Title: Silk Road gets a new look!

UPDATE:  the new style has been launched.  take a look!  If you find any bugs, please message support asap.  Thanks :)

Greetings everyone!  It has been some time since I have made an official announcement, and I am very pleased to be making this one today:  The look and feel of our beloved market will be transformed in just a few days time!

We have been working tirelessly to deploy many "behind the scenes" upgrades over the past few months that have vastly improved our security, flexibility and availability.  These advances aren't sexy, and don't get much fan fair, but hopefully you've noticed the site running smoothly even as our community grows.  This kind of work rarely get's acknowledged, so I would just like to applaud everyone on the Silk Road team that has put in the effort to make this possible.

But now, in just a few days, I will have the honor of rolling out a sleek new look that will be impossible to miss and I am sure you all will love.  I feel it matches the integrity and professionalism of our community and the robust technology that empowers it.  New comers will now have the confidence they need to take that leap of faith and make their first purchase.  My hope is that this day will be looked back on as one where we really came into our own and started a new chapter in our quest to stand up for our freedom and declare ownership of ourselves and our bodies.

So you aren't too surprised when the change comes next week, here's a little sneak peak at the new login screen:
http://xfq5l5p4g3eyrct7.onion/view.php?image=ec5bd763f500d3c9d19f9e8ba2bf6107.png

When you see this, NO you are not being phished!

Much love to you all,
Dread Pirate Roberts

Looks great DPR.

But don't act like you have been busy, we all know this site runs it's self and you really don't do much but kick back and count BTC.

In fact I hear you have been on a trip with the 4/20 winner.

I know that all  to be true because I have read about it in the Gawker article.

 :P

PS. And a big THANK YOU to everyone on the SR team ;D

Hate to spoil the celebrations, but...

This msg's PGP signature is bad. Unless I have the wrong public key for DPR, then this thread has been made by an imposter & his a/c has been hacked.

Holy Shit! I can't wait to see it! And I was just on BMR and those scamming doosh bags were talking crap about how SR looks, they are so jealous:)  SilkRoad kicks the shit out of Black Market any day!

Glad to know you're ok DPR:)  I'm sure you're laughing just as hard as we are at the latest Gawker article, lol, "on vacation with the winner from the 4/20 contest"...lol!

Noticed that there were two other posts about the GPG signature being bad that almost immediately disappeared from this thread.

This is curious...

Title: Re: Silk Road gets a new look!
Post by: RxKing on July 22, 2012, 02:39 am
Yea because another one of the crazy's noticed it and set off the panic it must be LE alarm. Yet DPR came in and said he was using a new sig that was not working.

He then fixed it and said he was going to " clean up the thread so we can stay on topic" and so he deleted all the post about the mistake.

So it's no conspiracy theory...

Just a simple mistake made by DPR...

Yea every single person that buys or sells drugs knows there is a risk and that one day someone will get in trouble. We all know to be safe. But  some of these people are so paranoid.

Does there need to be 30 post a day that always turn out wrong about who is LEO or this site is going down or blah blah?... We all understand better safe to be sorry. It's a dead horse.

If everyone was just honest, then they would admit that every single post has been a false alarm when it comes to LEO or this site being compromised or shut down. Just a fact. But there are a handful of very smart posters in this forum that are constantly pulling the fire alarm.

But the cool thing is.... this is a forum and if they want to make those post then fine!

In fact even though I 100% disagree and think they should scale it back 90% on all the LE post and this site going down and this vendor being busted... I like the fact they make there post. This forum needs different opinions and it needs paranoid people. Because one day they will be right :)

Hey Lim it's already been handled about 20 min ago.

But somehow after DPR fixed his signature, he then deleted about 10 post and we were all on track but when he did that it somehow went back to his old signature.

And of course then it all started again.

Ohnoes. DPR has been compromised. Q.Q;;

Would be super shitty if they did indeed commandeer the site and now this "new look" is just LE's way of getting to us all, but I am pretty sure they're too stupid to do anything like that.. Hell, they have hard times commandeering vehicles in pursuits.. etc.

They suck, basically. So bad it tastes awesome.

Yes it is valid. :)

The panic is over (again!)

Moderators/others please chime in to double check and verify PGP validation for the current signature to prove it's not a situation in which pine and DPR's accounts have been both hacked.

edit:

P.S. If you don't already know, you are supposed to sign a PGP public key if you trust the owner. However, this has to be the public key you received from them originally, not any new offers of public keys a possible imposter might try to make to you.

Great!

Hope the running smoother bit is true!

People do not visit websites for sexy flash video and all singing all dancing shining lights.

Content is king!

Hope the code has some trick to electrocute any scammers - you know, ask to FE on cheap 100% pure coke - the twat is instantly fried.

Its the burning of innocent family members that gets to me.

And yes, sometimes people jump at shadows here!

The only LEA possibility I have raised is happytime and his, her. their, collecting of a few hundred addys. I dropped my drop due to that little situation but no more comment on it.

Look forward to next week as I hit the jackpot on the lottery and won £10.

Might get an oz of UK coke.

 ;D

Look forward to the roll out of the new look and recoded SR.

Hey DPR, I have a comment and a question.
The new features you're implementing, they wouldn't happen to be using javascript would they?  Also, adding new css and images would just increase the amount of data needed to be sent and encrypted/decrypted through the network increasing overall latency.  Is my assertion correct here?

