You are right this reaction will occur at room temperature, no additional heat is needed. You are also right that reactions happen faster at a higher temperature so heat would make it happen faster but it happens in just a second so it's really not necessary. I have a customer service announcement to make Be careful not to use too much acid. When you convert #3 to #4 by adding acid so the heroin freebase disappears in to the water. If you add the proper amount you're good to go. Since the heroin disappears as you add the acid and stir, when people still see solids in their heroin they othen think "it didnt all dissolve, I'd better add more!". If you added the proper amount and not all solids disappeared that is because what is left is not heroin freebase, it is something else. The reason it disappears as you add a lot more acid is because at some level of acidity whatever it is breaks down. The reason too much acid is bad is because the acidity damages your veins. BTH has an undeserved reputation for harming veins because long ago when it was made it was made in low quality labs (like meth labs). These days BTH is made in super labs in mexico and it's no longer true that it is overly acidic. A customer did some acidity tests of one of my earlier batches and posted his findings, I bet if we search we can find that. I don't recall the numbers but it's not highly acidic as people tend to believe. Injecting something acidic is bad for you. If somebody feels like doing a pH test of various vendors and post the results maybe we can all send a sample to them. I'd be up for that. Any takers? Nod
