Newbie discussion / Re: Time for bitcoin deposit to go through?
« on: May 14, 2013, 06:25 am »
When the confirmations are done, its displayed.

This changes based upon the amount transferred, larger amounts require more validations to be performed.

The above is incorrect - larger amounts do not require more confirmations than smaller amounts. Regarding the length of time a Bitcoin deposit generally takes, please see the SR Wiki here:

Quote
Why isn't my deposit showing up in my account?

It can take up to 6 hours for a deposit to be confirmed on the blockchain, processed, and credited to your Silk Road account. If your deposit still hasn't shown up, first check that it is showing up on the blockchain by searching for your deposit address on a site like blockchain.info. If your transfer doesn't appear here, then it was never sent and you need to find out why from the person or organization who initiated the transfer. If the transfer does appear, then there could be a problem on our end and you should contact us.

Silk Road discussion / Re: A broken feedback system.
« on: May 14, 2013, 05:31 am »
I hope nobody thinks that I'm trying to trash vendors as a whole. That was not my intention. I have dealt with a couple of vendors on here that absolutely deserve 5/5 in all categories and then some. I believe in an uncensored system as well. I think that I may have had the wrong idea about the vendor blacklist. I was thinking it was a system-implemented feature where any vendor could add a user and therefore effectively prevent that user from ordering from anyone else rather than just a special thread in the vendors-only section of the forum.

Regardless, I still believe what I originally said about the feedback scores not being entirely honest, and I for one will strive to leave a score which is 100% representative of the actual transaction as a whole. I guess I can only do my part and hope that everyone else does the same. I'm still a n00b here at SR compared to many, but I'm learning more each day.

It didn't come across that way at all, tabun. :) If you have an issue or a gripe with something or someone, you're definitely right in bringing it to the forum for discussion!

I've been here since very close to the beginning, and I'M learning more each day too. We can never stop learning!! Best of luck with your travels on the Road! :)

Not true I actual emailed a vendor to see if I could do it yesterday lol I know I'm a noob but I am currently not on sr yet and will be getting tor and bitcoins this week. It can't hurt to ask. The vendor very politely told me he only accept bitcoins and I plan to buy from him once I get my account set up and buy some coins.

Hi Theory,

Please read the following, as it's important to have as much knowledge as possible before starting out on your (hopefully long and successful!!) Silk Road journey:

Is there a way to unsubscribe from a particular thread without going thru it and deleting all your posts? For example, I posted in the SPAM HERE TO GET 50 thread and every time I click on See new replies to your posts, it comes up. There's no way I'm going thru THAT thread to find my posts lol!

Hi tabun,

Unfortunately due to limitations in the simplemachines forum (SMF) software, this is currently impossible. However, you can go to your profile, click on "show posts", go to the last page and delete them all from there. Try right-clicking on the "remove" button and 'open in a new tab' for each one so as you won't have to wait an age for the page to reload every time! :)

« on: May 14, 2013, 05:19 am »
Many vendors want new buyers to fe. I haven't bought anything off the road should I avoid these type of vendors?

You should avoid Finalising Early at all! There are plenty of reputable vendors that accept new buyers and do not require FE. Once you leave the protection of the escrow system, there is nothing that Silk Road can do to help in the event that something goes wrong. Do your research about vendors on the forums, ensure you learn how to use PGP, maybe send them a message or two inquiring about their 'new buyer policies' (if it's not already stated on their profile page), and when you feel comfortable enough go ahead and place an order. But do NOT leave the safety of the escrow system until you have your order in your hands and are 100% satisfied with it! :)

Part of the problem is the way the SR feedback system computes vendor feedback. With an "out of 100" feedback system anything less than 5 of 5 negatively affects the vendors rating.

A cumulative system like ebay or (horror) BMR would be fairer and more accurate, in my opinion.

I agree, there are definitely 'fairer' systems out there; however, everything is the way it is for a reason, and I fully trust DPR's decision on making the feedback system the way it is for the reasons that he/she saw fit to do so.

You are free to leave whatever feedback you wish, and you should honestly not feel forced into leaving something that does not reflect your experience. Vendors are completely free to talk amongst themselves - this is a free community, after all, and they are entitled to freedom of speech like the rest of us. If they wish to keep a 'Vendor's Blacklist' amongst themselves, they are free to do so. Buyers are also free to keep a 'Buyer Blacklist' listing all the vendors that partake in such activity if they wish, so it does work both ways.

