The whole deal with streetc101 was hilarious. I laughed hard when I saw your new avatar for the first time.

Having said that...
Outing a member, as easy as it might have been, isn't something we want to do here. It weakens the community in many ways. We all deal with sensitive information about each other (packaging techniques, physical addresses, etc) and it is our responsibility to do what we can to keep everyone anonymous to the best of our abilities. I probably should have messaged you this when I saw your avatar.

Another way to look at it is that yes, there was a victim to your action. No one is allowed to make a victim out of someone else in the agora.

I saw some of this going on when vladimir dipped out. I don't know if that went unnoticed or not. Maybe it was ok because he fucked others over first? Could it be construed as some form of self defense in that case? I will have to chew on that for a moment.

Don't sweat it. So DPR made you walk the plank. Now you have a cool story, and hopefully learned something.

Gestalt,

You revealed someone's identity and your mad for getting banned?  IMO your lucky there wasn't large bounty paid to hackers to deanonymize you and post all your private shit on facebook.

Maybe there is more to the story, tell us what happened.  Until then I'll try not to think the worst.

What you're stating is actually just as bad as, if not worse than, outing someone on here. Well, that and the fact that if gestaltassault were following proper security procedures such a task would be nigh on impossible.

I don't know what happened, so I can't pass judgement on this person's actions. However, member's anonymity is the most important thing in this community, and those who break it will go to that special hell reserved for child molesters and people who speak during movies at the theater.

let me remind all of you that the member whose face i made into my avatar was trying to arrange meetings IRL with SR members to negotiate moving large volumes of drugs at "wholesale" prices...

not to mention that this member also came into this community bringing his "real hood nigga badass untouchable street dealer" attitude...

his real identity wasn't hard to find either...he blatently kept repeating that he was from VA Beach which made it easy to confirm the match between his handle and his youtube account where his wannabe rapper face was all over cheap poorly made amateur music videos...

the guy was a security risk to himself and the rest of the SR community...

And may I remind you, gestaltassault2, that anonymity is THE number one rule here. It doesn't matter what that person was doing; his anonymity is just as important as yours and mine. If there was evidence to suggest that he was doing as you say, the best course of action would have been to bring it to the attention of the people that can do something about it - namely the Administrators. This, in addition to a private message advising him of his security errors would have been a far more astute method of fixing the problem rather than plastering his face all over the Silk Road forums via your posts.

Members are welcome to come into this community bringing whatever attitude they wish, whether that be a "real hood nigga badass untouchable street dealer attitude" or one that is more palatable to you. It is an open, free community, but one in which anonymity is valued above all else. As a result of this being an open, free community you were of course free to go about it as you saw fit - however, that contravened the Golden Rule, thus your account was banned.

He was a security risk to himself, and to people who chose to buy from him (I'm presuming he was a vendor here, yes?)
However, it being a free market 'n all, they are free to buy from whomever they wish regardless of your views on the security risk he may represent to them. By all means do bring up vendor security issues with the appropriate people, but claiming that he "was a security risk to himself and the rest of the SR community" in order to somehow justify to yourself that what you did was okay is absurd; by doing what you did you ENSURED a security risk to himself and members who were doing business with him.

So few use their heads before they act, but so many would be so much better off if they did just that.

I PMed streetc101 a few weeks ago about some business, but even after sending him my public key, he sent plaintext messages about drugs and amounts and immediately offered to accept PayPal as payment. I dropped the convo after that. Somebody who is that loose about his security is going to get busted fast, and I can't imagine how shitty his packaging would be.
I'm telling you man...he's just a common street thug...

he lacks the intelligence and sophistication and yet he dreams of being some kinda bigshot kingpin like Tony Montana...

but he wasn't a vendor....he was just a fool who was trying to meet with SR members IN REAL LIFE...

i didn't plaster his face everywhere...i didn't even advertise the connection between his identity and my avatar much...

johnmtl and farmer1 can bear witness that i tried reasoning with the guy but that proved to be too mentally demanding for him...

ok so what i did was wrong...i won't do it again...now can i get my old account back?

I stand corrected on the vendor aspect, but I believe my point still stands about you ensuring a security risk as a result of your actions. Any SR member who met with in real life would have been a fool, and yes, in order to protect said fools these attempts to lure them out should have been reported; the course of action you took went far beyond that.  :-\

His face was plastered everywhere that one of your past posts appeared, regardless of whether you advertised the connection between his identity and your avatar only once or did it a thousand times.

Granted it does seem like you were trying to act in the best interests of the SR community in your own way, but tearing someone's anonymity to shreds certainly isn't the way to protect a community which holds anonymity in the highest regard.

How long have you been a member here, gestaltassault2? Your previous account, I mean.

Yeah I thought that thread was out of order. Yes the guy was asking a stupid question but he started out being polite and friendly. It was only when people started taking the piss out of him ( his spelling etc. which by the way was fine) that he got defensive. Y'all came across as a bunch of smug cliquey motherfuckers yo.
Posting his picture just struck me as against the principles of the community.

I would take issue with you on three points:

1)  Please know I am not proposing to expose anyone.  My comment was in the vein of, "you went to prison?  you're lucky you didn't get ass raped".  Doesn't mean I think anyone should ass raped.  Just means I think the consequences could have been worse.

2)  I think it's wrong to equate exposing someone here and child molesters.  I'm capable of killing people who hurt children.  You may be capable of killing someone for exposure but I would not be in support of that.

3)  It's not "nigh on impossible" for someone to find out who you are.  Throughout history and still today on the net, security is mostly about increasing the difficulty of penetration.   It's just a matter of how much time and money someone is willing to spend.  I choose to buy here because I have weighed the strength of my security against the motivation of others to find me.  Hence, best not to add to anyone's motivation if you can help it.

