Title: Forums Online Status
Post by: abuttelmao on January 24, 2012, 03:01 am
This may seem small and unimportant to some, but when it comes to security, every little bit counts, right?

I've noticed that most people let the forums show when they're online - you can look at the bottom of the main page of the forums and see all the online users, and when you click on someone's forum profile it will show them as online.

This seems a bit unsafe to me - it makes linking a tor client to an SR username that much easier for LE.  Because of this I've disabled the forums showing my online status.  If you're wondering how to do this, go to Profile > Accounts Settings and uncheck the "Show others my online status" box.

I'd done the same some months ago.  Still, aggregate posting time statistics [ dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?action=profile;area=statistics;u=7296 ] are kept for each of us.  That's not the same as specific online status, but still indicates when you're most likely to be online and logged in here.

I mentioned this to SR 2 days ago or so but didn't get a reply on the subject.

Knowing time implies the time zone, which implies a country of residence.

interesting, was not aware of that.  would be nice to have features like this completely removed from the forums software.  in lieu of that, I guess it would be a good idea for everyone to have two different accounts not linked to each other in any way, one for SR and one for the forums.  obviously this creates problems with credibility.
