Title: Closing an Account
Post by: P2P on May 08, 2013, 11:11 pm
As far as I know, this is not a current feature on the site. How is it done?

Seems sort of foolish, given the nature of the site, that one can't erase any trace of his/her being here. Even if you are anonymous, I see no reason to not be able to delete your account and free up some server space.

Hi P2P,

It cannot currently be done. When an account is not logged into for 6 months or more it is archived.

Can you please expand on what "archived" means? In other words, does it mean it can be queried on the search engine and found and/or linked to? Maybe this is more complicated than I know (I don't have a degree in computer security), but I'm not sure why, if it CAN be done, that it wouldn't be done. I imagine for any vendor this would be an essential feature to delete any potential evidence of any sort of activity on the site, especially given that every sale and amount sold is right there on their profile as public record.

By the way, Libertas, how long have you been a mod?

Are you asking about accounts on the main SR site itself, or forum accounts?

I'm not entirely sure but I'll attempt to find out for you.

It's not really necessary for a vendor to be able to delete their accounts or evidence of their activity; the police would need their password to prove that they own the account, and no vendor is going to incriminate themselves in that way. Most vendors are also employing security measures such as hidden encrypted volumes etc. thus negating the need for things to be deleted.

If a vendor were able to delete their accounts on a whim, what would stop them from switching to FE then scamming and suddenly deleting their account, disappearing without a trace? :-\

I have been a Mod since May 03, 2013, 12:32 am, but have been a member since late 2011.

Yep, that's why I was asking ... on the forums, you can go through and delete your posts one by one and then delete your account ... you'd have left no record other than in any posts where you've been quoted.  On the main site though, the message history, account history, etc. all needs to be kept in case of possible issues.  Also, as Libertas noted, if people could simply delete their SR accounts, the amount of scamming would increase exponentially!
