Title: Why are so many threads being deleted without explanation?
Post by: kmfkewm on June 26, 2013, 07:10 pm
First it was the thread on the NSA illegal spying program, which I know must have been deleted by a mod because the OP reposted it and then it was deleted again. Then it was the thread on how to anonymize and encrypt telephone calls. Now it is the thread on Tor versus the NSA. None of these threads have been controversial at all, and no explanation has been given as to why they were mysteriously deleted. Are we not supposed to talk about the capabilities of the NSA? Are we not supposed to talk about how to secure telecommunications? I would like to know the general reasoning why these threads are being deleted, because I am sick of investing time in writing posts only to see them vanish without any explanation.

Are you sure they aren't just being moved to other boards?

I suppose that they could be being moved to sub forums that I don't have access to, but it seems that they are being deleted as my post history doesn't show that I have posted in any of them. I did make a reply to the original NSA thread that ended up being moved to off topic and not deleted, but the OP reposted the thread and PMed me that it was deleted again. The other threads are either being moved into a sub forum I don't have access to or they are being deleted or dropped from the database somehow. I was a bit surprised honestly, considering there was absolutely nothing controversial in any of the threads, and I have never seen threads deleted here before, but over the past couple of days there have been at least four that vanished. Two people have talked with me in PM about it and they also have the impression that the threads have been deleted. At first I figured it might be the OP deleting the thread, but I was informed that OP can only lock the thread, and in either case one of the OP's took the initiative to inform me that he did not delete it and asked me if I knew why it had been deleted.

Would it be possible to notify the subscribers to a thread..
when/if a thread is moved.. or deleted ?

I can confirm. I also posted in that NSA thread in Off Topic and those posts are gone from my post history, as is the thread.

I don't see why that thread would be deleted.

The thread I posted was definitely deleted "5 facts about the NSA surveillance" , which is fine, I understand the rationale. However, the police state for which America is turning into needs to be spoken about. If this isn't the place for discussion, that is out of my control; I am merely a guest traveler. I just want like minded individuals to be cognizant of the trajectory of the United States.

I agree, if the administration prefers we do not talk about the NSA here I don't mind, I just want to know if that is official so I can avoid spending more time posting in  threads that are destined to be deleted. I would also humbly suggest that maybe a sticky or something be made on the topic, so people know about it, rather than keep finding their posts and threads deleted and left wondering why. I suppose it does seem like the common theme in the deleted threads so far is the NSA, although in the case of the anonymized telephone thread the NSA was not mentioned in particular.

I can also confirm these threads were deleted (along with a few from 4 or 5 days ago) as I posted in them as well and they have been removed from my post history.

THANK YOU EVERBODY.  :D
I posted about this the other day and of course it went 'unnoticed.'

This whole thing concerning 'Casey Jones' + these NSA/security posts being deleted is starting to reek of shit.
Someone here knows something more than they're letting off.

If they are actually being deleted, then imho there is probably a good reason for it. I don't think we should view it as censorship per se if it is happening, but since this information is accessible by anyone, maybe some of it should be kept at least a little bit under wraps?

I mean, I don't really view it as censorship either since they own the server. But an explanation would be appreciated. It doesn't look like DPR even knew about it. And obviously a lot of people were wondering what was going on, so maybe it is better if they just state their position publicly rather than play whack a mole with threads.

I don't think we really have anything to be paranoid about. I mean, it isn't like the entire internet isn't talking about the NSA scandal, so it isn't like they would have any reason to try and censor it being discussed here. That is the part that has me confused, I really can't think of any reason why the threads would be deleted. We have even had threads on phone encryption in the past (albeit not anonymity), so it seems really strange that a new thread on phone encryption and anonymity would be deleted.

But that's the thing. Everything we say about the NSA is public information. Nobody here is giving away secrets.

My sentiments exactly. I don't care that it's being deleted either. They could make an arbitrary list of stuff we can't talk about, but I'd like to know what's on the list so I don't waste my time writing posts that get deleted.