Signature is all good, checked from my records.
Mana I think DPR knows not to use javascript, seeing as scrips are disabled in Tor..
Also, we use CSS / images on this site and it load pretty well.

Ok, the only reason I ask is because that log in prompt looked like a lightbox type of login and individuals can enable js, even on TOR.  As far as the css and images, it's pretty minimal now but with the overhaul I was wondering if their would be a significant increase.

Post-Panic-Thoughts:

Look forward to seeing the new changes, so many questions. Will you be using a PGP warning message at the message sending facility on SR to prompt newbs to use PGP when sending their addresses to vendors etc. Does our camel logo receive an upgrade? What is the name of the camel anyway? All these things are important :D

@ManaFromHeaven

It is possible to use special programs to optimize/compress html/css to smaller size. However it's usually completely unreadable source when you do that.

Yea, most servers gzip data before spitting it out I'm sure DPR does this.  It's uncompressed at the client so it should be legible, even it if wern't humanly legible ( obfuscated code ) it really wouldn't matter unless you were trying to debug or peek into the inner working of the site.   Meh, I'll just see what it looks like when it comes out, can't wait.

It's not that type of compression algorithm, not like gzip or winzip. Those preserve the data to be the same after as before compression.

It is where the code of the webpage is syntactically altered in a fashion that keeps the same appearance, but which is actually smaller in overall page size and is the fastest to load for a browser. There is a special name for this technique, but I have forgotten it, it is not obfuscation either, because the intention isn't to make the webpage harder to hard. Anyway, if you go googling it, ensure it's with Tor some other time to prevent timing information being collected for analysis or other funky stuff.

Paranoid Pine

P.S. Regarding 'The Great Panic' of 228 GMT, I regret nothing :P

The new style has no javascript, only html and css like the current style.  If we do ever introduce something like that, you will be given forewarning, and it will not be required to use the site.  The new style will be a little more bandwidth intensive, but it has been tested and our infrastructure and the tor network should be able to handle it, though the final deployment will be the real test.

I thought heros were a thing of the past. I thought my generation didn't have them. And then a long came DPR and the Road...

I believe DPR will be remembered like Steve Jobs as a great innovator, but also more than that- a hero. A freedom fighter. The one who finally ended the war on drugs and saved thousands- maybe millions- of people from becoming victims of that war.

Thank you everyone- DPR, the SR team, and all you members of this amazing community.
You guys give me hope.

Not to be a spoilsport.

But I really couldn't care less about the design of SR.  I think the way it is now works perfectly "If it aint broke, don't fix it". If it's possible, I'd like an option to keep it the way it is. At least please don't make it too flash, plain and simple is the best!

(Oh, and I spent ages trying to login, thinking OnionImageUploader now required login to view images haha)
Title: Re: Silk Road gets a new look!
Post by: sourman on July 22, 2012, 07:27 pm
^The design change probably grew out of planned code changes to the backend (database, server-side scripting) and functional elements of the frontend (forms, captcha) that are aimed at improving security and increasing server capacity. If you're going to revamp the workings of the site, might as well spruce up the design a bit too ya know.

Also, I want everyone to be aware that the Tor Browser Bundle does NOT block javascript by default. Torbutton blocks certain "dangerous" scripts but allows others to run as long as they don't match any rules. Same goes for the NoScript installation included with TBB. If you want to block all scripting, hover your mouse over the NoScript icon and select "Forbid all scripts globally (advised)". Most sites on the clearnet will not work properly, but this is a must for browsing the darknet, particularly sites like SR.

Please make sure you're using the latest version of not only the TBB, but also the add-ons included. Periodically (and whenever you first open TBB) go to Tools > Add-Ons > Check for updates (click the button with the gear symbol).

yes, what rxking is saying is true.

What, you mean insulting anyone who raised the issue about the bad PGP signature?
I think he just meant that RXKing's account of what had just happened was accurate.  DPR posted with a dodgy sig, a few people pointed it out, it was corrected, then fucked up again when the thread was cleaned up, causing a second influx of posts.

Kudos to everyone who caught onto the bad sig.  Your vigilance is appreciated.

It is no secret that gpg signing is something that DPR consistently has trouble with. when he announced the new URL, he had 2 different URLs posted using the same signature. the signature checked out on the URL that didn't work, and the sig was bad for the URL that did.

So honestly, if the signature checked out when the message was first posted, I would worry that he had been compromised...lol

but in the future, DPR, why don't you verify your signed messages before posting them, since you are the site admin and all, take the extra step to avoid spooking the thousands of customers who depend on you for their security. Because if you can't get a simple signed message correct, how are we to trust you with not only our money, but in some peoples cases, plaintext addresses.

end of rant about DPR needing to bone up on his practices, now for the important part of the post. The site doesn't need a makeover at all. there are 6 things that the admin should be spending his time on other than giving a facelift.

