Title: wow...awful lot of "morality" around here
Post by: LibertarianLawyer on May 12, 2013, 02:49 am
I posted a general topic about escrow; not SR specific. I am new around here and have explored some other vendor sites where the escrow/dispute resolution processes seem to be imperfect at best with a lot of complaints. Just spitballing the idea of a service that would perhaps arbitrate/mediate disputes with complete anonymity and without the need for product specifics. And of course, any lawyer contemplating this would need to remain anonymous as well.

I guess the mods hold us to a different standard.

I think the mods are just tired of dealing with scamming.

Obviously trust is an important part of any party that would hold the escrow funds, how would we know you wouldn't run off with the funds in escrow?

What would your service provide that SR does not already provide?

It probably wouldn't be necessary here from what I've heard. I have read threads on other boards that have similar "product lines" where the escrow/dispute resolution decisions appear (at least from many party's standpoints) as arbitrary. Like I said, just spitballing.

I locked your thread because:

A) Sales are not permitted without a vendor account, and all sales must go through the Silk Road ordering system, thus automatically going through escrow.

B) Sales are not permitted on the forums, full stop. In order to have a need of making use of an external escrow service, the member interested would have to be making a trade outside of the Silk Road ordering system which is not permitted (refer to point A).

C) As you would, by your own admission, be remaining anonymous, there would nothing preventing you from a 'cut and run' should you amass enough Bitcoin in this "escrow" account.

D) Stating that it would be "run by a couple of American lawyers with decades of experience in both civil and criminal law (on the state and federal level) including mediating and/or arbitrating disputes that might arise" was, in my opinion, done in order to add an air of legitimacy and encourage trust in what would most likely turn into a scam, presuming that it is not one from the get-go. If you would be remaining anonymous then it would be pointless to state that as it is entirely unverifiable.

It is not a question of "morals", it is a question of whether or not this would be a legitimate undertaking and whether it is needed. Due to how it would be set up, I formed the opinion that it would be neither.

If you wish to offer an escrow service, feel free to go to bitcointalk.org and present the idea there. I can guarantee, however, that you will be laughed off the forum before your second post on the matter. We - the moderators - are here to protect this community, and that is what I am doing here.

Hey, I'm not planning on firing up a business any time soon, if ever. Like I said, I'm just throwing it out there. While this is the "wild wild West" now, it won't stay that way. I remember getting on the "internet' for the first time in late '94; it was crude, disorganized, and kind of strange. Terms like "e-commerce" were virtually unheard of, and few companies had websites. I think a lot of people viewed it as a curiosity that wouldn't last.

With so much government intrusion already in place, and more coming soon with no end in sight, I see more legitimate business migrating this way. Those with the foresight to see ahead will do well.

You are just throwing it out there, that's fine. I'm simply addressing the issues with what you proposed and how those issues relate to Silk Road and this community.