Subbing.  Interested to know this as well.  I have seen a lot more threads getting moved lately but nothing I have posted in has been deleted.  Nonetheless this is something that should be explained with all of the people chiming in that it is happening to them.

Clearly, SR and its forum are one big NSA honeypot and they don't like the discussions of encryption getting close enough to discover the truth!

This happens more than people notice, or check up on, I think.

I watch the forums relatively closely.  Anything since early this year (1-2/2013) that has had anything remotely...direct? (Not sure the word here) gets removed pretty quickly.  This includes specific busts, certain encryption info, recently the NSA stuff, etc.  Also, just about none of it has anything against forum rules, or identifies anyone.

I'm not exactly a tinfoil hat person, but through various posts on here, other forums, and even reddit, one can start getting the feeling that something else is going on behind the scenes.
Title: Re: Why are so many threads being deleted without explanation?

I follow the forums pretty closely as well, and until about a week ago I hadn't really seen anything get deleted other than spam, a very few controversial threads, and threads that should obviously have been deleted. However, over the past week or so, it seems like the threads I have been posting in are getting deleted within a few hours to a day tops. The only common theme I have noticed is that they all have had to do with the NSA, other than the one on phone encryption and anonymity, which only had to do with the NSA in an abstract and never explicitly mentioned way. Given that the recently deleted posts were not spam, that they were not at all controversial, and that they actually had some good info and debate going on in them, I don't see that they should have obviously been deleted, and it just leaves me hoping for clarification of the matter. I had a few dozen fairly large posts in all of the threads combined, and if I know that there is some 'flag' that is getting these threads deleted, I will stop putting the effort forth to post in them. For now I can only speculate that they were deleted accidentally, perhaps by a mod trying to move them, or dropped by a software bug, or perhaps were deleted because they related to the NSA for some reason?

Actually now that you point it out I was posting in that encryption thread that you gave a good rundown on quantum computing's potential effect on encryption cracking as recently as earlier today and now it has vanished so some of my posts have been deleted as well.

Hadn't noticed that one was gone yet. That brings the total of confirmed deleted threads that I am aware of to 5: 3 on the NSA , 1 on phone encryption/anonymity and 1 on quantum encryption.

Alright kids, daddy got his tin foil hat and he came to fucking play.

This is clear cut as fuck, I can't believe none of you retard savants see this shit. Plain as fuckin' day.

This is obviously a case of the NSA super (quantum and beyond) computers from the future coming back to delete posts that 'it' deems may have a destructive effect on 'it's' reality in the future state.

I, Kenny 'The Fuck' Powders, fully believe this to be true.

DPR, and thus SR, is cleary an agent (computer/alien/hybrid?) from the future sent to help corral the deviants/potential troublemakers into an electronic web that is easily trapped, mapped and captured... so these inter-dimensional beasts can ravage our holographic souls.. for whatever reason.

It shocks the fuck out of me, blows my goddamn fucking mind.... the amount of people that believe 'signals & communication intelligence' is limited to the present time. The NSA of the future CLEARLY has a program implemented and is using it to 'tap' the past. DUH.

As mentioned, one of the threads was about secure phone communication. Someone mentioned running I2P on a phone, I linked to the Android APK for that, a few minutes later the thread was gone.

That one is perplexing, but the common element in the others seems to be the NSA.

In one respect that is quite comforting, I was looking for that thread yesterday and assumed that either the capricious gods of the search function were punishing me for cursing them so often or my mind was starting to unravel. Whatever the reason for these threads disappearing, its unfortunate, there was some really good information in that quantum encryption thread I hadn't gotten around to properly absorbing yet. I really don't want to have to start saving all the good info off here on the off-chance the thread crosses an invisible, intangible line and gets deleted.

