Off topic / Things I did today
« on: March 22, 2012, 03:02 pm »
I woke up and did clothes. Then I did some bacon and eggs. Then I did drugs.

All of these sentences sound equally retarded.

Just a public service announcement.

Quote
to perform (an act, duty, role, etc.): Do nothing until you hear the bell.
to execute (a piece or amount of work): to do a hauling job.
to accomplish; finish; complete: He has already done his homework.
to put forth; exert: Do your best.
to be the cause of (good, harm, credit, etc.); bring about; effect.

Pretty sure drugs are not an act duty or role, although USING drugs is an act that you can do
pretty sure that drugs are not an amount of work
pretty sure that drugs are not something you accomplish, finish or complete (anyway does "I did sex" sound like a good way to say "I had sex"? I mean, it is something you can accomplish finish and complete.....)
pretty sure that drugs are not something you put forth or exert

I smoke(d) marijuana - acceptable
I use(d) marijuana - acceptable
I did marijuana - fail
I do marijuana - fail

I did (smoke) marijuana - acceptable
I do (smoke) marijuana - acceptable

when I hear people say that they did/do or have done marijuana I picture them dry humping a marijuana plant

Think about it, would you say you have done bacon simply because you have eaten it before? have you done cigarettes? Do you do cigarettes?

Even a lot of (but by no means all...)  LSD comes from organizations that are closer to bloods&crips than happy hippies. Not gonna give specific details though. Most mass produced drugs have a good chance of having their manufacture and initial distribution controlled by traditional drug trafficking organizations, and traditional DTOs tend to consist of violent people. You are going to be hard pressed to be involved with the drug trade without having mafia-esque gangs a few links away from you, unless you are buying stuff (like pot/shrooms) with much more distributed production. Almost all MDMA is made with chemicals supplied by Triads.

Of course this is entirely the governments fault. They create the market that allows this to happen, they fund all of these gangs and they fund the terrorists who profit from the drug trade. The gov and their friends profit, the gangs profit, everyone else gets fucked and innocent people get trapped in the cross fire.

Security / Re: ATA Secure Erase Command & TAILS
« on: March 20, 2012, 11:36 am »
1. Does the ATA secure erase command render all data on my HDD completely irrecoverable to LEO? I'm in no position to physically destroy the HDD and will need to reinstall Windows 7 on it later. So degaussing, incineration, or other means of physical destruction are out of the question.

2. Is any incriminating data at all recoverable from TAILS?

My C drive's encrypted and I boot from TAILS on a USB. Beforebooting from TAILS, I turn on my computer, press F2 to reach the screen to change the boot order, and then save the changes. I turn my computer offer, plug in my TAILS USB, turn my computer on, then start using TAILS.

Thanks for any help.

in short: yes, no

in long: As far as modern forensics are currently concerned, as long as nothing fucks up (I don't think it will but who knows)

There are places in NL that take samples of anything and eventually report back on substance and purity. I think they might even be government funded.

So the police searched your home, then told you to go to drug treatment?

Didn't get charged or sent to court? Hmmmmm.

 :-\

Bullshit.

Agreed. I know people in Australia who have been raided and ended up going to court ordered treatment and paying fines etc, but they of course had to go to court and be sentenced first. Moral of the story is that this story could indeed happen and has happened to other people, but probably didn't happen to the OP cuz that isn't how the injustice system works.

Peoples perception of the protections they have in the USA are much better than reality. Add in that LE frequently get away with breaking the law and it is pretty shitty situation for people to be in.

As far as encrypted containers go, just download and install Truecrypt standard 32bit x86 is what you want for tails. Then to launch it just type truecrypt in a terminal and hit enter. Then you can use the nice GUI which I imagine you will be able to figure out yourself how to create containers with :)

if you want a program that generates random passwords you will be glad to know that there is one built right into tails called md5sum ;)

use this command:

echo "ewiftireutufeyhteru7htreiuhtwemuhftslkdfnmkslgftmdjkltfngkjbdskfhjvngmxngmjfldrfskjndj" | md5sum

and it will print out a more condensed visually appealing string that has the entropy of your input string contained within it (up to 128 bits) and evenly distributed through out it. The more randomly you pound on the keyboard, the more random the resulting password will be.

