Yes, but the specifics vary according to which smartphone you're talking about.  There are definitely solutions for both Android and iOS.

At the risk of revealing my status as an old fart, I'll never understand this literal infatuation between the younger generation and their phones.

Maybe it comes from growing up when there were no mobile phones, I don't know. What I DO know, is that phones are RISKY.  For starters, they're little better than GPS ankle-bracelets issued to prisoners subject to house arrest or parolees.  Secondly, police can examine these without a warrant, even pursuant to something as inconsequential as a traffic stop.  Officers in Michigan have been issued Cellubrite devices which can copy the entire contents of smartphones for later examination. It has actually been reported that officers are using these to image phones as the result of traffic stops.

As far as this old fart is concerned, your secure communications should be conducted at home, where the cops would need a warrant to enter.

Encrypting the memory card is useless compared to the crazy amount of info these things give out constantly. I'm with guru on this one, avoid having any sort of evidence on your phone, encrypted or not.
