Title: Fight Back Against Spammers by DDOSing their clearweb sites
Post by: FarmerBob on November 01, 2012, 05:23 am
Sometimes the best defense is a good offense.

If you see spam on the forums or receive spam in your inbox consider fighting back for a few hours.

Try DOS attacking them

Send garbage data to their website.  If enough people do it it can knock them offline.  At the very least it will drive up their bandwidth costs and hitting them in the wallet should teach them an important lesson.

Here's how you can do it:
Go to http://sourceforge.net/projects/loic
download the LOIC exe file (my virus scanner reports this as a "medium risk hacking tool" but oh well)
run the program and enter the spammer website in the "target url" box (for example www.btkoin.com) and hit "lock on"
In the "attack options" box select TCP or UDP and put in some random TCP/UDP message "fuck you spammers"
then hit the "IMMA CHARGIN MAH LAZER"

At this point it will begin flooding the site.  Leave it running when you're not using your computer and it will eat up their bandwidth.

I should disclose that I know very little about networks & computers but seem to have figured this out with the help of google.

I should also mention that if you do not wish to download an executable there is a web version at : http://lowc.comlu.com  But I'm not sure if it works right on my machine.  If anyone who knows more about this has suggestions feel free to add them.

Good Luck & Best Regards

Bob

Bob, this is not only BAD advice, it is DANGEROUS advice.

I watched a film the other day, "We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists"

One of the people featured in that film was a young man (Brian Mettenbrink) who naively joined the call by Anonymous to attack the Church of Scientology. He had downloaded LOIC, and used it to DDOS the Church's website.  Sometime later he was visited by the FBI, and ended up being charged with a computer crime.  He had assumed, in his naivete,  that this would be only a matter of a small fine, perhaps two hundred dollars or thereabouts.

So, imagine his surprise, when he was charged with a felony!  The prosecution painted him as some type of computer terrorist. The potential jail sentence was 5 years in jail, and $100,000 in fines.  He was convicted, and spent a year in jail, followed by a year of supervised release. After getting out of jail, under the terms of his release, he is unable to even so much as touch a computer -- if he does so, he goes back to jail.

You are NOT ANONYMOUS if you use LOIC -- you can be traced very easily.  If anyone follows your advice, they potentially risk criminal prosecution, just for using LOIC.  If someone's computer is forensically examined, and the authorities determine that they are buying drugs off of Silk Road, then the computer crime charges may only be the beginning.

I don't think the computer equivalent of burglars are going to be running to the FBI for help if their sites get "attacked" or whatever the fuck this is. Does a drug dealer call the police when he gets robbed?

Seriously, who the fuck are they gonna run to?

I'd still follow nightcrawler's advice, though, just to be safe.

Nightcrawler, you do make a very good point.  When you're on the clearnet there is no anonymity.  But I'd assume everyone here has a fully encrypted hard drive so there's nothing to forensically examine, but nightcrawler is right that in the USA DOSing can be prosecuted under the computer fraud and abuse act.  But I also agree with hardhustle and suspect LE wouldn't help them though as they likely lack the political or financial connections to get any response from the FBI.

The handful of others who have been arrested made the stupid mistake of targeting the rich and/or influential.  If you were to be part of mass attacks against the US banks (anonymous) or LE websites, or the church of Scientology you can expect they'd use their influence with the US government to try to get a response.

although I am surprised the church of Scientology has that sort of influence in America.... Sad really...

I doubt LE cares to help the spammers, but I could be wrong.... This is probably safer to do than driving drunk, and also likely safer than riding a motorcycle without a helmet, but it's not without it's risks I suppose.  If you are in a country where flooding a website with garbage data is NOT a crime feel free to give this a shot.  It may be a futile attempt though as SR has nowhere near the users of clearnet sites like the 4-chan boards but it would at least feel good to get a punch in.

Anyways this seems to be a primitive method of attack and requires large bandwidths to be effective... and i'm in a rural area and have the SLOWEST uplink you've ever seen, I played around with it this morning for a few minutes on some crappy cheap-webhost blogs and could only manage to knock myself offline.  If anybody out there has a fast fiberoptic connection (and not afraid of the risk, not in US maybe) see if you can even cause a slowdown.

or perhaps if enough people who are not worried about the FBI could all time their attack to the same day or hour?

I know there are computer savvy people lurking around here... I'd hope someone here who is an expert can devise a good way to screw with them?

But the sad fact is with these guys targeting so very many bitcoin related sites if there was a way to take their site down it probably would have already been done by now, and probably is not possible, or at least not easy.

Best Regards,
Bob

You would do better reporting them to Paypal and Google. Google will eventually Target the site with their browser as a scam site and Paypal hopefully would freeze their account.