1.security
2.functionality

When I first stepped on the Road over a year ago I knew that this was a special place. I was so overcome with a childlike sense of wonder, amazement and curiosity that it took me a few months (and a few purchases later;) to realize it. But it finally came to me....
This could very well be the most important stance for Freedom that any of us will be a part of in our lives....
We can all go down to the carryout and buy an beverage containing alcohol and grab a pack of cigarettes no questions asked, both of which kill more people than ANY of the fine products on this site (1in 10 deaths are caused from tobacco and alcohol kills 2.5 million people a year).
Now I smoke and I drink from time to time and I'm not against the 2. That is our choice. Just like it's OUR choice and responsibility to know our body and research anything we put in it....
All of you helped build SR what it is today, we watched it grow, emerge like a beautiful fractal in the Mandlbrot, expanding and growing. This time is the most exciting time to possibly be alive in the entire history of the world... the Road is part of R-evolution.
The Road is harm reduction in one of it's truest forms...
I extend my gratitude to ALL of the vendors and the brilliant minds that take the time to post useful information in the forums. We all make the Road what it is, a shining star of Freedom,a wonderful display of non-violent civil disobedience and a unified voice against rules put upon us by people who either don't give a damn or don't care to understand what liberty means...
All of you that care about the Road..... Thank You....
and to you DPR, I love you man..... seriously...
Much love, Sincerely  darkmirror

Security should always be the #1.

I trust the admins and DPR. They have done an amazing job re-establishing our Freedom in a form that none of us have ever seen possible... nor ever thought possible.

I, personally, have only been a member for around 3 months.. give or take, but I feel like I am a part of something amazing and immaculate, because I am.
We are.

I have known about the site for so long... and I just thought to myself "There is no way..."
Then I finally found myself here.. on the Road.. and I must say.. "What a long, strange trip it's been."

Much love to the Person/People who make the Road an easy thing to walk.

Thumbs UP.

I am sure in the beginning if there are two different layouts. (the new and the old.)
There will probably be some bugs that will affect people differently throughout the old layout and within the new layout.

Who knows.

The current signature check out ok, thanks. While I'm on the subject of signatures, you might wish to consider upgrading your default hash algorithm in your PGP preferences. SHA-1 is deprecated, due to increasingly effective attacks against it mounted in the last few years. I'd highly recommend that you switch to one of the SHA2 hash algorithms, e.g. SHA256 or SHA512.

You can do that by adding the following lines to your gpg.conf file:

# sets personal message-digest preferences
personal-digest-preferences sha512

You may also need to edit the key to update the cipher and hash algorithm preferences in the key.

The current preferences for the SR staff key are:

Quote
gpg> list

     Compression: ZLIB, BZIP2, ZIP, Uncompressed
     Features: MDC, Keyserver no-modify

gpg>

I'd change the digest order to: SHA512, SHA384, SHA256, SHA224, SHA1

Actually, you can compare the above to mine:

     Compression: BZIP2, ZLIB, ZIP, Uncompressed
     Features: MDC, Keyserver no-modify

gpg>

I just made sure I had the right preferences listed in my gpg.conf before I generated the key and everything was set.  I probably should've cut MD5 out entirely and maybe swapped 3DES and CAST5 around, but if I receive anything from anyone here using MD5, CAST5 or 3DES I'll probably already be taking them to task about their OpenPGP implementation.

The rest of your post is spot on, although I'd also encourage updating the UID to not include the (dead?) clearnet domain.

When logging onto SR via Android in usual way I only get white screen. Across the top it says I'm at the page but the rest of the page wont load. The last thing I did was withdraw funds from SR. I had to clear my cache and delete cookies so my log in page would be clear and fresh.

Now I only get white screen with typical text across top of page after having logged in.

Don't leave yourself out, eh?

It would be awfully presumptive of me to nominate myself.  ;)

I'm just curious, though, what do you have against 3DES and CAST5?  I'll grant you, CAST5 is a 128-bit cipher, and 3DES has an effective strength of 112-bits due to  meet-in-the-middle attack.... that said, no one (to my knowledge at least) has shown that they are broken.  After all, weren't 256-bit ciphers introduced only as a precaution against quantum computers  becoming available that could break smaller keys?

I've got nothing against Triple-DES or CAST5, but probably should've reversed the order because of the meet-in-the-middle attack since CAST5 is 128-bit and likely slightly stronger than Triple-DES.  I'd only take people to task for using them because it would likely be indicative of using some truly ancient implementation of OpenPGP and may be indicative of other issues.  I'd take it on a case-by-case circumstance.

SHA1 and MD5 are, of course, another matter entirely.

As for 256-bit ciphers being adopted to foil quantum computing, there's some truth to that to be sure.  Still, the ciphers are available so why not take advantage of them.

after reading this thread im beginning to realize that the admins are in need of many thank yous as well! the "hidden heros" of SR are the admins and line code writers that make this international virtual marketplace a reality. STRONG WORK DPR and all that serve to fight our cause virtually!

Also looks like SR is getting a black border like many other sites have on the clearnet, the font for the logo is slimmer, and the camel lost a little wisp below his neck, anyone else notice that? lol.

Very nicely done, it looks a lot better.

The preview images could be smaller to allow for more listings. I'm not particularly fussed about having images listed so having the option to turn them off would be cool. I'd rather see images under the product description than alongside the category listings, like it was before.

There's now plenty of hooks available to allow for easier customization. If you could remove the inline styling that would be awesome.

Job well done whoever did it :)

Indentured servants get something out of the contract besides regular whippings. Most commonly (historically) passage to America in exchange for some years of service.

Looks like most of the bugs were fixed! Now that it works, I'm really liking this new layout. The mouseover, drop-down categories menu is nice, and I like featured listings panel. It would still be nice to be able to switch styles and go back to the old one just in case, but whatever works. It's not like this one uses significantly more bandwidth or anything. As long as this style is secure, functional, and free of scripting, I'm down.