Trust me everyone, you'd rather not know.  This isn't the first time things have been deleted without explanation.  Is there a good reason for it?  No one can make that decision due to the fact that there is never a reason given.

I don't believe we'll get a solid answer on this.  And if we do it'll be something about 'security issues'.

Ah, in that case I think we are talking about different threads! I kept thinking I had found the one I was looking for when I found that one, but the one I was referring to was one specifically about the resistance of encryption to quantum computing with kmfkewm posting a lot of info about the strength of asymmetric and symmetric encryption against quantum computers.

Actually I appear to suffering from the same affliction as you! I went looking again just now and I have found it.  Panic over! or not as the case may be.

The implication of your statement is that there are no logs kept, and there's therefore no way to discover abuses of power or even just simple mistakes.  Either that or you're so busy that you can't stop to check who deleted the threads and shoot them a brief email asking for their reasoning.

Neither of these are impossible... but frankly, I don't buy either of them. So the only other logical explanations I personally see are that someone has altered the logs (oh dear, that can't be good...), or you have no intention of ever disclosing any further information regarding the matter.

Would you like to comment on my assessment, or shall it too go without any real response?

My understanding is that there is a trash bin where they can see deleted threads, but there's no indication of who deleted them.

Still, unless it gets cleaned out often, they should be able to see the deleted threads, and we've given enough information about them -- NSA in the title, mention quantum computing and I2P -- that they should be able to find them and discover the OP, which is what Libertas wants.

I could put up an SMF forum for us to play around with and find out exactly how that aspect works. ;)

Having dealt with an SMF forum personally, I can tell you that you're exactly right, astor.  And I would doubt that the bin is cleaned regularly, so deleted threads can be found very easily - and restored.

^Yes, that. I'm incredibly busy on the main site at the moment; I won't be able to spend time looking into this until I can free up some of my time. I have a feeling though that OP's have been deleting their threads. Seeing as I don't have the time right now, would you guys be so kind as to check that hypothesis by starting a test thread, throwing up a few posts from different members and having the OP see if they can delete the thread despite there being responses posted?

http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=178366.new#new

Oh but, it doesn't work of course. Since it got deleted. OP of that thread was  Jasper800 and the thread was titled "Vendor Review: DealerofDrugs (Scam/Dishonest)"

The username Jasper800 also doesn't exist anymore. I think he wanted his account deleted because he doesn't want any ties to this place anymore after what DealerOfDrugs put him through.

LIBERTAS I got the answer.

So I went back to the Locked Thread, and I went to the bottom....
Clicked...remove topic.
and its gone.

I WAS ABLE to remove the Locked Thread.

So the Libertas Hypothesis does work!

So it could be OP's deleting the thread.

Bottom Left is where I found the button.

But if you try to remove first post, then that is not allowed, and only mod can.

Lol okay then.

When this was first brought up I checked the recycle bin, though I didn't have the time to examine things thoroughly nor PM many users. What I found suggested that the thread starters did indeed delete their threads, hence my hypothesis outlined above which was proven to be sound by 'ecstacydude'. We have eliminated the possibility of a moderator or other administrator deleting them due to the timestamps on the posts and the 'Last Active' timestamp of the moderators / admins which I recorded when this was first brought up.

You're reading into this with the mind of a conspiracy theorist, and I can see why some people had that mindset given the nature of the discussion in the threads in question. The OPs reasons for deleting the threads are their own, and we are not going to go around asking people why they are deleting certain posts / threads that they've started for three reasons: a) they have the right to remove their posts if they see fit to do so, b) we are not the Stasi, and c) we would not have the time do so if we were the Stasi!!

Why they deleted the threads, I have no idea. Perhaps they did it to spark just this kind of discussion and encourage a sense of distrust, perhaps not. Nobody knows but them.

My hypothesis was proven to be sound by another forum member. Any other member is free to test that hypothesis by creating a thread in the Off topic section for that purpose and attempting to remove it using the 'Remove Topic' button.

