Title: PGP..... Lots of help needed
Post by: 2Leftfeet on November 14, 2012, 02:54 pm
Please could some kind soul point me in the right direction?
I'm using windows, and have had a go at creating a key with a prog called Kleopatra......
Not sure if its the right tool for the job or not  :o

I've tried searching the forum for PGP, but all I seem to find is keys that have already been generated.

What I'm looking for is some kind of tutorial and a little hand holding.......

Hope someone can help a very confused 50 something hippy

It really isn't that hard.

first, you have to import the vendors public key. Copy it from his vendor page and save as .txt file. Then, in Kleopatra, click on file/import certificate (or simply press Strg+I) and select the .txt file.

Now you have to encrypt your message. To do this, save the message you want to encrypt as a .txt file, and in Kleopatra click on file/sign or encrypt file and choose the .txt you want to encrypt. In the next window Kleopatra asks you what you want to do. Encrypt the file only, do not sign it. Also it is important that you select the field where it says output as text (!).
In the next window, choose your vendors certificate you have imported before.
The encrypted message is saved as a .txt.asc file, open this file with text editor or notepad, it contains your PGP encrypted message.

(Its possible that there is a faster way to do this, but this has always worked for me.)

Stop using Kleopatra.

Download gpg4usb and follow this guide here: https://securityinabox.org/en/gpg4usb_portable

I was totally lost as well. I use Kleopatra, it is easy with this 'holding your hand each step of the way' guide, found here: http://p3lr4cdm3pv4plyj.onion/guides/kleotxt.html

I agree.  AND:  Prior to downloading, make sure the box for GPA is ticked as an option to be included with the download or you won't get a clipboard.  Still indebted to member Nightcrawler for turning me onto to gpg4usb  :-*

pgp4usb has it's own set of tutorials w/ screenshots - a real bonus!  Once you get going, if you want to practice please feel free to send me encrypted PMs if you want  :)

If you really expect anyone to help you out, you're going to have to provide a little more information.

- OS:  Windows, Mac, Linux?

- GPG front-end: Kleopatra, GPA, GPG4USB?

Really, if you're running Windows or Linux, you should be using GPG4USB -- you can be up and running in 10 minutes, flat.

you can always head over to : http://p3lr4cdm3pv4plyj.onion/ and read through the guides there.

GPG4USB seems to be the newer better way to go though, so if you've got it all setup and you've made some keys you can just test your setup here:

http://p3lr4cdm3pv4plyj.onion/test.php

Good luck to ya !

Thanks wicked, i just tried that link and its taking a long time to load after i pressed test...ah server went down, next time i'll see if it works. I managed to sort it out, but i dont seem to have a clipboard to paste the encrypted  message to? Does it have to be pasted to a clipboard first? ??? ;)

the clipboard is the windows clipboard - when you copy something (crtl+c) you're copying it TO your clipboard, and when you paste (crtl+v) you're pasting off your clipboard.

if you need to see whats on your clipboard, open up notepad, and goto edit, then paste.

I'm running Windows and gpa
i followed this guide http://p3lr4cdm3pv4plyj.onion/guides/shepj.html

I have a public key its in my sig below.  But I need to know whats next?

I guess what I need is someone's public key so i can try to send them a message or have them send me a test message.

I'm pulling my freaking hair out with this as well as others.  But I got the key so that must be half the battle.  I'm not even gonna mess with kleopatra thingy
that don't make any sense either.

thx for any help

GPA is shit- just download gpg4usb. It's cross compatible with Linux and you can import keys straight from your clipboard, meaning you don't need to create dozens of little text files for every key you import like you do with GPA.

I actually thought i had it. I sent a message to a local vendour and must look like an idiot.
I dont want my PGP fuck ups to hinder any future, and of course my first purchase.... :(

A window pops up and says no key found? I dont even know what my own key is, etc.

I gotta stop smoking weed, surely its not that freakin hard.... :-[ :-[ :-[

Whoa late edit, i did the test and it worked, i just had the clipboard shit going wrong..phew..

But how do i get my key so i can paste in my sig and look cool like everyone else..? I've posted it in the main PGP thread, but how do i post the short version of it?

I swear i just heard numerous face palming going on..hey what can i say, its suddenly a new WORLD!!  ;D ;D ;D
