Title: How do we know the REAL Silk Road address?
Post by: SorryMario on January 04, 2013, 02:11 am
Hi all, SorryMario here.

I am wondering... how can I know if I have the correct Silk Road address? I've read that the one shown on Wikipedia could easily be altered to direct folks to any number of spoofed addresses run by government stings or people scamming bitcoins.

I currently use http://silkroadvb5piz3r.onion - is this the right one?

Also, if the address ever changes again, what secure ways are there to find out the new address?

That's the right one.  Memorize it and stop using wikipedia.

If the address were to change, not sure why it would, but you would be able to find it here on the forums.

That's a relief  ;D Now that I've placed my first order I started thinking "what if...?" (naturally at a point when it would be too late to do anything about it).

I heard that the address was changed once a year or so ago (but maybe that was just a false rumor). I only used Wikipedia the first time to get the address, then kept it in my password manager from then on. I'm not sure why the addresses aren't simpler, like "silkroad.onion or silkroadforums.onion, but I'll defintely keep them stored in a safe place! Cheers.

The names can't be made simpler, at least not easily -- part of the name is a key value; it's the way .onion domains work.  As the Wikipedia article states:

Quote
Addresses in the .onion pseudo-TLD are opaque, non-mnemonic, 16-character alpha-semi-numeric hashes which are automatically generated based on a public key when a hidden service is configured. These 16-character hashes can be made up of any letter of the alphabet, and decimal digits beginning with 2 and ending with 7, thus representing an 80-bit number in base32.

Is your "password manager" encrypted?  You might want to consider making that a bit more difficult for a hacker or LE to obtain.

Hmm. I assume it is. I use KeypassX which uses 256bit AES and keep it on USB. Granted it doesn't give me plausible deniability like putting it on an Truecrypt encrypted partition would, but as far as I know the password database cannot be opened without the master password.  :-X

If you have recommendations for better security, I'm all ears!  :)

Good fucking grief people. Boooook.................maaaaark................  ::) Then you don't have to remember that Aussie beer and pizza mnemonic. How did it go again...............?

There is a post on one of the other threads (would quote it if I had any fucking clue as to where I saw it before), but someone suggested a really great way to remember the address.  Just remember: vb5piz(zas)3r(omas)(and).onion
vb 5 pizzas, 3 romas, and an onion
vb5piz3r.onion
easy as pizza!

Or slightly different............

silkroad

visual basic

5 pizzas

3 returned

.... had seen this was a way that one member used to remember the link: silkroadvb5piz3r.onion

pmsl SorryMario......... every time you start a post it looks like, "Sorry, but............." (Name lol) It's there everytime I turn around. Yar elephant dude billiken, I popped your cherry but keep it to yourself, mmmkay, or it might come out really weird........ + 1 for correct SR launch instruction. Man, feels like I've been talking under wet cement for whole of last month about not arriving at SR via onion.to , Wikipedia, or even Wikilinks, TorDir or TorLinks. Or whatevever the next scam is. Yar, I'm well aware that TorDir is run/hosted by the same person in charge of BMR (can't remember name and title; I'm baked right now).......... coincidentally, BMR is the only advertised site on the front page (or anywhere else), also coincidentally, despite having about 4 links to Silk Toad, none of them work/is the correct one. Go figure...........  ::)

I guess this problem with new members trying to find SR will persist as you can't simply google "Silk Road URL" and expect it to be #1 on the first page. Wikipedia and Hidden Wiki are undoubtedly the two main SR launch sites for people attempting to drill down, protagonists of SR know that and modify links accordingly. (Bastards........ Go the phuc home if you've nothing better to do than attack sites all day every day that are fated to fall on your Illuminati black list lol)

Piece out. Drive safely.  :)

Haha, yeah I actually have the vb5piz3r somewhat memorized now. Mneumonics plus a weird memory (I can remember somewhat random sequences) helps. Even the dkn255hz262ypmii looks tractable... Doken 255 hertz 262 why pee in my eye... hmm I'm working on it.

And the "SorryMario" is just the Super Mario Bros theme I'm running with on SR - my SR account is PrincezzToadstool... TORmail addy is InAnotherCastle, and on the forum I'm Sorry Mario. None of this makes sense unless you played the old NES game lol.

Afraid not :-\ That was before my time. I was more into Doom and Quake and Mortal Kombat, then I got bored of blowing ^ zombies and trying to get fatalities, babalities, animalities, friendships and brutalities and did something a little more constructive.

pmal "pee in my eye". + 1 as I pop someone's cherry for the second time today. (I'm the Karma Prostitute -- everyone gets a turn.)

If you don't mind using a shortened url, here is one through google. Make sure you have your other security measure in order when using it.

I find the easiest way to remember it would be like this:

silkroad - vb - spizer (5piz3r)

To the OP.

Make sure that the address is @onion.com

eg       s1IKr04D@onion.com               is a valid SR address.

onion.com??

Wouldn't that get you The Onion (satire) site?

I think weedmylips has the easiest one to remember - visual basic 5 pizzas 3 returned/vb5piz3r.

Now as for the forums, I'm thinking "Dick in two, 55 hertz to 62, wipe'em, aye-aye!"  :o dkn255hz262ypmii... Yeah, that's the ticket.

slip is just trolling...  Personally I remember the sr address as "silkroad vb5 pfizer(as in the drug company)" just remove the 'f' and make the 'e' a '3' like l33tspeak. The forum url doesn't really need to be memorized though I have the general format of it in my head.

some good suggestions here for using mnemonics to memorize it.
I just keep the blighter bookmarked (or write it down on rice paper ready to eat), but this might not be good for security.

But then again if everything is password protected and all the cops find is a bookmark, a bookmark alone is not illegal.
But I am not a vendor and my security is not as high.

Yar, that doesn't exactly help me lol. Quite erotic, but that sounds hard to translate. I have an idea that I've been toying with for a couple of months....... what if your were to press the Bookmark Now button? This may very well save as a bookmark, which may very well load if pressed again. Hmmmm, I'm going to give it a shot. Fingers crossed. Wish me luck. I'll let you know how I got on  ;)

Bookmark, you say? That might just be crazy enough to work. I'll try it. If you never see me again, we'll know it didn't work.

But what if I have a paranoid episode and have to delete all Tor related programs from my computer and do a 35x wipe from my hard drive? Then where the bookmarks be??? No, I gotta somehow burn it into my memory with a soldering iron.

But I'll never forget yooouuuuu Razorspyne  :-*
