As the resident Ex-Con and having worked in the Law Library at my local house of incarceration for 6.5 years without pay, I would like to impart some knowledge I picked up while assisting inmates on appeal.
I was interested in interdicted narcotics via the US Postal service and found a theme among cases. In most cases if the USPS catches your package and it is large enough they will put a tracker in it that sends a signal when the box is opened... at which point they come rushing in and it's off to the land of bad food, lousy neighbors and years of sheer boredom.
So how do you get around this? well the law is pretty clear about possession. Even though your name may not be on the box once you open said box you are taking possession of said box. Once possession has been established there is not much left for you to do except call your attorney.
First rule of thumb is 'NEVER' open a package you know to contain something illegal 'where' you received the shipment. You are going to want to remove the package and take it at least a mile away from your home or P.O. Box. Doing it in the Post Office parking lot is dumb.
Secondly while you are driving watch for anyone following you. Make a few stops for gas to make sure. If you get pulled and the box is still sealed you can claim you were returning it to the post office as it doesn't belong to you.
Once you feel safe you are not being followed feel free to remove contents and discard box. If you can avoid putting excess fingerprints on the box that would be helpful. I met a blind 25 year old kid in prison doing five years because they found his fingerprints on a key of coke.
Lastly... never sign for something with someone elses name on it. If you know the sender does not require a sig then you may be signing your life away. I haven't read any cases that incriminates someone by signing but I wouldn't want to be the one that had case law based on them for doing this.
Good luck!!

Added: I was reading the thread from the intern postal employee and there seemed to be a lot of people who are against having the package sent in a fake name... let me just say I WOULD NEVER have a package containing narcotics or any other illegal items with my name on it. The only defense you have is deny-ability and once you have decided to put your own name on the package well that is pretty much out the window. You stand a greater chance of beating the rap if the package is not in your name and they don't catch you opening it. Putting your name on your crime is about the dumbest thing I have ever heard... obviously anyone who endorses using their own name has never spent much time locked up...

Interesting, thanks
On a related note, what advice do you have on making dead drops?
-
sorry i have limited Dead Drop exp. I had a money dead drop for my girls... owned an Escort Agency.
another word of advice on getting caught... you have ZERO to gain by talking to the police, postal inspector, detective... etc. The ONLY person you should talk to is an attorney. I was amazed by how many people immediately start telling on themselves the second they get in trouble.
Remember the burden of proof is on the state or government. If you are scared of jail enough to tell them what you did then honestly you shouldn't be here at all! Jail is a tool they use to get you to talk... if you can't handle a week in your county lockup while you fight the charges, then again... leave this site.
Stand in front of a mirror and practice saying this, until it becomes second nature: "it is not my package, i want to speak to an attorney".
Good Luck!

Yea, I've been meaning to modify my package receiving procedures.

Well said!

Can anybody else back up the advice in the OP? I've also heard about immediately writing "Return to sender" on the package as soon as you get it so that you can claim you were taking it back to the post office. I should be getting my first SR package pretty soon so I'm a little bit nervous.

Sounds to me like everything he has said has made lots of sense.
Personally, I have no idea why you wouldn't put a fake name on the box. I get mail with other people's names every once in a while as it is.

It attracts more attention than mail that is legitimately intended for you and actually has your name on it. Mailman may be like, "he doesn't actually live here..."
But I typically drive somewhere secluded to open my packages so that I can know if I'm being followed, and then immediately lock them up. There's only a very short period where they aren't protected by a warrant requirement when I'm transferring from package to locked area.
