The battle between the nation state cryptographers is well understood, but a battle between nation state cryptographers vs the general population is something new. So cryptography becomes politicized, hence the cipherpunks. I think the ideas of the cipherpunks are still a decade ahead of most people, but that even their most extreme ideas are on the money, especially when it comes to the impact of cryptography on economics.