Anyways, keep it up, great work.

Anything that is RELEASED will always have bugs.. but for someone to just go and bash DPR for the things he "implements without testing" is ridiculous.

I am sure this person/people spend countless hours coding and testing their stuff just to make sure their fellow followers in this community are pleased to the UTMOST.

I really do appreciate you DPR for what you do here and I can only imagine what you stand for IRL.

It's real nice, good job guys.

One small suggestion I have is it would be cool if there were more parameters to sort the listings into, rather than just the 3 we have currently (Bestselling, Seller Rank & Newest). Extra parameters could be Highest price, Lowest price, Location etc. Just an idea. :)
Title: Re: Silk Road gets a new look!

here are a few minor cosmetic problems people might not mention:

- the category tree expands the inventory column on the left to the point where it overlaps onto the listings. you could maybe change the color of the text so you don't have to offset it, though it only seems to be a problem for categories that have long names, like " CDs, DVDs, software, etc." under Digital Goods.
- number of items per category is missing.
- the 'remove' in the Bookmarked Items on the right is hard to see. most of the titles for items are varying lengths, it's just annoying really to have to hunt for it each time. maybe have 'remove' be on a different line every time? or put a tiny bit of space between each bookmark. the problem i suppose is mostly because of each listing being several lines that vary and being cramped together.

a few requests:
- can we add 'ships to' under 'ships from' on the listings? it doesn't look like it'd be a problem to fit it anymore, since it wouldn't require an extra column. mostly I want this to be able to search for vendors who ship worldwide, which might be better served by a small icon.
- can we add something that tells you if FE is required/required for intnl customers quickly, on the listing itself, so you don't have to rummage through descriptions looking for the one offhand comment that tells you so? again maybe an icon might work better.
- running with this icon thing again, other things that might be useful to know, like 'tracking/express international available', etc. so you don't have to bother vendors with those questions, and don't have to go through the process of carting it to check.
- I for example, come from what I'm guessing from experience is a fairly obscure country for SR to be shipping to. I don't know how useful it would be to the community at large, but could we do a survey amongst the vendors, and divide the world up into zones, so they can list whether they ship to said zones without again having to bother them for more info? additionally they might not be able to offer guaranteed prices on tracking/express to a few countries, so zoning on the basis of frequency in the community might help them at least say "ask for shipping".

- i personally think you should have a "switch to USD/BTC" toggle out in the open instead of having to rummage through the account page, or again, having to cart it.
- 'empty cart' option on the cart page? or maybe even a (select and) remove option per item?

- sort by price?
- sort individual items by feedback left on said item (and not just the vendor)?

anyway, thank you for your time and effort.

The new look is great, but I haven't been able to see it for more than 3 or 4 seconds before Firefox crashes.

Just trashed and updated to the most recent Tor bundle, but to no avail. I'm able to get to the login screen, but as soon as the Home screen appears, Firefox crashes.

OK I solved this. I went back to the TOR download site at https://www.torproject.org/download/download and grabbed the "latest" version. This fixed the problem. I put "latest" in quotes because the Firefox version is actually OLDER! I was running 12.0 but am now using 10.0.5!

The new site looks fantastic - lovely job. It looks a lot cleaner, and the ability to see images of products in a gallery without clicking is a god-send. I would, however, suggest:

1. Ability to sort by price
2. Ability to display price in GBP.
3. Add view feedback and purchasing stats on the main page at the top, next to messages etc.

I'm so proud to be part of this amazing site - it would have been so easy to rest on your laurels, but alas you have endeavored to make this site better and more secure with each passing month. As a libertarian, I am thrilled that DPR promotes the work of the incredible Von Mises foundation and this place is a heaven for me to visit.

i miss the numbers next to the categories and subcategories, (ie. Cannabis (899), Topicals (1).)  It helped knowing when listings have come or gone,

and also i used to be able to copy my user number, go to someones vendor page and erase their numbers from the end of the url and replace with mine to get my stats...now all i get is the option to send myself a message.....not that this is entirely that important where im a buyer and not a vendor and i should know how long ive been on the road. haha

OS X 10.7.3 here been browsing the site for 10 minutes and no problem :)

I love the new look, but I agree with the numbers thing, it really helped browsing. The pictures next to the name are really useful and my favourite change in appearance.

What if vendors had an option to put their PGP in a box that didn't mean it takes up most of the page and you could copy and paste from it easily? It seems like cumbersome to have large PGP keys when the rest of the site is so streamlined.

until we figure out the problem some osx users are having, try installing windows in a virtual machine on your osx host.  You can get VirtualBox for osx here: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.1.18/VirtualBox-4.1.18-78361-OSX.dmg

here are instructions:

When you have windows xp running, download the tor browser bundle for windows, install, and visit silk road.  This is untested, so if anyone does this, let us know if it works.

I'm not gonna lie, the numbers were really nice to have. But as for your stats as a buyer, it's still the same. Replaceing the URL with a non-vendor has ALWAYS been send message and NOT stats.

basically it would be the top of any vendors page without any info......like i said, it was pointless but it did work! I even did it last night just to see how long ive been a member...

Since the design update, some of the pages are being served without content (blank white pages) like I use to see quite often a few months ago. I have also been kicked back to a login page several times while trying to browse the site.

