Cheers mate.
You're welcome.

You don't want to use Torchat. In addition to being a buggy piece of shit, it also requires that you run as a hidden service which in itself makes you far less anonymous. Torchat is not secure.

Maybe it's just my status as an old fart revealing itself, but I've never trusted any chat program. Gawd knows there's been enough vulnerabilities found in them over the years.
Personally speaking, I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole.
Whereas I just can't be bothered screwing around with a chat client and Tor. Jabber with OTR in "real life" (clearnet) happens sometimes, though.

It is possible for OTR to be MITMed pretty easily unless you use the provided tools to detect / avoid this. Most people don't but they really should.
More info please ?

..isnt jabber the better option? what were the reasons again for chosing silc pidgin over jabber?!
Thanks

Pidgin is just a client (a very good one), Jabber is a protocol. People use Pidgin to access Jabber accounts (as well as other IM protocols).

..silc plugin in pidgin versus any jabber enabled client (including pidgin)?!
there are numerous protocols that can be enabled in pidgin depending on where you got it from, which were included and the facebook etc
ones you've added.

Right, I misread what you were saying and had forgotten about SILC (haven't even looked at it in at least a couple of years).
SILC is currently trying to become a standard protocol, but still hasn't even made it to an initial RFC. Unlike XMPP (Jabber) which has at least four initial RFCs, three of which have been superceded by more recent ones. This is at least indicative of a greater degree of effort being devoted to XMPP.
SILC appears to have some other limitations, such as only supporting SHA-1 and MD5 hashes. The crypto FAQ on their site indicated there are a number of items supported by the protocol which their own software does not yet support (e.g. using OpenPGP keys or SSH keys). Which reminds me why I stopped looking at it: it's a good idea, but not ready for production use.

..no problem perhaps my initial post didnt explain; seems to me there isnt any more silc (client or plugin) development thought the last update
was around 2008; their documentation is not clear and is a general run-around, so called developers dont get back to you -so i agree seems
pointless and a dead-end, was just curious why the decision to use pidgin +silc for the initial silc chat room if jabber protocol (client) is the nuts?!

As near as I can tell, you were the first person to mention SILC at all. Unless that's what is used by TorChat, that is. I'm not sure because I don't run it.
