However I would describe my knowledge as functional. I can generate and import keys and send and receive messages no problem. The aspects I'm less clear on are fingerprints and signatures. I have a hazy idea of what they are for but I would like to know more about these more advanced features of GPG. I would also like to know how the size-in-bits of a key affects its security. I started out using a 2048 bit key but have recently changed to a 4096 bit key. Is this better or advisable. There also seems to be a second number (1024) associated with my key, I don't seem to be able to alter this in GPG4USB. I'd like to know what these numbers refer to (obviously I know what 4096bits means in terms of the size of a binary number but why is there two numbers) Perhaps we could start an Advanced PGP club thread for people like me, who are au fait with tha basics but would like to learn more. If it is included in this thread it will only baffle and daunt beginners. We agree, with you, but we're trying to jostle our sluggish (but wonderful!) SR Staff into providing us with a full subforum for PGP and general cryptography issues. Then we can collect Botulism's PGP thread and this one and a couple of others and plug them in there. That makes the forum much tidier and also makes it easier to start to talk about more advanced stuff. Also, an intelligence forum would be good too. Maybe we can get both and then it would be like Christmas. kmfkewn and Louis would be over the moon and setup botnets to karma bomb DPR or something.I'll get back to you on PGP signatures in a sec, looking up some additional data on the subject atm. I use an analogy of a bank manager if you go back a few pages to check it out.