Edited for update: it keeps happening often enough that the frustration isn't worth it. Will be taking my money elsewhere as I can't actually make any transactions without being served a blank page or being logged out. Guess I gotta go deal with the street bullshit.

Good work guys :) However I do agree with previous poster's comments, I used to use the numbers next to categories to check for new listings, this is going to be the biggest problem as I could see when new listings were up straight away, now there is no way of knowing apart from looking through all listings every single time, this is going to be very time consuming as before the change I could just check if numbers had increased or not.

Certainly a feast for the eyes, prefer some of new smaller text. And DPR gets a logo!

The listings look huge to me, so few on a page, maybe that's the spacing problem mentioned. I would like to see smaller listings than the old site could browse much faster before.

Even the change to the login is an improvement I've had several people ask silly questions about that when I showed them the old site.

I'm sure more important changes went on 'under the hood' than we see tho. Maybe its a preparation for the way so new features can come. No new features I'm aware of tho.

You could do that on the old site.

site is impossible to even fking use right now.

- % sign bug still

- Under orders if someone includes alot of text in the "address" box big black area's appear making the page all screwed up.

- Constant login prompt

- Listings page 2 returns to account page

- Number of listings # next to categories gone :( (i liked that feature)

- i hate the giant listings. Is there a way to change the size?

You could cut down on the traffic of the site if you make the listings smaller and stop making sub sections for the account page.

All that does is add network traffic

While things are being fixed.. Why don't you guys turn error reporting off, with errors being logged to a private file that gets inspected by staff to see what hackers are attempting to do would be incredible! There are multiple reasons this is a very good idea.

I LOVE that you added pictures to the listings page. Too dope.
The only thing I was really hoping for that didn't show up was having the option to always display EU/GBP/USD and BTC similtaneously.
I have to say though... I am gunna kind of miss the shady "old school" look.

More like an old bug that I thought would get changed in the upgrade. Or maybe Im missing something:

Any reason why when sort by "best selling" an unranked vendor with 0 sales ever would show up before me in the product list?

With this new site re-design putting pictures in the forefront and kinda backseating the vendor as a vendor; this matters to me now.

Most of the site looks much better with the new style, but PLEASE do something about the product listings. It's much better to be able to see a large number of listings on the screen rather than just a few items with large thumbnails and large text. Trying to compare listings like that is absolutely maddening, even on my 27" 1920x1080 screen--- only 5-6 listings are visible at a time!! Could there be an option to display product listings the old way?

. keep up the good work DPR! Honestly tho SR is still very young. I suspect this is only one of the many changes that were liable to see. I wander if he added anymore servers or some much needed bandwidth. I think he's doing a really great job. This place will definitely morph into a different look many more times. I imagine that there has been many offers to buy it. Zuckerbird probably wants to buy it hahaha. How many members does SR have now? Almost 28,000?

I concur, awesome site improvements.  Great work DPR.  Are you really doing this all yourself?  If so, that's amazing.

I also notice the bug with the Best Selling sort order.  It's definitely not correct.  I saw a $5,000 item at the top of the list and I highly doubted it was the best selling.

I have a few ideas for functionality improvements.  Let's improve the feedback display since this can be very crucial for buyers if they want to buy from a vendor.  By default all feedback could display the buyer's home country.  Take this from their settings.  Or when giving the feedback the buyer choose which country it was shipped to.

Secondly, let's allow buyers to more easily search through a vendor's negative reviews.  Put a drop down arrow and say show all feedback that is 1/5.

I don't "hate" it, but at the moment, I'm not digging it much. The images have become a hinderance to viewing the listings.

The "look" is nice, but the gigantic images need to be tweaked a bit, if not discarded all together. In most cases, images don't mean a whole lot. They have their purpose but they aren't important. They're just a nice bonus. Images shouldn't overshadow description and price.

Having dozens of drug pictures on my monitor makes the browsing experience less comfortable.

Keep the fresh look, but I could really do without the images!

I also really miss the #'s next to each category. That was a feature I relied on heavily.

Until these things are resolved, the fact is that Black Market Reloaded has better features.

And the listings have become uncomfortable to view, it's like you've just zoomed in on the old listings, I feel like I'm sitting 30cms from my monitor. We need to zoom out a bit, make the listings smaller so more fit on the page.

The new Layout is certainly very nice, congrats.
But as already discussed, the functionality in my opinion are worst.

- The item count for each category is a MUST. So it's easy to monitor if new items are added or not.

- The picture size could be ok, for people who likes it. But it's really unpractical to me, to scroll down the list to check the country where the item ships from. With the old layout it was possible to check immediately the country. Now it takes longer. Another feature really needed for this design, it's a drop-down list with all the country of the category, so it would be easy to filter only the desired country.

For all the rest, a great job ^^

Hello everyone,

Today i saw the new design of sr for the first time. My first thought was that it must have been a lot of work to implement all the changes, then that i liked the old version of the site better. I too was randomly logged out. Logging back in took me 10 minutes, i assume that because of the slow reaction time the captchas i entered must have each time have expired too soon.

Better looks is nice, but i'm not even sure about that. With the old version the info was presented in a much more compact fashion. The listings page now has pictures of the products but one has too spent much more time to find the wanted products. The size of the fonts is strangely chosen. The name of the vendor, which for me is an important piece of information, is too small. The messages/orders/account menu items are too small. I think the table form was more efficient. Even if the performance issues and the forced logouts were fixed, i would still prefer the older design.