Apart from being too busy to do so, I did not want to test it myself due to concerns raised in this thread that administrators were deleting threads. It would be somewhat reminiscent of a Banana Republic if the people being accused of things were to be the ones to investigate themselves and declare their hypotheses sound based on their own findings, so I thought it better to be proven by somebody that was already contributing to the discussion at hand - I'm sure you can see the logic in that.

When you're quite done 'herping' and 'derping', would you like to propose a course of action that can be taken in order to address your concerns?

The person that posted the [New Leak- NSA data can be used against Americans for ordinary criminal activity] thread which they then deleted hasn't logged into their account for 4 days, and has deleted all of their posts bar their "spam to 50" posts, along with two they seem to have missed in the [NSA-proof encryption exists. Why doesn’t anyone use it?] and [U.S. intelligence mining data from nine U.S. Internet companies in broad secret] threads. I presume they removed them with intent of covering up what they were talking about, but it is not my place - nor anybody's - to demand a reason for that should they log back in at any stage.

Just because the 'last active' on known admins/mods timestamps don't match up does not necessarily prove that an admin/mod didn't delete them.  Just saying.

Also, what is so wrong about approaching anything and everything with the mind of a conspiracy theorist?  Tinfoil hats aside, I think paranoia is a trait we should all have a little of.  Trusting those in authority too much is how we all end up losing what little freedoms we have left.

Yes, it does. Any action that any member takes on the site causes their 'Last Active' time to update. As the administrator's and moderator's 'Last Active' time didn't update during or after the time period that the thread was delete, it means that no other administrator or moderator deleted the thread. Your argument is unsound and invalid. Just saying.

I partially agree with the second part of your statement. Whilst approaching anything and everything with the mind of a conspiracy theorist is perhaps a tad over the top, "trusting those in authority too much" is certainly something I would encourage people not to get lackadaisical about. It is completely right for a community to question those in authority if / when they see something that they perceive to be wrong, and is in fact something I believe very strongly in doing. Government oppression is allowed to occur because people do not ask enough questions nor adequately demand answers from their governments.

That being said, I formed a hypothesis on what happened based on the facts available to me and asked others to test that hypothesis for the reasons outlined in a previous post in this thread. That hypothesis being independently verified - along with the timestamps that were available - produced proof that no administrator nor moderator deleted any threads. Do you really think that we have that kind of oppressive censor-centric view here?!
The missing threads were deleted by their OPs. There is thankfully nothing more to it than that.

Because DPR is the new Obama. Nothing but bs rhetoric from a despot who allows childish powertripping mods to patrol and control these forums like they are working for the NSA.

I created a thread on this issue in January: http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=111042.msg766603#msg766603

72 replies and only 2 people agreed with me, so really you can't complain about the mods censoring threads as it is quite clear that the majority on these forums are in favor of censorship or are too chicken shit to voice protest, in which case you don't deserve to speak freely anyway.

If you are looking for a friendly place to converse freely on a range of unjustly taboo topics without the threat of censorship, this place ain't it, deal with it slaves.

We cannot and should not tell DPR what to do with his property (these forums).  All I really care about is that the basic freedoms remain intact and that these forums are not portrayed as something they are not, i.e. a place where we are all free from censorship.

I agree that the forums in their entirety are under the control of Silk Road and/or those affiliated with DPR.  That's pretty obvious, but personally I feel that they belong as much to us as they do to DPR: without either one, they wouldn't continue to exist.  Besides, we sure as Hell use them more than he does.

... but this is really neither here nor there, is it.  Never mind I suppose.

Here is a link to a thread which was deleted.... it was Jasper letting people know that DealerOfDrugs is a scamming vendor who calls the cops on his clients. Here ya go, link:

http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=178366.new#new

Oh but, it doesn't work of course. Since it got deleted. OP of that thread was  Jasper800 and the thread was titled "Vendor Review: DealerofDrugs (Scam/Dishonest)"

The username Jasper800 also doesn't exist anymore. I think he wanted his account deleted because he doesn't want any ties to this place anymore after what DealerOfDrugs put him through.

