Does this really come as a surprise?  Due to the nature of its content, the Hidden Wiki has frequently come under attack from a variety of sources. Law enforcement may (or may not) be the ones behind this. Don't forget the possibility that the site owner got nervous and decided to pull the plug w/o notice.

It does surprise me a bit. That hidden wiki is linked from reddit if Im not mistaken. The wiki itself didnt host any so called illegal material. And a lot of stuff in Tor is  illegal   anyway (like you know this very site...)

Is there a place in onionland where people are still discussing the freedom hosting bust?

Just the fact that you're doing nothing wrong is little protection if the authorities decide to make an example of you, for whatever reason.

I don't know, but I'd like to find out. I'll poke around and see what I can find -- if I find anything, I'll post it here.

Not sure if it got taken down: hopefully not!  In my experience lots of hidden services go down for a little while and come back, but in this political climate it's always suspicious when a Tor service disappears, even if it's just temporary.

Let's stay alert, although I don't see how you can get in trouble for creating a Wiki that links to other sites but doesn't host any of their content.  Is that a crime?

Well, the hidden wiki is on line right now. So apparently it was not another casualty in the war against free information...

The Hidden Wiki has gone down for days at a time before. Nothing new about that. Although I expect it to be one of the biggest targets in onionland (probably second biggest after SR), so you should only load it under the assumption that it is serving exploits, and protect yourself accordingly.

 Admin Note

THW did not get shut down. The webhost which hosts THW, is in turn hosted by VolumeDrive, which was down for 3 days during a DC migration. See Web Hosting Talk [clearnet link] --Admin (talk) 08:04, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
