Hello am in dire straights at the moment i have been away for about 6 months and my Thunderbird has automatically updated its self and i can not connect to tormail from Thunderbird . I have tried reinstalling tor and Thunderbird to no avail .
Yes its a mac but i had it working before smoothly. I have instruction here from previous posts but it still don't work
anyone else using a mac snow leopard 10.6.8 with Thunderbird who can get me back online and get purchasing please help

Look for an extension called "torbirdy". That worked for me.

Change Socks4 to Socks5 and try that.

downloaded torbirdy and now it brings up a new ALERT

No, you need to use the hidden service domain for the server name, jhiwjjlqpyawmpjx.onion
All that other stuff was right before, I think TorBirdy changed it. You need to change it back.

i think its something to do with the outgoing server (smtp) on thunderbird
does anyone know the correct settings for this in thunderbird (where it says view setting for this account )

The server name still says smtp.tormail.org. Like I said, you need to change it to the onion domain.
Also, are you using the browser bundle to supply your Tor instance? If so, I think I know what's wrong.
The Mac and Linux versions of the browser bundle use a random Socks port other than 9050. You need to force it to use port 9050.
onion icon in system tray -> Settings -> Advanced -> uncheck "Configure control port automatically"
DO NOT change the ControlPort to 9050. Leave it at 9051. The ControlPort is different from the SocksPort.
Restart the browser bundle and the SocksPort will be 9050.
Configure Thunderbird with all the settings exactly as they are written on the TorMail Help instructions,
EXCEPT change Socks4 to Socks5.
Let me know if that worked.

hello astor its still not working but now is asking for me to type a new password in which is new
also yes its the bundle version and it wont change to 9050 keeps sticking at 9051

Like I said, the port you see in the GUI is the ControlPort. You're not supposed to change it. If you followed my instructions, the SocksPort has been changed to 9050.
You say that it's asking for a password. So when you click "Get Mail", does it say "connecting" in the status bar, followed by "connected", and then it asks for you password? If that's case, you are connected, but your username and/or password are wrong.

ENTER NEW PASSWORD / cancel/ retry
am close i know it i can nearly smell it now.......

Why not use the normal tormail squirrel mail service? Seriously you prolly use tormail for illegal shit anyway, why would you want to download that to your hard drive?
At least try using squirrel mail to make sure you can get in using your username and password...

What you need to do is to change the settings in the Tor Browser Bundle.
- Control-click the green Vidalia icon in the Dock
- Click on Control Panel
- Click Settings
- Click Advanced
- Uncheck Configure Control Port Automatically
- Click OK
- Click Hide
Now Thunderbird should go through Vidalia, and you should now be able to login.

Not that this is really helpful, but I tried for several hours to get Thunderbird to work on my Mac/Airport Extreme. Never did get it. I use Tor Mail - Squirrel mail.
I don't even remember why I wanted Thunderbird in the first place.

I've got it working on a MacBook Pro, running Lion (OS X 10.7.5) and it runs perfectly. You have to ensure that you have made the changes per the Tormail help page, and then made the changes I listed above, to the Tor Browser Bundle configuration. The Tor Browser Bundle must be up and running (you'll see the Vidalia icon in the Dock) for Thunderbird to work with Tormail accounts.
Some people prefer to have their email stored on their own machines; this is one reason to run Thunderbird.

I also struggled with this for three or four days straight and finally got it to work mainly with the help of this post...Here are my settings in case you are still struggling...
1. Open the Vidalia Control Panel --> Settings --> Advanced --> Uncheck "Configure ControlPort Automatically" --> click OK
It should show "Address: 127.0.0.1 : 9051". Restart Tor. The address will remain 9051, and NOT change to 9050
Now open Thunderbird...
2. In the config editor filter type in network.proxy.socks_remote_dns and change it to true by double-clicking (preferences --> advanced --> general --> config editor...)
3. Go to preferences --> advanced --> network & disk space --> settings...
Click manual proxy configuration:
HTTP Proxy: 127.0.0.1 Port 8118
SSL Proxy: 127.0.0.1 Port 8118
Socks Proxy: 127.0.0.1 Port 9050
SOCKS v5!!!!
Click OK
4. Go to --> "create a new account" and enter your name, email address (username@tormail.net), and password, set the protocol as IMAP
5. Under the "Mail Account Setup" window for this account:
Server Settings
Server name: jhiwjjlqpyawmpjx.onion
Port 143
Connection security: None
Authentication method: Password, transmitted insecurely
Outgoing Server (SMTP)
add a new server if you have to with the settings...
Server name: jhiwjjlqpyawmpjx.onion
Port: 25
username: (your username) --> this step probably isnt necessary but just in case
Connection security: None
Authentication method: Password, transmitted insecurely
Press OK
Once you go to get mail it will ask you for your password but it should work this time
Edit: after typing this up I realized I can only RECEIVE mail not send it so if you figure that part out it be great if you'd let me know what you did!!

Yes it is strange. When I try to send a message I get the error message:
Sending of message failed.
The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server smtp.tormail.net was lost in the middle of the transaction. Try again or contact your network administrator.
For whatever reason it appears that thunderbird is still trying to connect to the smtp.tormail.net server rather than the jhiwjjlqpyawmpjx.onion even though I have it set to the .onion server...

OMG finaily got it to work (well some) after 5 days my wife was going nuts at me thanks for the posts....

If it is encrypted with his public key or any other public key only the matching private key can decrypt it...
Edit: If you look on the page before, he has posted a public key and two encrypted messages. There is no way these messages can be decrypted without the matching private key.

You misunderstand how the process works. When two parties want to communicate securely, the exchange public keys. For example, you give me your public key, which I use to encrypt messages to you, and I give you my public key, which you use to encrypt messages to me. (A link to my public key can be found in my .sig).
Each of us uses our private key halves to decrypt the messages encrypted with our public keys. Naturally, you guard the private half of your PGP key more closely than you do your credit card or your wallet full of cash.
