Title: Stolen BTC
Post by: doodoo79 on August 27, 2013, 04:39 pm
Today I had just under 1 btc stolen from my SR account. This has never happened before and I don't know what to do. I've never shared my password or PIN. I contacted support but haven't heard back yet. Am I just fucked? Does this happen often? Are you supposed to change your pass/PIN EVERYTIME you make a deposit? This fucking sucks.

Go to account at the top and then on the right hand side click on account history. You might be able to atleast see where your BTC went to.

If the funds are gone and they were not withdrawn by you, your account was compromised and your bitcoins were stolen, most likely as a result of entering the login credentials you use for Silk Road on another site, or using an incorrect Silk Road URL. As the Bitcoin protocol is irreversible by design, we are unable to recover your coins.

You should change your password and PIN immediately (you can do this on the 'Settings' page). They should both be changed to something unique and complex that you have never used before, neither on Silk Road nor any other site.

Please ensure that you either memorize or bookmark the real address: [silkroadvb5piz3r.onion] and do not enter your Silk Road login credentials at ANY other URL (including other marketplaces - use a different password and PIN for those.)

You should also regularly check your system for keyloggers, dataloggers and rootkits, and ensure that you always use a unique username and complex password that you do not / have not used anywhere else, especially on another marketplace.

FALSE ALARM!! Support contacted me and said my SR btc address was archived, and they fixed it. Didn't know I was supposed to frequently renew my SR btc address but that's what they said to do. Thanks for the info though guys. My SR pass and pin are unique to SR but I think I'll still change them frequently just to be safe!

Ah, from your initial message it sounded as though the BTC were already in your account, and were then removed, not that you were waiting for a deposit. :)

Well according to Blockchain it had gone through (43 confirmations), then there was a withdrawal from the SR address to 2 unknown addresses. To be honest I've got a lot of learning to do about how the whole BTC transfer system works. But yeah it was seeing that withdrawal on Blockchain that made me think I'd been had. Oh well, you live and learn!

Unless you see a 'Withdrawal' in your Account History, there hasn't been a withdrawal from your account. What you were seeing on blockchain.info was the Silk Road tumbler in action. Don't worry though, everybody's new to Bitcoin once and nobody is ever an expert at the beginning! :)

Thread locked as resolved.