As a Vendor I've had a chance to use the site today. I do like the new looks and it could help draw in more new members to the road but from a vendor standpoint looks dont matter at all to me, just functionality. I don't like that the account page has less info on the main page and more sub categories. I'd like to have more info displayed on one page so I don't have to navigate between pages or waste more time clicking and loading sub pages.

I do like the new look but I don't think any of the improvements have made vending more efficient, just less :/

Definitely a beautiful new look, though the pics are a little large and kinda take up too much room making it a little harder to easily identify seller or country where shipped from while having a quick scroll through.

As others have mentioned the item count should be brought back, that i say is a must.

I agree with many that, while the new "polished" look of the site is nice, the removal of functionality is a huge no-no in web design...item counts, ease of access of certain information, it's a little bit harder to use the site with these changes (albeit also a little bit "nicer")

In any case, I appreciate the work that went into the changes--especially those we can't see on the back-end.  Keep it up.

does anyone take any design classes on your team??

i do like that u are trying to update and make the experience bright bold and new but there are some very basic design principals that could have been look at when placing pages together. keep moving forward!

My order page is blank with the exception of headers/footers in tact. Any idea what's up? Besides that, loving the new interface!

New site looks amazing. I'm glad the numbers next to the products are back. Looks like there is plenty of feedback asking for new features. Some of the requests make sense and the implementation of them would make the SR experience that much better.

I'm all for site redesigns, its mainly a CSS upgrade this, but I'm not sure what it does brings much with it. OK it looks a bit nicer.

Miss the number of vendors per drug, don't really need vendor photos at the size they are as it now takes way longer to scroll the list and loads don't bother with pictures anyway.

Sort by bestseller is still only working in some categories, and seems to be reversed in others.

Sort by bestseller is still only working in some categories, and seems to be reversed in others.

I reported this to support, it is not sorting on best selling it is sorting it from oldest vendor to youngest vendor. A vendor that has been on for 6 months is higher on the list than one that has been on for 2 months. Then the order of the listings from the vendor are sorted based on first entered.

Vendor support acknowledged that it is a bug and responded that they were looking into it.

Dont know if this helps anyone else but thought I would say it on here as well.

Thanks for getting this looked into James, but the bug is even more then that. I have a guy with 0 feedback ever that joined after me that is still getting listed before me under Cubensis.

Not a huge deal, but to the newb buyer - it is a deceiving sort option.

Appreciate your time and upgrades!
Although it is eye candy, the layout is a bit more work for vendors trying to access their listings, profile, settings, etc.
especially when the site is running slow :(
I wish there were a way to customize your toolbar or something....

The main change  I was really hoping for out of all this was to have more sorting options available in the listings.  It can be a long process to go through pages upon pages of listing when you are just looking for that one amount or price or location.

An 'advanced' search I feel would be really useful, that way you can narrow listings down to exactly the criteria one is desiring to purchase.

With that said, digging the new and improved SR :)  I just hope with all these cosmetic changes that the team so successfully launched this week that they are keeping our security twice as hard.

In no way am I doubting that security is an issue as I've been around for some time, but we gotta keep this shit going as long as we fuckin can!

Nobody wants to wind up in a jail cell 20 years from now over this shit, gotta keep safety as key  ALWAYS!

I'm always worried that the site may go down after I transfer btc or something, It would suck if it just blacked out for a couple days and nobody knew what the fuck was going on for days...I know it's happened before and I really hope with the extra bandwidth that the servers can handle all the traffic.

Hello,

for some reason I can't see menu with new look (first few days it was there, but now gone), all I can see is "Shop by category" and small round empty div under it. I pressed CTRL + R few times too, so all new and changed files for SR should be up to date. Also nothing happens when I hover or click that area..

Can provide screenshot or html if needed.

Edit: Missed this thread: http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=32599.0, though problem still exists hovering with mouse doesn't help :/

I like it.

When I first came here I didn't actually believe it was real, and that was with the old look.

Now, any newcomers are going to be even more mindblown.

All you need now DPR is a "favourite items" list.. and an automated email system that messages users when their designated items have come back in stock/lowered price/whatever the variable.

Then this truly will be the "amazon of drugs"

I Miss the direct sub-category navigation from an item.

For instance if  I'm looking at a listing of hash (subcategory for cannabis), I can click hash and it will take me to all the hash listings again.
Now I have to go back to cannabis and select hash again.

As a Vendor I've had a chance to use the site today. I do like the new looks and it could help draw in more new members to the road but from a vendor standpoint looks dont matter at all to me, just functionality.

I'm  sorry to have edited your post so much awakened. I want anyone who may see this that I DID NOT HAVE AND I DO NOT HAVE AWAKENED'S PERMISSION TO EDIT OUT WHAT I EDITED OUT! I'm certain that must be grounds for divorce in some country(s) or in some court some where, but I didn't understand some of it and when I don't get it I  try to zip it! Your welcome!

That disclaimer being noted and certainly not to always be the proverbial stick in the mud, I must say;  1. I don't like the new look. I must confess that I don't like change of anything so don't please worry too much or loose sleep over THAT! ( like anyone was 'worry'ing about anything you think or say! :) who are you talking to anyway? ) and 2. I don't know if it's me or what, but I can't see much of what I think might be there. I don't know that I have any color blindness or other ocular oddities that could cause this sudden inability to see or not see something all of a sudden ??? or that may or may not be anything anyone else sees clearly here on The Road since this new look/design replaced the old look/design. I have never been diagnosed of any ailment or deformity that would cause this problem. Until having to use the new SR look/design did it even occur to me that a lack of color harmony once dumped on the screen in the peanut could be a possibility?

