it you are still going to jail for that petty drug crime(plus a few extra years for the illegal handgun).
-
I deleted his thread the second i saw it. I think he even mentioned that in his article. Yes, if guns are going to bring more heat, then I say get rid of them. Id rather have my doc than guns... Im thinking that SR is down because they are going to pull the guns and make some changes, if it were because of traffic, some of us would eventually get in, i havent heard one person making it in...
When vendors or buyers speak to the media, all it does is give them more words to put in the article. This just pisses me off..
-
Hate to say it but we told ya guys... Knew this was gunna bring unwanted attention.

Very definitive statement, are you a prophet... Its been less than 24hrs, how about when it went down for 3 days and had nothing to do with anything? --

Think positively, on a quantum level your negativity may unintentionally break the camels back
-
No don't ban guns DBush was at least a respected seller now we're going to be left with only scammers with no reputation on Blackmarket reloaded due to this dirty rat that leaked this
-
it wasn't leaked. all LEO know about it, just like they've known abouot this for a looooooooooong time. But public outcry demands action.
-
Guns don't kill people. COPS KILL PEOPLE.
-
Guns don't kill people. COPS KILL PEOPLE.
I agree, and we need guns to protect us from that! Those people who want to ban guns are keeping us disarmed against tyranny!
-
Cause the media is full of dirty tricks...

Silk Road's anonymous administrator wouldn't comment for the article, asking if I could wait for four months until they were prepared for another influx of attention; he said he's currently "hardening" the site and adding more "exciting" features. "Last time you wrote an article about Silk Road, we got a lot of attention, new members, and even some heat from the feds," he wrote. "That was good for us, but we weren't completely ready for it."
i would love to hear how that exchange went. was this guy buttering SR up and made him think he was on SR's side? did he say it was otr? SR seems like a very intelligent and confident person. saying something like that seems to me like it was goading some sort of LE to make a move.
-
The masters of SR knew the implications of allowing gun sales. This isn't a surprise to them. Therefore there is no, "we told you so." It's not that they allowed gun sales out of greed, but out of principle. They are after all, revolutionaries. I think many forget that and just see SR as a convenient place to buy and sell drugs. But the truth is, you're part of a movement that's bigger than a mere Amazon.com of drug sales.
Relax for a bit. I know that's a hard thing especially if you're addicted to your DOC (drug(s) of choice). But have a little faith in those who are running this great experiment.
-

I havent even read all the posts yet but this point should give SR enough reason to take the guns out also drugs are made for positive results guns are made to destroy. If you feel that strong about guns SR put them on a different site. Dont let them destroy something so positive.

Mine too ;D Mine has a 5"d Chamber 16"long reduced down to a 2.5"d barrel which is about 3' in length. I also rigged up dual igniters for a little extra pop.
I also found that the small broiler onions go farther and faster than potatoes. I knocked a hole through half inch plywood from 100' out.
I love my onion gun :D

gawker.com/silk-road/
Hello bob.
Where did you get that link from?
-
This is obviously a PR stunt. I personally have no problem with SR trying to grow.
-
if sr is going to remove guns because you guys want he may as well remove drugs because people dont like them, this can become another fucking amazon and remove all illegal goods.
dont try to pretend drugs are accepted by the world more then guns. i guarantee the drug article gawker wrote got far more attention around the web then the gun article. guns have been on this site longer then most the poeple in this thread.
sr clearly has a vision for this site and i certainly agree with it. at first i was against guns but they make up such a small part of this site anyway. honestly we went through all this when sr created the weapons category. most of you are late to the party.
i respect that some of you guys hate guns, but you should respect some people love guns. and not killing people with guns but just collecting and shooting them. do people who love to collect guns not have a right to purchase them in your eyes? THIS IS A FREE MARKET! if you dont like the guns here then dont buy them. if no one buys them then the sellers will leave. thats how a free market works, whining to sr about the guns is bullshit. if theres a market for them here then fine and if not thats fine too.
instead of making threads attemting to get sr to remove guns you should be making a boycott gun sellers thread. that is the way it should be done.
remember sr is "captain of the ship", you guys pay to ride not pay to rule. the only thing i cared about sr not selling strongly was CP and so long as there is no cp i will back up the decision to allow sales of any kind on here.
lets be real here, the gun section is not what made gawker write that article because guns have been on sale here for along time, its you guys suddenly making threads about it again that brought the attention of the media. so really its your guys fault this happened. with in a week of everyone suddenly freaking out about guns AGAIN the article got wrote. you guys brought this on yourself. the guns didnt bring gawker back to sr the whining on the forums did.
-
If there were NO GUNS on SR.....then Journalists wouldn't be able to write an article about buying guns and Drugs on SR.
You wouldn't read the sentence "Now you can buy a Glock with your LSD." Just that sentence alone gives some pretty scary imagery to alot of people. People already fear LSD due to ignorance.....but when you add GUNS to LSD that can lead to hysteria IMO. Not everything is allowed on SR....No CP and Guns should be added to that list. There are way too many other sources to obtain them. It's not worth the extra attention. I didn't care too much before....I guess I was apathetic but if the timing of this rather long SR outage has ANYTHING to do with the Guns on SR Gawker article then everybody on SR needs to take notice is all I'm saying. SR is the captain and we are all on this ship of fools together. Sometimes even a Captain can lead the ship into danger......does Italy come to mind anybody? I want to stay on this ship.....not have it SUNK by the extra attention. DEA is already here.....do we really need ATF too?

Hey bob, maybe you missed it earlier when I asked.
Where did you get this link from?
gawker.com/silk-road/
Hmmm?
-
Variety Jones- you sound suspicious? I ran across this link too a few days ago when I put 'Silk Road tor' into google, came up in the top 10 hits. Gawker's a pretty mainstream site.
I've bought 100BTC, on the off-chance that this, along with a few associated articles which have run in the past few days, and the BBC R5 program on 5th Feb might precipitate a little bubble as happened last June when the first few mainstream articles ran.
-
yeah, sorry about that Variety. didn't see your earlier question. like wowzers, i came across it when i did a yahoo search for sr. it was actually the first search result for me. should have just said to go to the gawker main page because it was at that point one of the main stories. i forgot about direct links around here. :)
-
Yeah, I was feeling a little suspicious.
The first mention I could find anywhere on the internet that used the specific semi-fully qualified URL gawker.com/silkroad/ was bobs post. Found some after that, none before it.
Oh, lots of other links, but they were all to http://gawker.com/5879924/now-you-can-buy-guns-on-the-online-underground-marketplace
So I was wondering how bob came upon that shortened direct sym-link to the article, is all.
Still wondering.

Maybe I am an optimist but the gun vendors of SR should see this new exposure as a business opportunity. I say more exposure=more sales. Even if some of the customers are LEO, its for the vendor to sell his goods without being traced.
