Title: Interest study: Surveillance/Countersurveillance
Post by: yaosh on January 25, 2012, 09:17 pm
Before I go listing services people do not want or cannot afford, I would like to gauge interest here at SR.  I build custom devices which are inappropriate for normal markets.  Examples include long range, high output IR lasers for temporarily blinding security cameras; GPS and cellular jamming devices; covert listening devices and remote pinhole cameras; tracking devices for people, cars, cargo, etc.; and other special purpose devices made to customer specifications.  In general, my products range from $800-$4,000.  Some items may be well outside of these prices, either lower or higher.  These aren't your "spy store" barely functional Chinese toys, but serious devices and they carry a higher price tag as fabricating them in my lab and field testing them is time consuming and expensive.  If there are interested buyers, please reply with your level of interest, and the type of devices you might purchase.  Keep in mind that most of what I provide is illegal to operate or possess in many jurisdictions.  Assess your need for the product and weigh it against your risk.  Thank you.

I think if you told us a little more about what specific devices you offer you might get more interest.

Hello sir, i could very well be interested but depends on what you have? Perhaps you might make a brochure up or stock list with specs & prices etc. Thanks and very good luck in your venture, Sunny  ;)   oh yeah pics might be good idea too

I may be very interested also, I would like more information on exactly what you are going to offer and prices. I was wondering if something like this would show up here soon.

As for specifics, you would need to tell me what type of countermeasures you need to deploy, or the type of surveillance environment.  Pictures would aid nobody but LEOs.  Every item is fabricated and camouflaged to client needs.  A GPS jammer might be hidden within a normal cell phone cigarette lighter adapter, while still charging the phone, allowing vehicle GPS tracking to report a false location for people like truck drivers.  A cell phone jammer with a shorter range could be disguised in a pack of cigarettes which you could casually set on the table with a lighter, jamming the other party's ability to make calls, send data or transmit audio, or even call 911.  Likewise a GPS/GPRS/CDMA... multiband jammer, while being larger and requiring a briefcase or similar packaging could render all communications besides radio useless in a small area like a conference room or warehouse.

Unless you want boring pictures of PCBs and antennas, I'm afraid I cannot supply much.  You've all seen sunglasses with cameras, smoke detector cameras, and other similar novelty items.  Think along those lines.

By "other devices" I mean just about anything you need engineered.  You say "Hey, I need a way to find out where my partner is going, I think he's working with the feds.  I want to track his car and be able to hear what's going on inside it" and I will draw up a design, quote you, and discuss details.  I engineer most of these items myself and prototype them here, on the premises.  There is no "catalog", sorry.  For example, the optical sensors for one application may vary greatly from those used in another, say a pinhole camera versus a 360 degree pan/tilt mounted for a UAV.  Because of these facts, pictures of parts would serve little purpose.

Likewise, pricing is variable depending on project.  Machining aluminum is expensive, where as cutting foam to mount components in a Pelican case is not.

What I can offer is a solution to most problems, and how much it costs depends.  If it is such a serious problem, then high prices should not matter.  This is for serious buyers with an actual need for security and privacy, not people who want to show off gadgets to their friends and play '007'.

Also, more aligned to the consumer end of the spectrum, I can design and build custom laptops.  All hardware matched to client specifications.  Various EM armoring options, environmental ruggedization, network adapters which change their MAC address randomly, full disk encryption.  Secure live Linux distributions or Windows run from internally installed tamper proof FIPS compliant self-erasing hardware encrypted drives.  Screens which are not visible to anyone but the wearer of a pair of special glasses are available as well.  Simply identify the threat, and I will mitigate it.

Motion sensors, IR cameras, underground seismic sensors like those used by US DHS and DoD, and other devices to alert you in the event of someone or a group of people are approaching your premises are also available.

The only thing I won't ship are lethal or injurious countermeasures.

