Title: Down for maintenance?
Post by: bedtime666 on September 09, 2013, 10:58 pm
Tried to access just a few moments ago and received a message about being back up asap. Just wanted to confirm anyone else was getting this.. And possibly clarification as to whats going down if its not security sensitive?

Thanks any & all with holy clarification :D

I wonder why they decide to do maintenance during the peak traffic times in the U.S.  I am no network engineer, but one would think they would wait until the middle of the night U.S time or early in the morning to do their maintenance.  Maybe the server is being so overloaded that it is easier to shut down the site until the traffic dies down.  Who knows?

I just have to get this off my chest but this SR being down all of the time is just becoming ridiculous. How are we as vendors supposed to get our work down while battling the site to stay up. I just do not understand it, while I appreciate the changes of the feedback system etc, it is more important to me to just get the site to work better rather than updating changes. I feel like the staff should at least conquer the goal of keeping the site up ATLEAST 80% of the time.  I have been a vendor here for 2 years now and I always bite my tongue when it comes to the site being down but I am VERY frustrated this time. GRRR

Hopefully ASAP to them means less then 5 hours.

Do not think it is *planned* maintenance.

While it can be annoying most of the downtime recently has been due to intermitent tor issues due to the botnet that moved to the tor network recently, so SR isn't to blame for that.  Of course, at the moment it was intentionally taken down for some reason, but over the past several days I think it was all tor outages.

It seems to be back up now.  And things finally seem to be speeding along for me in terms of access to the forums and SR.

Agreed. I haven't been on SR for a while now, but I run a few relays and visit a number of hidden sites regularly and can definitely say tor is creaking under the pressure of the botnet.

Might be the guy behind Skynet, or just someone massively emulating the idea. Tor is a convenient shortcut for lazy exploiters to ante-up security for their scams. With some effort, though, a network like this could have been turned into a very secure, resource rich p2p ecosystem.

Just have to wait and see how/if the tor project deals with this. Until then SR & every other hidden service is probably going to continue running sub-par, unfortunately.

Still down for me... I get the log in page but then get the dreaded "Silk Road is temporarily closed. We will reopen asap." message.

We have uptime of 98%, which - for one of the most popular .onion sites by traffic volume - is pretty damn good.

Silk Road has been live for approximately 950 days. Counting the 14 day period of 'up and down' downtime that the site was largely inaccessible for as one block of constant downtime, and allowing 5 days for previous maintenance and unscheduled downtime (in reality it has been a much less than that, but we'll use that figure for argument's sake), that brings us to total downtime of 19 days out of 950 days.

19 as a percentage of 950 is 2%.

It's hard to argue that uptime of 98% is 'ridiculous' given the nature of Silk Road, and the scope of our adversaries.

Please note that recent connectivity issues have nothing to do with Silk Road; they are, in fact, issues with the Tor network itself being overloaded.

Yes, sorry, spoke too soon, have been logged out again. Oh well, I managed to get on yesterday and order my drugs, one of which came today so I'm high and happy for now.

Thanks Libertas, I appreciate the hard stats, and that is crazy impressive considering the obstacles SR faces. I will remember those figures!

Also, why didn't DPR start a thread verifying it and give a brief explanation of what's going on? I like when he does that. I thought that was just "the norm" by now. Come on, DPR.

If it wasn't planned he was probably working on fixing something quickly and felt that stopping to give us the play by play would have just extended the downtime.

Good point.
He still could have put up a little something something up after the fact but oh well.

Exactly, Maintenance to the site is surely allocated to a certain time of the day, so we should get a head up about it too, rather than refreshing a page for hours!

Exactly Jolly.  A quick heads up could save everyone lost time, especially for us vendors.  It is still down for me by the way...
