Title: MtGox
Post by: P2P on May 16, 2013, 10:25 pm
So am I not able to buy/sell btc on MtGox through tor? I am trying and it seems as though nothing is happening, likely because JS is not enabled. I remember being able to buy/sell just recently though, so I don't know what's going on. Can someone steer me in the right direction as far as using my MtGox account through Tor?

I havent used mtgox myself (there always seems to be easier alternatives for where i live)
but as far as i understand they dont allow you to conduct your business through tor to prevent illicit activity  ::)
don't quote me on it but i think they have blacklisted people who have tried in the past

If you access your Mt.Gox account using Tor they will flag you for verification meaning that you won't be able to withdraw either your money or your Bitcoin until you satisfy their AML / KYC requirements; basically verifying your identity.

The whole point of BTC is anonymity. The whole point of Tor is anonymity. Why would it be surprising someone using BTC would be using tor as well?

Plenty of felons, I'm sure, use Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome. So what?

And what alternatives? Mtgox is it. It's what we base all our prices off of. I just want to do some perfectly legal buying and selling. Playing the market, whatever you want to call it. I'm just not going to do that, because if I do, I may as well go down to the office of my ISP and hold a sign over my head saying, "investigate this guy!"

Hey I didn't make the Mt.Gox rules..! ??? It's to prevent 'criminality' I suppose, which is ironic considering how the US government stepped in because by not registering as a money-transmitting service, they were themselves engaging in 'criminality'.

Bitstamp is fully accessible over Tor, so that's one option.

i use https://bitbargain.co.uk/, it can be expensive depending on who you deal with, but it is always a seamless transaction (maybe only if you're in the UK though)

as for the way mtgox conducts their shit, its quite deplorable but you have to respect their way of doing things as it is their business and they should have absolute control over their business. If you don't like it there are plenty of other businesses you can conduct your business through (the foundations of a free market which i hope we are all striving for).  :)

If you want to avoid being flagged for tor then you have to use tor->VPN.

And now this private company has my money tied up (basically stealing). Oh well. And I don't think I've been flagged. I didn't get any notification as such.

I read another thread just like this one where another guy got his account frozen for using Tor.

That's it. It's settled. Mt. Gox is a joke!

Sorry for going off topic for a second, but I would like to suggest some protocols for thread naming. MtGox makes it harder to distinguish from the many other threads about MtGox, as, for example, "I can't seem to access MtGox through Tor," or MtGox and Tor," anything to explain the thread better. No offense to the OP, just making what I think would be a helpful suggestion.

Cheers