This all sounds good, but at the end of the day you've got no proof of the goods or feedback from previous transactions/customers...I could register a new user acct and say I can make x,y,z camouflaged to look like a,b,c and that'd be the same thing your doing...know what I mean?

Google the KipKay method.  Really your cheapest bet for simple stuff.  Removed an annoying mole on my arm with one of those :)  A friend who is a dermatologist was quite appalled, but it's been gone since with no tumor cells...  Don't try this at home however.

+1

I'm absolutely certain there's a market on the Silk Road for you.

There's all kinds of technically legal electronic devices that are next to impossible to get anonymously in RL.

PM me with details.  I'll need to know what you will and will not need to do with it, and what capabilities you need.  Dedicated secure laptops can be inexpensive, depending on your needs.  I will need to know the country you will be using it in most as well.  Try to clearly identify what you want to protect against, whether that is law enforcement, corporate espionage, etc.  Please include your budget constraints.

Well you talk the talk (was impressed with some of your answers too) and i think there should be a good market for your services/devices. I will certainly keep you in mind, welcome to SR. Sunny :)

Thanks Sunny, hopefully I will be closing my first sale here shortly.  I was kind of surprised that nothing like this had shown up on SR or the other site.  I would think that people who provide the type of goods found here would have an interest in protection.  Most of my clients in the real world are executives and find a lot of peace of mind in electronic protection.

I am working with a couple of factories to see if I can swing a deal for a bulk order on one of the most common items.  If I can, hopefully I can offer a special deal to you guys on portable multiband RF jamming equipment.  They seem hesitant to lower their offer, but I know they will. :)

I should be able to get you guys some covert communication equipment for your RL sales teams, such as wireless invisible earpieces usable with bluetooth phones or radios.  Some have clear mono-filament removal tabs, others are even smaller but must be removed with a magnetic extractor.  If anyone has an interest, please post.  I've even got a pair of glasses with a wireless transceiver in them which links the earpiece to another device without needing a neck coil, typically worn under the clothes which transmits to the earpiece.  This offers much more stealth without wardrobe restrictions.  These devices would allow you to keep in touch with team members on the street without anyone knowing, for safety.

I have frequency counters and bug sweepers as well as laser detectors for camera optics, they reveal hidden cameras by refraction from the optics.

Let me know what you need guys, I'll try to make it happen.

Highly highly interested in a bug sweeper, as I know this wouldn't be overly pricy to make. It would be used in situations where certain goods are being exchanged in a small, secure environment, for money:) Stealth is okay, but I am blatantly okay with running a bug scanner across any potential customers of mine right in front of them lol:P The laser detector would be another one I would invest in, and if I had the extra cash around a HF Laser to disable cams would be more then useful in a few situations.

Bug sweepers are useful against normal civilian threats, but I recommend a freq. counter that can pick up VHF/UHF used by LE, if police are a concern.  If they send someone to make a controlled buy, you'll know.  If they're setting up in a nearby staging area you will probably see VHF spikes from radio chatter before anything even happens and might be able to do something about incriminating items.

I hope to establish a seller account soon and start providing solutions, it seems like there is enough interest to warrant the investment.

Thanks for all of the feedback,
-yaosh

Get a FUNcube dongle instead (http://www.funcubedongle.com/):

"Similar to a USB TV Dongle, the FUNcube Dongle simple fits into your computer’s USB port. It’s compatible with many radio reception programs like Rocky, M0KGK, Spectravue and LinRad. The FUNcube Dongle also works with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 both x86 and x64. In addition, it is compatible with Linux and MacOS as it uses standard USB drivers already integrated into the operating system."

"There are two versions. The entry level FUNcube Dongle gives access to the satellite frequency band that FUNcube and some other satellites use. The Pro version gives unlimited access to the frequency range 64 to 1,700MHz. It’s also all-mode: this means that it’s not just limited to narrow band FM reception. As well as data, the FUNcube Dongle will also recieve many other narrow band signals including AM, FM and SSB. It will even receive TV sound channels!"
