Title: Please add reminder to the registering of a new account--DON'T USE YOUR SR SN!!
Post by: LittleEddy on October 25, 2012, 10:07 pm
I screwed up and many months ago I registered for these forums using my SR screen name. It wasn't until 60 posts later I realized I made a big noobie mistake. So for this not to be repeated again, please post a reminder on the sign up page not to use your SR sn.

I agree that being more anonymous is better but at my level I take the small risk just so I am known in the community

What is the problem with using the same name for both?  ;)

as far as i know there is nothing wrong with it.  I could be wrong though.  The only thing is i would suggest making another account here for the forums which you can use for instance if you had a bad experience with a vendor or just need to leave a negative review (ex. poor quality product, shipping was less than stealth etc..)  This way you can be open and honest without the fear of reprisal.  (we give these vendors our addresses.  safe drop or not i don't want to burn a perfectly good address if i don't have to.)  At least this is how it was explained to me.  Any correction are welcome.

It's a case of insurance, essentially. Let me illustrate by way of scenario:

Let's assume that I use the user-id Little_Guy on Silk Road proper, and that I use the very same user-id here on the Forum. In the worst case scenario, the vendor may be an idiot and doing stuff like selling locally and attracting the attention of the neighbors who then inform the police.

This is how the vendor Trojan was busted in Calgary earlier in the year. If the vendor was careless, and kept copies of customer addresses, even temporarily, and the police got their hands on these, they might be able to learn that Little_Guy is actually Jean Chretien, who lives at:

Jean Chretien,
123 Maple Street,
Edmonton, Alberta,
Canada
H0H 0H0

Any defense attorney worth his salt is going to use the argument that anyone could have ordered some drugs to have sent to his client Jean Chretien. That argument completely falls apart when the police do a search on the Forums for Little_Guy and they see any number of posts describing drugs they have purchased on Silk Road from this or that vendor, talking about their quality, etc.

So, in a nutshell, that is why it is a good idea to have two separate user-ids.

I see your point. But where is the physical evidence? Couldn't I say that my address and name was used without my knowledge? I can appreciate the apprehension in the use of the same name in both SR and the forums, yet we can have plausible deniability in either case. I may be completely wrong, just saying...  ;)