There are no options that I'm missing, right? A button there (but I can't see it because of this ... sudden color blindness maybe? :) ) that says "To view in classic mode click here"? Right?

It gives me a headache trying to see what may or may not be there. Maybe there is one of those, or there could be one of those "You are here" diagrams like they have in stores so you know where things are at when walking into unfamiliar places? So that people like me don't get lost or even maybe they miss something they may have purchased, but just can't see the path to it?  Or even other potential customers like myself that can't see things because of an inability to see things because of the colors? I don't really know what the problem is. I feel like I'm going to step on something or fall down a stair way that wasn't marked clearly or something. In that sense it's a pretty cool design/look that makes one feel like blowing chunks.  It is an exhilarating feeling when I think about it, but so is the feeling of jumping from a perfectly good airplane. I don't like that either and no matter how many times I do I spew, yet I do it any way. (hold on - I'm getting nauseated and I'm getting confused ??? why did I come here?)

Oh yeh! If there was something like the 'yrh' thingy I was just talking about and a recalled memory of falling through that stair way while entering the main floor of Silk Road hit me, thinking about falling though a stair way you can't see its location now because the tiles or carpet have just been installed and the railings have not been put back up...... wait!  I think I've done that! ( damnit Beavis! ??? I'm confused again! Crap!) Oh yeh - the 'yrh' thingy - Then I would know I'm not seeing something that I think is there but in reality is not OR something really IS there and I am seeing it as I trip over because of the new carpeting colors/lay out OR I'm not looking for something I feel is there, but really is not there?

Damn it, I'm confused again! ??? and nauseated too!

I loved the old 'black and white' sharpness/feeling of things in the old version. I never experienced 'vertigo' before from SR. Looking at listings when you enter an item to search for - I couldn't even find that window at first -  now seems harder to see too. I'm guessing it's that 'color' thingy too. No, I'm not smoking anything nor am I under the influence of MDA or anything else that could possibly cause this problem, but maybe that IS the problem, eh Beavis?

Lastly when am doing something in that corner that has the 'shop by category' link, just by my passing of my cursor there or even close to 'there', - that area, I could be editing a post or doing anything 'there' and then like an old childhood nightmare coming back to haunt me - the list drops down scaring the shit out of me! Makes me remember the times adults would get such a kick out of scaring the fuck out of me before I knew what it was (the Jack in the Crotch toy - hideous!) and while I screamed in absolute horrific terror, they would laugh like banshees!

(he-heh but I got em all back!:)

It just makes me feel like I'm a kid again and some morbid mother fucker is getting their jollies knowing I just soiled myself - again!!! - and is (are?) getting a real 'tickle' from showing me my first Jack in the Box! Again! You would think I'd get used to it, but I am jumpy just thinking about that list jumping out and onto this page! I'm not sure why but it seems to give me a start every time it happens and DAD's (Depends Adult Diapers) are really expensive! It's kinda irritating that it reminds me once again that I don't like change.

Shrug? Sorry

And in closing  - I seem to be the only one that doesn't care for the new look/design. I'm so delusional I guess, because when I had the time to mess around here and after a few days using the new design and coming to see how others thought about it, I really expected to see a whole bunch of comments that were just different versions of my .... dislike(s) of the new look/design and now I'm depressed a little more now to once again be reminded of my inability to conform - even in the presence of other non-conformist!

I've never been able to just swim in the direction of the majority. My Science teacher that I had from 2nd grade until 6th constantly reminded me of this "abnormal" ..... nature I had - have. But now that I think about it - now; he also said it was my strongest trait and to follow such personal inclinations when they came to me  -  to do so with everything and that my life and those live's of others'  around me - would be enriched more because of it!

{knock knock knock?? - HELLO?!? Mr. Downs!!! I'm STILL waiting!!!}

Soooo - probably just another one of many personal defects housed in this tiny little brain pan of mine that  .  .   .   .   .    oh never mind!

Shut up and say 'goodnight Gracie!'

Oh yeh! Did I tell y'all that I love ya? Nah, better not say that either.  ???   damn! But I do!  :)

This is really extraordinary; it really simulates an Amazon or Ebay shopping experience. Also, it's going to be much more user friendly for newcomers. Not that I had any problem with the old site but this is simply a much better upgrade.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but I'm probably going to come across as one...

You clearly need to look through the forums harder.  Everything you need to know has already been asked and answered here.  If you have specific questions, asking in the proper forum would be more helpful than posting this on a thread about a site redesign.  The security subforum is a great starting place for questions about bitcoins.  Also, try a Google search for 'purchasing bitcoins from the UK' and you will find lots of helpful information.

i think what j0blo , the undisputed ruler and expert of this forum with a massiv 67 posts under his belt is trying to say, is keep your questions vague dont do any research and ignore the hell out of google and the information here because its all wrong. thats what i get reading his post, after i get through all of the technical know-how and tons of expertise that radiates off of him like a naked pattinson sparkling in the sun.

I like how tidy it is on the vendor accounts now, much more streamlined.

