Hi folks,

Please be aware of the following when using BTC exchangers on Silk Road:

Quote
Please note that, while there are many vendors offering to sell Bitcoins directly from this site, we are not set up to facilitate this and it is very easy to get scammed this way. Until we are set up for it, we recommend you get Bitcoins from a third-party exchange. If you do get scammed we will have no way to help you.

I need help with a bitcoin transaction from a Silk Road vendor.

Unfortunately we do not offer support for these kinds of transactions because we cannot hold your payment in escrow. If there is an issue, you'll have to work it out directly with your vendor.

Newbie discussion / Re: Do buyers need to make a profile?
« on: May 15, 2013, 06:46 am »
So maybe this is a dumb question, but do buyers need to make any kind of profile?  Or are your stats all a seller needs to see about you?

Hi strangelights,

The only way you can get a 'profile' of any sort over on the main site is if you have purchased a vendor account; echoing the other answers, no, creating an account, depositing some Bitcoin and purchasing your item of choice is the way to go. :)

Please read the Buyer's Guide on the SR Wiki here:

Are you tired of little privacy that comes with regular email or even tormail? Are you tired of tormail not working right or there servers being down? Do you want a decentralized, encrypted way of communicating with others? Do you want something that has even more privacy than PGP. Then look no further than BitMessage.

https://bitmessage.org/wiki/Main_Page

https://bitmessage.org/bitmessage.pdf

How does Bitmessage compare to other messaging methods
https://bitmessage.org/wiki/FAQ#How_does_Bitmessage_compare_to_other_messaging_methods

Only one drawback that I found. You have two days to check your bitmessages after someone sends you the message.

I am surprised SR is not booming with members that are switching to this new system. We all need to adapt and get with what is new and leave the past for our own good.

IDK too much about bitmessage so don't ask me all kinds of questions. Check out the links.

Peace.

Dump PGP?! Are you seriously trying to recommend that people stop using PGP in favour of BitMessage?! What a ludicrous suggestion! You then go on to admit you don't even "know too much about bitmessage".  ???

I would STRONGLY advise all members to stick with PGP. BitMessage needs to be fully tested and fully examined before its use is recommended.

I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR SOMEBODY RIPPING OFF A PACKAGE.IF I SENT EMPTY PACKAGES I WOULDNT BE SELLING FOR VERY LONG.

((IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG)), I WILL DO WHAT I CAN TO MAKE IT RIGHT UNLESS YOU HAVE ALREADY GIVEN ME A BAD REVIEW.IN THAT CASE OUR BUSINESS WILL BE DONE.SO PLEASE CONTACT ME WITH ANY DISPUTES BEFORE POSTING A REVIEW."

directly from his profile i dont understand why ppl cant be honest vendors the world would be a better place if ppl werent so damn greedy. guess i should have been expecting an empty box. any suggestions? ive only been messaging the vendor hasnt gone into resolution or contacted support.  leaving the vendors name out so he hopefully doesnt see it and to not piss him off in hopes of getttin a good reslution...

As scout has stated, the only thing you can do in this situation is take it to resolution. An outline of the ordering process (including the resolution process) can be found on the SR Wiki here, along with answers to frequently asked questions about resolution:

Bug reports / Re: I can't verify the fucking captcha!!
« on: May 15, 2013, 06:22 am »
Liberatas, I've been having this problem ever since I joined at the end of March - frustrating thing was, I couldn't even get in to this forum to say I was having a problem...because of the captcha problem!

When I go to 'Preferences' there is no option called 'uncheck enable javascript', not under settings or anywhere, so that option isn't available, I don't know why that is (I use PC), or maybe it's somewhere else I haven't yet found.

I seem to have solved the problem by using Internet Explorer browser, tho' I swear it wasn't working on that a few weeks ago...it definitely still isn't working on Firefox or Tor.

So I don't know what the problem was but I'm able to post up now.

p.s. I get the three numbers problem too, but simply refresh and it brings up four letters and three numbers again.

Z

Sorry ZDVal, the option should be available under Options -> options -> content -> enable JavaScript.
You say you solved the problem by using Internet Explorer?? Are you accessing the site using the onion.to proxy?? If so, stop immediately. The people that run onion.to have access to your IP address, and have the ability to log everything you're doing, including any keys that you press.

