Title: Public key weirdness
Post by: thirdeyevision on June 09, 2012, 11:21 pm
Hey there!

I haven't had a problem until now with ordering or using PGP for communication on here, but:

Today i wanted to order from a new vendor and when i tried to encrypt my message he didn't appear in my recipients list.
He does appear in my Keychain (This is with GPG on OS X btw) with the only difference to others in there being, that there's no subkey listed..

Is this why it didn't work and can i fix it on my part?

Thanks!

I am having the same problem.

After I've imported this one sellers key into my keychain, for some reason no sub key shows up. So when I try and encrypt a message to him his name doesn't appear under the list of recipients. I've tried updating his info from the key server, and it says no keys are found. Is this a security measure I should be aware of regarding sending my key to the key server in the first place? Is the lack of a sub key the reason he is not showing up as a recipient? Any help with this would be GREATLY appreciated. Thx and stay safe..

+1 here on a Mac, exact same problem, I tried deleting the pref files for GPG apps etc, but still not working- would love a solution!

Awesome. Thanks Guru. Sent you a PM with the key in question. Will update here if we can get to the bottom of it. Any other OSX users having this issue?

Yes, I'm having exact same problem (also osX)!!! So glad to hear I'm not the only one. Thank you for the explanation Guru.

The key that doesn't work for me (no subkey) belongs to sesampino.

I just tried encrypting something to sesampino's key and it worked fine.  I'm also using OS X, but the difference is I'm using version 1.4.12 on the command line instead of GPGTools.

The key doesn't have a subkey, but other Hushmail keys in my keyring do have subkeys.  This may just be the result of something odd or sesampino may have chosen to do this (it's been a long time since I've bothered with Hushmail).

who the fuck still uses hushmail? we have known since 2007 that hushmail doesn't actually encrypt anything, and that they cooperate with the feds. they handed over "encrypted" emails to the feds in operation raw deal, and more recently in operation adam bomb.

Yep.  I wouldn't touch it with a 50' cattle prod!  Far better to use Tor Mail and a local GPG installation.

Hey'all

I have been having the exact problem with the recipients not being selectable when encrypting (OSX), it only seems to be 1 vendor in particular and ironically the guy I have identified so far as being the person I most would like to deal with regularly!!

GRRRRR

Looks like to me it seems to be the much shorter keys?

Pm sent Guru, hope you can help me 2??

Many thanks (:

I am experiencing the same problem, running Lion with the latest version of GPG Tools. I have no trouble encrypting messages to the majority of vendors but have recently come across two vendors who do not display as recipients when I try to encrypt a message. Their information still appears in GPG Keychain Access. I've tried re-importing the keys, re-installing GPG Tools, restarting, etc, to no avail.

Both of the vendors who do not display as recipients are using Version: GnuPG v2.0.17 (MingW32), though I have been able to successfully encrypt messages from other vendors using this version. Also, both of the problematic public keys appear much shorter than usual (just ~12 lines). I have no idea if that is relevant.

It seems like a number of Mac users have encountered this problem. Does anyone have any leads on a solution? Is there an alternative Mac encryption process that might let us encrypt messages to these vendors?

I doubt it is your GPG installation, can you PM the the two keys that aren't working or their URLs and I'll have a look.

It's possible the keys could be corrupt. Send me a copy via PM and I'll have a look.

You could try using the command line from a terminal, and see if that works.... I've got a new Macbook Pro with Lion 10.7.4 on it; PM me the keys, and I'll see if I have the same problems as you're having.

Guru

It'll work for you, I just looked at both keys and the one thing they have in common is they lack subkeys.  They both behave on the command line.

I think that if you switch to the nightly build I'm listing here, it will solve your problem.  It seems to have done the trick for at least two other people in this thread.

GPGTools_Installer-trunk.dmg   04-Jun-2012 20:06   23M

You can download this version at: http://nightly.gpgtools.org/

Guru

Thanks Guru, will give that a shot and update the thread with results.
