Title: help an idiot out with gpg4win PLEASE!!
Post by: jjwentworth on July 14, 2013, 04:51 pm
hi guys im trying to do the community a favor and learn this encryption bullshit. i know theres already hundreds of threads on pgp tutorials but i need help in lamens terms. i downloaded gpg4win. it only gave me a private key. the key is like 6 letters and numbers hardly the 12 lines of letters and numbers im accustomed to seeing on vendors pages stating there public keys. it also never gave me a public key so i assumed i would just make a new key and designate one of those keys to being my public key and the origional one supllied to me to be my private key. again the second key generated was only like 6 letters and numbers not the 12 lines im used to seeing. as of this point can someone tell me if they think im doing this right up till this point? im also having trouble sending a message to my friend who is also just trying to learn this but ill save that issue until someone can tell me if what i explained so far sounds correct. please help

Uninstall Gpg4Win and download GPG4USB, it's a hundred times easier to use...
http://gpg4usb.cpunk.de/

Better still - install Tails on a USB drive and use that instead of Windows...

Forget GPG4WIN and download GPG4USB.  It's a far more intiutive interface -- you'll be up and running with it in minutes.

I'll test it out and write it up over the next couple of days.

You dont need to run gpg4usb in Tails, it comes with an encryption/decryption applet already installed.

So, you use Tails encyption?

When I try and do anything with the clipboard, it just tells me I it has invalid input data and that the action cannot be performed...

I FULLY agree with everyone here suggesting GPG4USB, Its what I downloaded when I first found the road and was learning about one important aspect of it called PGP encryption "what the fuck is that???"

trust me and everyone here that is suggesting it, you will thank yourself and everyone here, it is perfect for people trying to grasp the concept, you will be making orders in no time .

On a related note, your PGP encrypted address is rendered useless if the vendor sends you a tracking number in plaintext, because an adversary can use that number to find your address. Tracking numbers are actually worse, because addresses are deleted when the order is marked In Transit, usually within a couple of days, while tracking numbers will be stored in SR messages for 3 months, even after they are deleted.

If you encrypt your address, you should instruct the vendor not to send you a tracking number, but then again, they should be smart enough to figure that out for all of their customers who encrypt their addresses.

I agree that gpg4usb is the one to go for but if you insist on using gpg4win, here's a basic starter's guide I wrote to help get you started.  :)

1. Copy the Public Key of the person you want to send a message to.

2. Open a text editor, such as Notepad, and paste the Public Key. Name the file and save it to your desired location on your PC.

3. Open GPA (Gpg4win), click IMPORT, locate the file you just saved with the Public Key in it, and double click it. It will then show up in KEY MANAGER where it is stored for future use along with any other Public Keys you wish to keep.

4. Then click on CLIPBOARD, the 2nd icon in from the right at the top of the page. Type the message you wish to send to the recipient and then click ENCRYPT. Click on the Public Key of the person your sending the message to (should now be highlighted), then click OK at the bottom.

5. Then copy the encrypted message and paste it in a PM to the recipient and send it.

6. REMEMBER - Include your Own Public Key in this message if you wish to receive an encrypted response from the recipient. You can find this by RIGHT-CLICKING your key in KEY MANAGER, then copy/pasting it. :)

Ya, I've practiced sending encrypted messages for gpg4win. and I can do that no problem. It's just that I recently switched over to Tails, and am having difficulty using the preinstalled pgp it comes with...

Tails has a rather elegant setup when it comes to using GPG.  In Tails, there is a editor plugin which can be used to encrypt/decrypt/sign/verify the contents of the document being edited.

Just use gedit to compose your message, and then select encrypt/decrypt/sign from the edit menu.

Naturally, to use GPG in Tails, you will have to have copied your PGP keyrings to the .gnupg directory, which is a sub-directory of amnesia.

U can't use GPG4WIN on tails because that version is "4win" for windows, but you can use the other versions. I just thought it was funny.