I would strongly advise you to ensure you're using the latest update of the Tor Browser Bundle, then use that (and always that) to log in to Silk Road and the forums and change your passwords.

Regarding the three-digit captcha, this occurred as a result of site hardening measures. All you can do is keep refreshing until you get a full length captcha and you will be able to log in when you see that.

Customer support / Re: Address on silkroad
« on: May 15, 2013, 06:12 am »
I can't say with 100% certainty, but I do believe the address is no longer accessible to anyone once the vendor marks the order in transit.  If I understand things correctly, it's encrypted on the server (not the same thing as encrypting your address though) so there's no real risk of it being intercepted when you submit the order .... but I would definitely encourage you to encrypt your address (and any other sensitive information) BEFORE you send the order.  That way, even if SR were compromised or your vendor's account were compromised, your information would remain safe / un-exposed.

^This, 100,000,000%!!!

...should I cancel the order and resubmit using pgp for my security ? As I still have the option to cancel ?

Regarding this, the option to cancel only becomes available after 4 days - you will not be able to click it until 'cancel' turns into a clickable link. Just make sure you PGP encrypt your details in future.

Guys any1 hve the url cant acces the main site? :S
Cheers

The URL will remain silkroadvb5piz3r.onion until DPR states otherwise in a signed, verified message.

Customer support / Re: When does escrow start?
« on: May 15, 2013, 06:06 am »
Yup, scout's correct, the order is hedged the moment it is placed. From the Buyer's Guide:

http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/wiki/index.php?title=Buyer%27s_Guide#Escrow_hedge

Quote
When checking out, you will see which orders will be hedged and which won't. After the order is placed, your escrow balance will reflect the dollar value of your hedged orders and the Bitcoin value of your unhedged orders. All hedged orders are hedged as soon as the order is placed. So when getting a refund for hedged items, don't be surprised if the number of Bitcoins you get back is not the same as the amount you paid.

This is a bit ridiculous, HeatFireFlame; your thread title is incredibly misleading as you have no idea what muskabuzz is like as a vendor, admitting as much yourself in other threads, and indeed stating that this particular thread is not even about a purchase.

I think it would be prudent to edit the title to reflect the facts of the situation lest you begin to develop a bad reputation on the forums yourself. :-\

I understand where you're coming from in your post above, but you are essentially whinging about not receiving free bud. This has nothing to do with muskabuzz as a vendor. Nothing at all.

All of this over something intended as a goodwill gesture to the community - an awful shame.

We are all the same IP. You would think they would have fixed this irritating bug by now.

Hi uniwiz,

As far as I'm aware it's not possible to fix that for the very reason that you mentioned - I'm not sure if it's solely a Tor issue or also a shortcoming in the SMF forum software but to the best of my knowledge it cannot currently be done.

Libertas

There is an option DPR has in the control panel to specify the maximum amount of searches per time interval, however as all connections will appear to be from 127.0.0.1 it cannot differentiate between users, only the IP which is a security feature built into the software. As searches take vastly greater resources than standard forum browsing activities, I imagine DPR has kept it in place to ensure the volume of searches does not overload the server. Just try the search 2-3 times and generally it should work, mine do usually by at least the 2nd attempt.

Thanks for the clarification, StExo! :)

is it not against silkroad terms?
thanks.

The buying and selling of vendor accounts is expressly prohibited. If an account is found to have been bought or sold from a source anywhere other than Silk Road itself, it will be shut down immediately.

Libertas

Really?  I've seen it done on the forum here and I've seen it done on other forums and places...

Yup, it's completely against the rules due to the possibility that a vendor could sell their account (along with all their feedback) to somebody who decides to take advantage of that feedback and pull a scam. We can't control what appears on other sites, but if somebody attempting to sell a vendor account appears here, please report them immediately.

Libertas

EDIT: I got that wrong - the rules on that have obviously changed since the beginning! Please see scout's post below!

1470
This is worrying it seems to be happening to a lot of vendors. Was it a pshing scam?

Yes, this vendor also fell victim to the phishing scam that was doing the rounds. It is nothing to worry about - Silk Road is completely secure; it is user error that is causing all of these issues.

Silk Road will NEVER ask you for your PIN, and any changes to the site URL will be stated and signed by DPR with his public PGP key, which should be saved by everyone from the link below:
