Title: [FORUM] View Entire Thread
Post by: fatoldsun on October 20, 2012, 05:24 am
The Bitcoin Talk forum has an "All" view for forum threads, to see the entire thread on one page. Nice for longer threads.

An example: (clearnet!) https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=110817.0;all

I tried manually tweaking the uri, ei http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=33755.0;all

but alas, it does not work.

This would be a nice feature.

this indeed would be a nice feature. This WILL become a problem for large topics.
Would you want to wait while a thread with 300+ pages loads?

Yes, it is better than opening 300 pages to read. I would open such a thread and then read smaller ones while waiting. I have lots of ram though, others may feel differently. I imagine the software would have a hard limit at some point anyways.

Sometimes, I do... and then I want to have the option of waiting, not have to wait through 300 separate page loads. If you think about it, it actually takes MORE bandwidth to read a 300-page thread than it would to read the same thread on one page.

Any code-savvy people can suggest how to get this installed here?

Hover over the 'Profile' link near the top of this page.
Click on 'Account Settings'.
Click on 'Look and Layout' (which you'll find on the left hand side of the page under the "Modify Profile" title).
Change the 3rd last option of 'Message to display per page:' from 15 to 50.

That's the closest thing that we currently have to what you're looking for; it'll cut every 3.33 pages down into 1 page, so a topic with 10 pages of messages, for example, would be cut down to 3 pages, or a topic with 30 pages of messages would be cut down into 9 pages.

Not exactly what you had in mind, but I hope that helps you view the forum in a manner that you find preferable.

thanks grahamgreene,
that's a nice enough workaround.

OLDSCHOOL ALERT: Just click the 'Print' button in the upper right corner. You don't get the fun graphics or anything, but you'll get the whole thread in one place.

Increasing the 'Messages per page' count was frustrating to me when checking up on popular threads. I had to scroll though a lot of stuff I'd already read to get to the most recent stuff. I tried the 'recent replies at top' option to combat this, but it was too confusing.

I'm always impressed when the default options are the best options for me. It feels like the developers saying, "I got this, don't you worry your pretty little head."

It's a step in the right direction... thanks.

Graphics?

I have all the graphics I need right here in a nice little tab just waiting...
