Title: SPAM FILTER NEEDED - MTGIX
Post by: tizzat on August 31, 2012, 05:55 am
Can we get a spam filter that the moderators could add a specific strings that would automatically just lock a users account until a moderator reviews the message. like to be more specific the magic words MTGIX... cause im tired of getting blown up lol.

But thats why i suggested a moderator review before clearing to continue posting/messaging.Once a user is cleared to not be a spammer the filter would be obsolete?

So like say I said mtgix, id be locked out till a moderator unlocked my account, but then i could type mtgix 10000 times.

What about putting a temperorary posting limitation for new accounts.
It could be a simple on/off sort of feature that is automatically enabled for newly registered accounts, and then it limits them to 3-5 posts a day until they either reach a certain number of posts or until a mod sees that it is a legit user and disables it.

Or it could be like DF, where a new user can't post outside of the introductions thread, and then they have to wait for a mod to disable the limitation.

just throwing some ideas out there

Although this is a good idea in theory, in practice it is going to run into a few snags. The string mtgix occurs in people's PGP keys, or PGP-encrypted messages, for instance. The problem is finding some sort of a mechanism that will impede/deter spammers while at the same time not penalizing legitimate users going about their business on the Forum.

Multiple keyword filter, perhaps.  Maybe the string "mtgix" isn't enough by itself, but put that together with "bitcoin" or "www" or something.   I think it's unlikely that the string www.mtgix.com is going to appear in a PGP key or message.  Who knows... I guess the fact that spam has made it to the SR forums means that we've achieved a certain level of uptake among the general population.  It's still a pain in the ass, though.

Its kinda just ridiculous they spam the whole forum out at least 2-3 times a day.

What about auto-banning anyone who has no previous posts, that creates a topic with mtgix in the subject or body of the topic?

Put a timer on topic creation.. Like max 1 topic every 15minutes..
It won't stop them, but it will make it a lot harder to spam the entire forum the way they do now.

you can add a captcha requirement to post if account has under X number of posts. This is out of box feature of smf.  Still probably won't stop them, but it would slow them down. I say set it for 25 posts and under requires captcha I'm sure that requires the admin panel to activate this also, but if I were a MOD, I would want the help in fighting these fucking swine off. the MODs should spam indica|sativa's PM box requesting this feature be activated!

This feature on their wiki: http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Security_and_Moderation#Anti-Spam

At least that makes it more doll to the spammer. As for the post limits in time, simple machine doesn't seem to have such feature. There's only a filter that limits the PM's in a hour (also in the top link),  but not the posts.

Maybe you have good reasons for not adding this already but, why not add the classic, a real onion mail verification when creating an account. You can always encourage creating a new onion mail just to register for the ultra paranoid. That will make it even more doll to the spammers.

no reason to not implement it, yeash, it makes things a bit tougher to post as a newb, and as such doesn't effect people like me, but the extra 10 seconds to post by newbs is no problem if it stops the spam BS, and makes the life of the mods easier (other than Limitless, because bots never tire)