J0blo you are right my man...Trollface you are a twat anyway.....Drugfiend81, c'mon man, you can do better than this? If you don't have it in you to find out how to go about the processes required here to buy drugs online, you probably shouldn't be here. This is a thread about the new look of SR, not for asking questions about how someone can hold your hand and walk you through the process of BTC, PGP or buying drugs off the site. Just do some fucking research man....If you are going to succeed and thrive here you will need to have some wits about you and it does my nut when I see people asking the kind of shit you are asking.......

Riggghhhhhhtttt. Back on topic....I think the pics off all listings give it a great touch. Great job DPR & crew! The bugs will get ironed out soon and the site will run as smoothly as it always has!!

Shit I'm high......sorry for that splurge!! >:D

The new style has no javascript, only html and css like the current style.  If we do ever introduce something like that, you will be given forewarning, and it will not be required to use the site.  The new style will be a little more bandwidth intensive, but it has been tested and our infrastructure and the tor network should be able to handle it, though the final deployment will be the real test.

i think you should bring some optional javascript. but how much of an issue is it to enable js on a tor browser? why is it disabled in the first place? does it put us at greater risk?

How do I view items that are available from overseas vendors?
I can't see that option anymore.

Look for the little check box above the listings.. and make sure it is NOT checked. Should read "Domestic Only"

With all due respect, it was a terrible idea.  We basically traded functionality for aesthetics, right?

I hate to say so, but as a vender, I agree.

To me, it seems just as the new site was going up, SR received a lot of media attention resulting in a huge spike in new members (just my theory, due to a huge increase in new orders I recently received with fresh accounts with 0 feedback)

I have never experienced so many glitches and bugs on SR before- issues with logging in, being logged off randomly, and the worst issue I am having- I took down a bunch of listings last weekend, then right after put up some new ones, the listings submitted fine, each listing shows as being listed in my account profile and also on my vender page, the pictures and listings are all there, but if you click on any, nothing comes up, just error message stating "this item is not listed".. I had this confirmed by others on this forum who also tried to access my listings and got the same error...

We just need to be patient- there isnt much else we can do...

Peace

javascript is a potential security risk and could reveal your location.

Yeah,
essentially using javascript on a Tor Hidden Service is a profound way to impact the exposure or your real ip address. Tor is also sensible to IRC and other chat methods (IRC Runs through Java Script I believe)... That's why its good to go to proxychains.sourceforge.net and download that proxy server but most importantly get a german web page translator and go to I2P.de and download that.
That program should take care of your ip address when combined with Javascript, IRC, IM, etc... It fills in tors voids.
Are there any other VPNs like Tor out there that I may not know of?  :D

no JS for silkroad please.
keep it as simple as possible with bandwidth usage as low as possible.

increase security features.

there are some potential weak points. not to the site itself, but for systematically attacks on user-accounts.
I will not release information about those, if sr devs are interested they can contact me, of course.

According to TOR developers, TOR comes with javascript enabled by default and they recommend against disabling it. Unless I am misunderstanding?

From torproject.org: https://www.torproject.org/docs/faq.html.en#TBBJavaScriptEnabled

Quote
Why is NoScript configured to allow JavaScript by default in the Tor Browser Bundle? Isn't that unsafe?

We configure NoScript to allow JavaScript by default in the Tor Browser Bundle because many websites will not work with JavaScript disabled. Most users would give up on Tor entirely if a website they want to use requires JavaScript, because they would not know how to allow a website to use JavaScript (or that enabling JavaScript might make a website work).
I'm an expert! (No, really!) Can I configure NoScript to block JavaScript by default?

You can configure your copies of Tor Browser Bundle however you want to. However, we recommend that even users who know how to use NoScript leave JavaScript enabled if possible, because a website or exit node can easily distinguish users who disable JavaScript from users who use Tor Browser bundle with its default settings (thus users who disable JavaScript are less anonymous).

Disabling JavaScript by default, then allowing a few websites to run scripts, is especially bad for your anonymity: the set of websites which you allow to run scripts is very likely to uniquely identify your browser.

Hey man, looks are nice but you really need to put your efforts into the transaction system here. Taking days to get coin into an account is just not working out. Please spend a little less time in making things look pretty and get the finance end part of it working better.

Every time I add coins to my account I have Silk Rad generate a new bitcoin address... then I send the coins immediately. I have never had ir take more that 6 hours to co through.

Why just a login screen as a preview?

This isn't DPR?  Perhaps I 'm wrong But the link doesn't work most times and its probaby hosted on some chaps computer somewhere as a PHISHING site.   IF not, its a good scam to pull off.

Hey I''m DPR - here is a new login screen sneakpeak for you to try out. .( nice long statement and write up)  .  (Try it out - it Grabs your pin code) yea !

Dunno.  Hate login screens I guess.  Call me paranoid.

I actually like the way it looks now and I'm thinking of getting the camel tattooed on me.

The Green Camel (sounds like a Super-Hero) should become the logo for the Libertarian movement world wide.

Not what i meant. I meant newbie's who didn't look at the start date and revived a long dead thread. As to why he changed the look, it seem obvious, at least to me. He changed it when the site grew exponentially as people mentioned. Why? Easy. That's when the site gained real mainstream traction. When you go public(REALLY public) you generally roll out a user friendly redesign. Key example here would be facebook. If you're site doesn't look pretty, the untrained eye will just leave. Interface is very important to the non-tech savvy people( or minimally savvy). It's just growing pains, not something i would spend a lot of time thinking about