He probably deleted that one himself...

So OPs can delete their own threads even after posts have been made within them?
Wow, you kind of look like a dick now, huh? Jasper did that on his own free will because he felt the issue was resolved. People like you, ignorant ones, disgust me. You still pissed about not getting that free sample, huh?

Self entitlement is a issue that results from bad parenting. My guess, from reading over your history, is you lay on your ass all day smoking pot, posting on SR, all while mommy and daddy pays your bills. Mind you, you do this all while telling hard working vendors how they are fucking up or not up to your standards. For more clarification look up "man-child."

God damn kids. Get off my lawn.

I'll be looking into the issue when I have some free time, and I will get to the bottom of it.

Libertas

Have we reached the bottom of it?     ;o)

Not unless the OP's of the threads in question guillotine themselves.

Perhaps totally unrelated, but...

When I was on the forums a few days ago, my post count was exactly 450. Today I log on and it's 430. And I did not post anything on the recently deleted NSA threads.

Not wanting to muddy the apparently now cleared waters, but is a little weird...

someone may have deleted a thread that you posted in.

That seems to be the logical explanation - but I just don't post that much in other people's threads, and certainly not 20 posts in one thread. So it would have required a whole number of threads where I made a couple of posts to all be deleted in the same week. Possible of course, but seems somewhat low probability....

THE GREAT 'SPIRACY CUNTINUES  >:(

Really everybody? FUCKING REALLY?!?! We're going to accept the bullshit Libertas just said as an appropriate explanation? How about motherfuckin' NO. Case continues.

kmf and I discussed this issue privately before he created this thread. We noticed it because we both posted in several of the deleted threads. Neither of us has posted in this thread in several pages, so it seems we're both over it. I'm definitely over it. I haven't seen any more threads disappear, so the issue is resolved as far as I'm concerned. There's no reason to keep conspiracy theories alive here.

Hey Libertas,

I've just now noticed that my Newbie sub-forum thread is not there anymore. It used to be at http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=108363.0 and was called "BlueGiraffe GHB Everything Thread".

I've looked for it via the link and via the search function (multiple times) and it has definitely been deleted - I get this message: "An Error Has Occurred! The topic or board you are looking for appears to be either missing or off limits to you.".

This then explains why my post count dropped by 20 posts since last week (and that sounds about right for the number of posts I probably made on this thread). And I most certainly did not delete my own thread.

So here is a very clear and direct example. Perhaps the previous issues were explained and resolved, but this one has not been. Please could you address as a matter of urgency.

That topic (started by you) was indeed deleted, and I offer you my sincerest apologies for that - it was mistakenly deleted when cleaning up the 'infowars' spam as there was an 'infowars' post in it. I have now removed the 'infowars' post and restored the thread.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Thank you most kindly for restoring the thread...

If there is ever a mistake please do pull up a mod or admin on it. I will absolutely not have the Silk Road forums a place where people are afraid to speak their minds.

He had three cops at my door. No joke. Said karma is coming your way... said he had my name and address. Ten minutes later three cops, three different patrol cars, came to my door about a "domestic dispute with sounds of guns fired." I had a pinch hitter, that I stupidly left in plain site, out and luckily they didn't arrest me. So far, this has been an awful awful day because frankly DOD won. I didn't try and sway him out of "3.5 grams of MDMA to settle it" I don't even know what 3.5 G of MDMA breaks down to ya know... I know what an 8th of pot is but for something like that????? and I'm just not that type of guy... anyway... he won the debate. He kept PMing me threatening me about removing the thread...cops came to my door, I was nearly arrested, I removed the thread. I am no longer going to use the road. I am done with this otherwise amazing community because of one person. Be careful.

Honestly looking out,
