Title: Dreampop, darkwave, whatever you call it: beautiful!
Post by: Darkwave on June 29, 2012, 05:35 pm
Naturally by my moniker it's obvious I am really into the darkwave or dreampop or ambient genre of pop music. Cocteau twins, Dead Can Dance, Bel Canto, My Bloody Valentine. Any other fans out there?

I don't get Music from the Hearts of Space on the radio any longer where I live, and I miss it terribly. It's just too expensive for me to pay to listen on their website.

I'm pretty open to most types of music (except country, just not something I can enjoy), like gtelop I don't know much about it but it seems alright. My personal genre of choice would be Hip-hop from the 80s-90s, can't stand whats going on today, the genre has completely changed (much like dubstep before it came to america :\)

There are some bands I haven't listened to for a while.  Have you tried Delerium (the FLA side project)?  And not just Silence, although it is an awesome track.

Okay I listened through the artists you mentioned. All very good. Will dig even deeper into this. I didn't realize first though that it was old, yeah "old", music. Another artist I stumbled upon awhile ago is Grimes. It was labeled "dreampop". Feels very dreamy indeed, but much different from this "old" stuff. Lot's more beat into it, modern computer stuff and the likes. Think you might appreciate it anyways.

Delerium, I'll look into it Louis. Btw, anybody familiar with Pandora? Sipposedly if you input your preferences, like an example of a band playing your favorite type of music, it can deliver a whole bunch of other bands playing similar kinds of music.

But I wonder how an automated thing like that can really deliver the goods, I think that a feeling that a band gives you is a very subjective thing, subject to all kinds of influences. A computer couldn't give you good examples that will make you feel like you feel when you listen to your faves, right?

Yes, most of these are from the eighties. This decade had a hell of a lot of great music, what with the Police, and some of those brit bands that came out, and Tears for Fears, hell even Culture Club at least in the beginning.

Yeah good.

Haven't got to the eighties yet. Started out in early sixties and just worked my way to the seventies. Been to the ninties hip-hop for awhile. The eighties on other hand I haven't really yet experienced. Damn, there's too much music in this world. I'll have the rest of my life just exploooor-ooor.-oor-ing-ing-ing. *BLISS*

There are a few other instrumental FLA side projects, but Delerium is probably the most popular.

As far as I am aware it is not available where I am and I can't be bothered circumventing the geolocation necessary to try it out.

Software like that analysis the music itself (usually the MIDI signals or the waveform) looking for patterns which it then matches to an internal index of other music known to it.  Software for identifying a song you recognise, but don't know the name of, works in a similar fashion except it checks for an exact match (possibly with noise reduction or filters when used with a mobile phone).

Technology is creepy. Soon it will know what we want before we, ourselves, know what we want. Ohh ouch goosebumps.

Ok. So I've exprienced some of a side project now. How about you tell me about the middle project? Ef-el-ah

If you're in the US Pandora is a great app, and depending on your morals, you can get a version on cydia (iPhone JB store) that allows you to skip the ads making it a virtually free personal sirius/xm radio. Only downside is that it sometimes plays music that has nothing to do with your taste besides a common name xD

Krypto, is there a similar service to Pandora that's maybe more reliable?

Hmm, nothing really comes to mind, I've yet to find another site/app that uses the "music genome project" to determine what music to play. If you're outside the US the best advice I can think of is to use a USA proxy or vpn (I think pandora will block you from streaming if you're not)

Sorry if this is of no help :(

This is my favorite genre. Check out Mazzy Star (So that tonight I might see), Luna (Bewitched), Slowdive (Souvlaki), Mojave 3.  Most of this is from the late 90s.

Also check out Asobi Seksu (Citrus). Just saw them perform in Bangkok a few months ago. Excellent show.
