Hi i'm new here.
how can i avoid problems with pdf?How can i control them?

Hi Qual,

Welcome to the community. Please have a look through the Security forum for more information on securing yourself from possible malware etc. - the best advice I can give you is to open them inside a Virtual Machine. You can read more on Virtual Machines both here on the forums and with a search on Google.

Security / Re: former SR btc address forwarding to new address?
« on: June 05, 2013, 09:48 am »
I sent several days ago and have received nothing in my current wallet.  Is this normal?

No, it should have been received by now. If it hasn't arrived please contact SR Support and ask them to look into it - you can reach them by clicking 'support' in the bottom right corner of any page on the main site.

I know.

I was hoping someone might pick up on the fact that the poster is pushing this pdf download for newbies everywhere.

it has potential for a pretty big fuckup

terp

Indeed it does, but every member is responsible for their own security and for the actions they take here. If a member wishes to download a PDF with which it is possible that their system may be compromised, that is their own decision. If they are not aware that PDF's can compromise a system, that is their own fault. Ignorance is no excuse for being lax with security.

We are only as secure as we make ourselves.

Thanks for the support Libertas.

I did run a full scan with multiple methods on my system to reconfirm no keyloggers etc; very unlikely unless it was a custom job, which would be even less probable.

I've checked my addresses to see if there was any withdraw to them; no joy. Also - as I noted - there is no withdrawal address specified in the transaction log.

I'll contact support.

Just in case anyone is wondering, this is a scam. Please don't send this person your Bitcoin.

Libertas

It is funny that you need to say this.

It would be funnier if it there wasn't such a serious problem with people sending their Bitcoin to people like this! :-\

Newbie discussion / Re: The PIN field on the Shopping Cart page
« on: June 05, 2013, 09:14 am »
OK, got it.

Another dumb question then... do I simply enter my name and shipping address, enter my PIN and that automatically encrypts my name/address?

No, your details are not automatically encrypted - they're encrypted on the server so anyone that might have access to them won't be able to see them but they are not encrypted on the vendor's end; you will have to encrypt them using PGP, and guides for this are available all over the forum, particularly in the Newbie discussion and Security forums.

Libertas

Of course it's a good idea to encrypt your info, but out of curiosity: Has there been any cases of a vendor getting investigated, the police finding sales records,  and the customers actually getting charged with anything?  I've never heard of such a thing happening despite tons of vendors with zero encryption getting busted before SR.

Not as far as I'm aware, but perhaps that is because the people who could report it are either going through the court system and thought better than logging in to Silk Road and the forums or possibly they are in prison already. Then again, perhaps nothing happened to them - we just don't know.

Regardless, that is no reason to become complacent. It takes under 5 seconds to encrypt an address and copy & paste it into the address field when placing an order. Is 5 seconds really worth the less than desirable possibilities that can result from not spending that time using PGP?

Hello, my name is Herbert Hoffmann, I'm 42 years old and live in germany. 2 years ago i got depressed and thought of killing myself. I was self-employed in the financial sector for years and made very decent money by writing my own scripts for speculating. 2 years ago i lost nearly everything in my divorce. My children stopped contacting me and i lost my house and my cars. For a while i worked at grocery stores because i had no money left for speculating. I wasted almost all my free time on the internet and found bitcoin quite a while ago.
I invested about 200€, followed the market all day and started writing scripts again. Last month i was able to buy a house in the USA in the middle of nowhere ;) I can go fishing there and have enough money to live the rest of my days there, just relaxing in the nature. My plane is going friday.

There won't be any internet, and i'm not interested in it. I still have 2500btc laying around which i don't need anymore and can't liquidate till friday anyway.
So i wrote my last script: Every bitcoin that you send till thursday evening to the following adress will come back doubled thursday night: 1NcJwpT4cyNsJWWeXHkWLZzRQ43zCXtVYt

If more than 2500btc get send, everything over 2500 will just be returned. If less than 2500btc get send, please tell me where you wish me to donate the rest to.
I won't be online till Thursday and can't reply to this thread, moving to the USA takes a lot of preparation.

Thanks to all of you who helped making Bitcoin popular. You saved my life and have my eternal gratitude!
(You can see my topic promoted on bitcointalk.org so as reddit.com:-)

Best regards, Herbert

Noob here...

My question is: what is the PIN field for on the SHopping Cart page that appears just after the name / address field? I want to make a purchase for the first time on Silk Road but am unsure of what that field is about

Thanks

When you registered an account on Silk Road you would have been asked to create a passphrase and a PIN. The PIN that you created at that time is needed in order to make purchases or withdraw Bitcoin from your account.

How about their login credentials for their local department's website?  Gary's username is "Cochenour 508" and his password is "Deputy508" :)

Whilst this would need clarification from the administrators I believe that this would fall under the 'no personal information' policy. As I am unsure on this particular point, I will check and revisit this, redacting the information if needs-be.

Jack just make a damn pastebin if you want to DOX some cops. Anonymous does that shit all the time. I'll even read the fucker lol.

Links to pastebins that contain personal information on anyone will be edited in accordance with the 'no personal information' policy; they are treated the same as posting the personal information on the site itself. However, anything that contains information that is posted off site is not Silk Road's concern as long as a link to it is not posted on the forums.

Links to news stories that are in the public domain are not considered as revealing personal information - they are widley reported and the person contained in the news report is not being put at risk by having a link to a widely reported news story posted here.

Libertas

Thank you for the clarification Libertas!

You're welcome. However, posting personal details that are not included in the news report is not permitted, as you well know:

Thank you for your report, Jack N Hoff.

Links to news stories that are in the public domain are not considered as revealing personal information - they are widley reported and the person contained in the news report is not being put at risk by having a link to a widely reported news story posted here. A member of the forums, or a member of LE, however, would be put at significant risk where their safety and security is concerned if their information is posted here - I'm sure you can understand the difference between those two scenarios. However, if you have an issue with the forum policy on personal information, please feel free to take it up with the site adminstrators, Dread Pirate Roberts and inigo.

Libertas

Cool.  So I can start posting law enforcement officer's personal information as long as I include a news article?

You can of course post a link to a news article that is in the public domain, along with the quoted text if desired, as long as it is posted in the off topic section where it belongs.

Do me a favour and post in sonni, chemdog,,chemdogsunrise police1980 threads and tell them to get their arses over here & explain my accusations

make yourself useful please &  dont buy from them  >:(  they might threaten your address / details / family  some time ,  you got kids Libertas ?

Childish ? deadly serious.... mod.  >:(     go ask them to explain Here ....................plz

oh he,s got kids....  mod.

I am not asking anybody to do anything, joolz. That is not my responsibility, nor is this something that I - as a forum moderator - have any desire to get involved in. I have indeed "made myself useful" by telling you what you should do in order to get the situation resolved.

Whether or not I have children is none of your concern.

I'm started to notice several posts with personal information and the mods don't give a fuck about those.  I don't understand.  Some personal information is allowed, as long as it isn't a law enforcement officer?  Why are we protecting known law enforcement officer's personal information but we are allowed to post the personal information of celebrities and such??

As I posted in response to your report:

Thank you for your report, Jack N Hoff.

That should serve to clarify the issue, but if it does not then the administrators may be able to offer more information.
