Title: Tor safety question
Post by: letmeenter on July 29, 2011, 12:20 pm
Hi, Is it safe to use Tor and have another non-tor browser open through which your doing normal unsecured browsing?  Read about the risk that you might forget which ones tor but other than that can it be a risK?

There is a risk if you are doing this. You should not be running another browser or using bittorrent or you are certainly at risk.

Can you please explain how this can be exploited in a realistic way as i have problems to see how this should be a risk as long as you dont confuse the browser windows?

I can't explain it very well, because I really don't know the specifics, but basically if your browsing in another browser you are creating cookies that can identify you, regardless of if your using Tor or not. I would really suggest reading the list of warnings that Tor provides, as it very clearly states that you should not use another browser while using tor. Here is the link:

https://www.torproject.org/download/download.html.en#warning

Maybe a more experienced/technically advanced member can offer the specifics of why you should not use another browser while using Tor.

Thanks, this gives me a rough idea where the problem lies. But you should consider that if you are using another browser (for example Opera for non-Tor and Firefox for Tor) than the cookies of both are stored separate.