If you feel so strongly about it, perhaps consider starting a thread in the Rumor mill forum listing the vendors that you have clear evidence for that do this? Freedom ensures fairness!

You make a good point. I was just looking at the feedback on multiple vendors and noticing a trend where the actual feedback comments didn't jive with the feedback score and wanted to know what everyone else thought about it.

As do you, don't get me wrong! Buyers should never feel forced into leaving a rating that is not representative of their experience, but attempting to enforce rules forbidding vendors from having their own policies would mean regulating the market - regulation kills competition and has ruined everything it has ever touched. Silk Road is an agorism based free-market marketplace, so such rules cannot and will not be considered. However, as I stated, freedom ensures fairness so buyers ARE able to keep their own list if they wish.

Regarding feedback scores, they are a little more complicated than what's immediately visible, but you can read more about how they're calculated here:

Word.  Lesson learned.  Thought I had this SR thing down.  Got impatient and had my coins drop in value that put me out of reach of NorCal420Hookup's qp's and had people hounding me so I made a rash, and terrible decision.  Never again.

Sorry to hear, redfunguy. We've all been guilty of bad business decisions at some stage in the past, if that's any small consolation. :-\ Hope you can get back on your feet soon!

I had an order of 50 with Liston and I never received, it's five more days until I can push the resolution button and I'm a small time seller who recently got 100 stolen from me; this is really hurting right now. I can't message Liston bc he has been banned and not responding to his emails except to ask for my address so he can tell me the expected delivery date (which now has me worried with everything I've been reading) but I doubt I'll be receiving anything since it has been way past his estimated delivery time. Is there anything I can do? The funds should still be in escrow. Email me at mydyingfaith@tormail.org. Any advice or guidance will be greatly appreciated because I feel cheated. I just put in an order with Bionik who I have had success with in the past but freeing up Liston's escrow would help greatly getting more orders out the sooner the better because the semester is over and I'm going to be fucked.

I'm afraid there's nothing that can be done in situations like this; you will have to wait for the 'resolution' button to become available and then request your 100% refund.

I believe the current feedback system, or the way we are coerced into using it, is flawed. Almost every vendor says that you MUST leave them a 5/5 feedback or "they will ban you from buying from them and add you to a 'Vendor's Blacklist'." I've even seen feedback that is 5/5 but the comment says, "I left 5/5 but it should really be a 2/5 or 3/5 because blah blah blah... There are a disproportionate amount of 5/5 ratings and I KNOW not all of these are deserved! If everyone left TRUE ratings and feedback, we could sort the truly excellent vendors from the trash, and possibly prevent situations where MANY people end up getting screwed by a vendor because a buyer looked at 3 pages of 5/5 ratings and trusted that vendor when many of those ratings were not accurate. If there is indeed a vendor's blacklist that is comprised of buyers that leave less than a 5/5 score, I think that's hurting the entire SR community as a whole.
Now I'm not pointing the finger at anyone in particular, because I too am guilty of leaving a 5/5 when it should have been a 4/5 at most.

Take this for what it's worth whether you agree with it or not, but I CAN'T be the only buyer that thinks like this.

You are free to leave whatever feedback you wish, and you should honestly not feel forced into leaving something that does not reflect your experience. Gonna lock this down for the security threat it poses to any one who may be stupid enough to take you up on your offer.

Keep in mind, however, that a Silk Road vendor account is essentially free as the $500 bond is refundable if/when you meet the terms of it. However, you can find the addresses of at least 2 other .onion based marketplaces in the forums if you are interested in selling your products elsewhere.

Thanks you two, that helps clarify some things.  Is his account on the forums suspended?  I would think he would be on here assuring people their packages are coming if those packages were actually coming and he still had an account.  None of this looks good.  I suppose since his account was shut down that is a tad better than if he shut it down himself and bolted.  I'm really hoping I have a package waiting for me tomorrow...    :-\

No, the Silk Road forums are a free community and that kind of censorship does not take place here. I just want to reiterate in case my previous post gave anybody any sort of false hope - this guy is 99.9999% NOT coming back. It is quite evident simply from looking at various forum posts and his feedback before his account was demoted that he has been scamming people. Please don't get your hopes up about packages arriving - they're most likely NOT coming. :(
