Hey fellow SR friends, i dont have or use PGP but think its about time i do, can any of the trusted members help me out?.
Take Bazille's advice, and go through the GPG4USB tutorial.
As much as I hate to have to spell it out, here are some do's and don'ts:
1. DO use the largest key size you can, i.e. 4096-bits.
2. DO NOT use your real name -- as mind-boggling as it seems, I've actually seen people use their real names on their PGP keys, even here. .
3. DO NOT use a real, clearnet email address, e.g. Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, etc.
You don't actually have to use a real email address at all. Again, this should be a no-brainer, but I've actually seen people on here using valid, traceable clearnet email addresses on their PGP keys. Worse yet, some even went as far as to use the very same email address to setup a website, years before they showed-up on Silk Road. A simple query on that website revealed their real name, address and telephone number. I found all this out with less than 10 minutes of effort.
PGP is great software, but it is not magic -- it will not protect you from yourself. If you're not sure about something, ASK first.