If you use Linux for long enough you will question why you ever used Windows in the first place. But the transition period is hard, and ime it takes about a year or two of regular use before linux starts to be substantially less of a headache. (although linux distros are getting far more user friendly, so this period is probably a bit less now). Especially going from a fully featured OS like Windows to a live CD security oriented distro like Tails. Many people go back and forth between Windows and Linux before they feel comfortable enough to abandon Windows entirely. It is also a good idea to start with a nice user friendly Linux distro like Mint or Ubuntu, not stripped down security hardened live CD Debian, which you seem to expect to be a fully featured distro.

Linux really gives the user a lot more fine grained control over their machine. And it encourages learning about computer science in general. It is also perfect for running servers, desktop is kind of a secondary market for it (hell, if even, its on a ton of devices that are not typically seen as computers even though they are). Windows creates a rigidness that is just not there nearly as much with Linux. Rigidness can be good though, it means less chance to make mistakes and a more 'stream lined' and 'polished' feeling to the over all exerpience. But once you start learning how to use those fine grained controls and really taking advantage of Linux, you may very well find that Windows isn't comprehensible, it is simple and it encourages simplicity and not knowing about or being able to influence what goes on at a lower level. Plus Windows has trained your brain into being dependent on it, I find that you really need to approach Linux with a different mindset (an eagerness to learn and increase your skills, rather than to be entertained or get instant gratification) to get the most out of it. Approaching it expecting it to be Windows is going to lead you to being frustrated, it is you who need to change to get the most out of Linux not Linux that needs to change :P.

You are making things overly complicated though. Go to bookmarks -> show all bookmarks and use the import and back up functionality. Encrypt the back up and then when you want to load it decrypt it and import it. You don't need to bother installing anything, and installing things from a running instance of TAILS in kind of a pain in the ass.

I find that the easiest way to install things with linux is often from source code, although tracking down dependencies can be a pain in the ass. Normally you just will download and decompress the source code, then

cd /path/to/folder
./configure
make
make install

potentially giving ./configure some instructions if you need anything special done

if it needs some dependency that you don't have, you will get an error from ./configure letting you know and then you track what you need down, download it

cd /path/to/folder
./configure
make
make install

etc, until no dependencies are unmet and the original thing you wanted to install finishes make install with no errors. I think with tails you will first need to sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get install make .

There are some exceptions when it comes to the steps involved, but in general that is the framework.

It will probably be easier for you to use something like apt-get though, you can sudo apt-get install program
and if it is in the repositories the installation and dependencies will be automatically taken care of.

You can also install from a distro specific package like .deb for debian based distros, but one has to be made already.

I seem to remember a research paper showing that the majority of Tor exit traffic consists of legal adult pornography. In several countries with large Tor userbases all porn is illegal, so it is not really a big surprise.

Whaaat?!  O.K., even though it's adult porn and not child porn I gotta see this research paper.  Now I'm going to do some research of my own but I'd be so disappointed if this were true.  I'm a big believer in the goodness of Tor, free speech, and the ability to keep Big Brother in the dark.  Don't quite feel as passionately about porn, tho'

Porn is free speech. Countries make porn illegal and censor access to it, people use Tor to get around the censorship and obtain porn. That is free speech, that is keeping big brother in the dark and that is combating censorship. Of course Tor is also used for tons of other things. People use Tor to get around websites with geographic locks that block people from certain countries. Journalists are more and more starting to suggest their sources contact them via Tor to ensure confidentiality. A substantial number of Tor users are merely libertarian minded people who want to protect their privacy, even if they have nothing in particular to hide. As previously mentioned, a lot of people use Tor to surf adult porn in places where it is blocked and/or illegal. Law enforcement and intelligence agencies use Tor for open source intelligence gathering and in undercover operations. A lot of people interested in technology dabble with Tor to various degrees.

hell I am pretty much just retyping this more comprehensive (and yet still partial) list of reasons why people use Tor:

https://www.torproject.org/about/torusers.html.en

If you consider yourself libertarian you should really use Tor for all of your non-sensitive (ie: bad if intercepted or prone to get you locked out if Tor exit is used) surfing, the more people who use Tor the better anonymity it offers to all of its users.
