Title: Forum 'Ghost-Posting' Services Coming Soon -- Thoughts?
Post by: incubusdriver on September 06, 2013, 04:27 pm
Hello everybody

I'm a professional writer and I'm working on getting a vendor account set up so I can sell my services to the fine folk here on Silk Road.

There's already a debate about this in the 'restricted areas' of the forum, but I thought I'd make an announcement here too to give the 'Newbies' a voice.

Perhaps the service that will become most popular here in the Newbie Barrel, is my Forum 'Ghost-Posting' - I will be offering to jumpstart your forum presence by publishing relevant and insightful posts on your behalf, to (a) draw attention to your alias here on the forums, and (b) get you started in the Big Boys' Yard sooner.

I'll also be offering professional vendor profile rewrites, product listing makeovers and general 'non-Silk-Road' writing services.

The service is not available yet, so don't start reaching for your BitCoin wallets right away... but feel free to discuss your thoughts below.

Positive, negative, in-between... everybody's opinion is respected and valued.

Thanks :-)

Good luck.  I'm not a vendor but some of them sure as hell could use some help.

I've read through some vendor profiles that are incoherent and unnecessarily complicated.  One guy apparently didn't know what paragraphs were and it was a challenge getting through the wall of text.

I like being able to judge the competence of a potential vendor by the way they write and use the forums, obviously I'd rather not see this happen, for my own safety. Fuck all I can do about it though.

Good point.  I like to think I can pick out a ghost writer though.  If they're any good they'll make some mistakes every once in a while though, and that would throw me off.

When things are too perfect, it looks suspicious. Also you could check my messaging the vendor before ordering, and making sure the sentence structure and vocabulary match.

Very valid point, Tiger.

On the flip side however, it's true that a poor grasp of the English language can make a person appear less competent - whereas in reality, they may well be the most trustworthy, competent vendor around.

What I'm saying, is it works both ways. Whereas attractive language could very well mask a person's inability, poor proficiency in communication could mask a person's ability.

Of course, I'm going to need to work out a strategy for keeping things as fair to buyers as possible, and I'm hoping to attract mainly the following audiences:

- Established sellers with little time to manage or kick-start a forum account

- Speakers of foreign languages who may find the language barrier difficult

I'm pretty sure somebody trying to game Silk Roaders will give their game away pretty quickly though, and it's those kinds of people I'm NOT interested in working with.

Having said that, I remain aware of this issue and think it's healthy for it to be discussed here.

This would be a good indicator of detecting a 'Ghost-Poster'

Perhaps, I'd imagine that's far less common though.

You seem sound enough though and have the right intentions so I wish you well!

It's actually a lot more common than you might think. In the 'real world', I've done contracts for countless companies who don't have the ability to express themselves properly, yet have the most incredible products, products with genuinely unique features, products that far surpass their competitors'... and because of this, they fail miserably when they don't deserve to. This happens a lot. Their competitors on the other hand may have an OK product, an average customer service team, a reasonable price... etc. But because they have a fantastic marketing team, they rake in millions.

You seem sound enough though and have the right intentions so I wish you well!

Thanks, that's kind of you :-)

And thanks again for joining the discussion.

The whole 'copywriting' concept is an awesome idea.

Not sure I'd be comfortable with ghost posting, cos although I might not be the most perfect english speaker, I don't trust anybody else to talk for me!

Id definitely be up for some help with off-sr projects though (see other message in other thread i sent you)

I don't think I like the ghost forum posting idea, but I definitely have thought that quite a few of the vendors could really use a profile cleanup and better product pages.

I am personally against the forum posting since the forum seems to me to be more about the actual voice of the person posting.

I will say good luck to you, and hope that some vendors hop on for some profile and product page revisions.

Sounds like a great business plan! I'd do it myself if I weren't so busy with my shitty job. I really couldn't care less who writes what on vendor pages as long as I can understand their policies clearly. Only thing that matters is whether or not they deliver the goods and how, as far as I'm concerned. Look forward to attempting to figure out which ones are you.

This is bass-ackwards and I can't believe it isn't against the rules here.

The whole point in newbies having to make a name for themselves first is to help screen them out.
If you are literally "cheating" their way to the "Big Boys' Yard" then why does this requirement/discretion exist at all?

EDIT: Nevermind. There even seems to be a "SPAM TO 50" thread. At this point why not just remove the limit entirely?

Hi Josephus, thanks for joining in (and welcome to the forums)!

I appreciate your point regarding helping folk 'cheat' their way to the top, but what I'm more predominantly interested in, is helping people manage their public presence, or 'brand'. In the real world, business owners who start out with a real marketing budget will not likely be the individuals writing their content, their press releases, their public 'presence' - they'll be paying a copywriter or PR expert to do it for them.

Similarly, on the Silk Road I believe there is scope to encourage healthy market competition by making services like this available. Of course, these are just my thoughts and I'm glad you've dropped by with yours :-) +1 to you.