IMO your lucky there wasn't large bounty paid to hackers to deanonymize you and post all your private shit on facebook.

What you're stating is actually just as bad as, if not worse than, outing someone on here. Well, that and the fact that if gestaltassault were following proper security procedures such a task would be nigh on impossible.

1) Yes, the consequences could have been worse, but two wrongs don't make a right. I know you weren't advocating that someone expose gestaltassault, I was simply stating that the idea of doing so would be just as bad, if not worse than what he did.

2) a) Your morality and my morality differ somewhat in that you think it's okay to kill someone, whereas I do not, regardless of the circumstances. I'm capable of killing someone but I would not do it because it's not my place to do so, and I wouldn't be able to wipe such an act off my conscience.
b) I didn't equate exposing someone here to child molesting, I stated that "member's anonymity is the most important thing in this community, and those who break it will go to that special hell reserved for child molesters and people who speak during movies at the theater." I simply said that they'd go to the same special hell. Along with the people who speak during movies at the theater. I was quoting a character from the TV series "Firefly"; I don't believe in a "heaven" or a "hell".

3) No, it's not "nigh on impossible" for someone to find out who you are. That's not what I said. You keep taking everything out of context. I said that "if gestaltassault were following proper security procedures such a task would be nigh on impossible", which remains true. If he is following proper security procedures - which, incidentally I would also encourage you to look into - then, yes, it would be nigh on impossible to find out his personal details.

So what happened to the member who's identity was revealed?
He has to be pretty pretty stupid like dude was saying to use the same handle on here as he does for his everyday things like facebook.

SR is the ONLY place I use Hope2come and if it were ever searched you won't find anything even related to anything I would ever even consider thinking about...

I mean he should be banned too, right? If a member could so easily be found out LE could just as easily to a google search and link it to his YouTube then to FB...

After getting caught its only 1 step shy of working with LE to try and bring down SR or its vendors.. They could have him continue to try and meet ppl on SR and then bust them or have him order from vendors in the USA and figure out what city they are shipping from and then do some detective work and ask the PO about people who send a lot of the same package and then start busting vendors..

Something definitely needed to be done, Revealing his identity may not have been the best call, but I understand that it was a HUUUGE security risk. And SOMETHING should have been done..

1)  Great, then it looks like we are in agreement on this point.

2)  Again, not advocating killing people, just that I would be capable of it.  I'd also be capable of, and think about, banging a lot of hot people, but it's sometimes about restraint vs. desire.

3)  Actually I'm not taking you out of context at all.  My statement stands unqualified.  You could be found it people wanted to find you badly enough, regardless of what you've read here.

Not trying to scare people, just think it's healthy to know we are not invulnerable here, nor close to invulnerable.

Don't believe me, try this:  Go to an elite hacking forum, and post a hypothetical question, "what would be some good attacks to unmask an SR user?"

Bet you a dollar you'll hear some shit you've never even thought of.

First of all I believe you have the thread confused... he came out with an arrogant attitude like "wtf SR is supposed to be lower prices but you guys are all rip offs" or something to that affect.

none the less we at first were kind in our answers.. its only after he kept pushing the issue in his non spell checked typing that things got a little out of hand!

Revealing someones face in such a manner is a no go in evry criminal group, even on the internet.

This is like snitching to the Police and not very gentleman like my friend.

I think you can be happy that you are allowed on SR with a new acc and not got a perm. ban.

Respect the SR-community.

I agree with you on points 1 and 2. We'll get along famously on our sexual murder spree! (Or murderous sex spree, either or!)

3) I do still take issue with though.
I'm certainly not basing my statements on anything that I've read here; I don't trust anything I read here until I back it up with my own research on the subject, and I would advise everybody here to operate with the same mindset. I'm basing my statements on my own experience and research of the methods I use, including their potential vulnerabilities, before I use them.

You're more than right, we are certainly not invulnerable here! There is definitely a lot of 'low hanging fruit' here that could be picked off with ease. However, I take my security very seriously, and many others do the same.
I said it is 'nigh on impossible' to find someone when they're following proper security procedures. Nothing is impossible. Many things are implausible, but nothing is impossible. "Nigh on impossible" literally means "near impossible", not "impossible" in an absolute sense.

I'm not a betting man, but if I were you would be getting your dollar - there is always going to be some people who attack problems in new and innovative ways. Indeed that is what drives advances in technology and science.
Were I to ask the question you posed of people with far more knowledge than I on the subject then I would certainly hear some techniques I've never heard of, but given that I don't just utilise my own security procedures, I research the procedures others are using and work them into my security setup if they are sound, I'm very well hidden from any who would wish to uncover my identity.

The only potential security flaw that is a real threat to my security at the moment is 3 different vendors who have received my personal information for a very low single digit number of purchases of prescription drugs, and one legal product. If they're following the rules, then that personal information is gone. There is of course every chance that they're not following the rules, though I'm not worried about being unmasked for such small orders.

I suppose in conclusion the only thing to state is that we are all only as secure as we make ourselves. Many implement 'security blanket' security procedures which make them FEEL safe, but in reality do absolutely nothing to protect them. I like to count myself among those who take my security a lot more seriously than that by constantly reading up on new techniques, new potential vulnerabilities with the programs and techniques I am using and implementing what works for others after researching the method thoroughly myself.

I'm not a paranoid person by nature, but just because I'm not paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.  :P

Guru

God has it been that long?  Also, just noticed, Youpi is wearing a Habs jersey!  <Priceless>

Yes sir.. Its been that long... to be honest I lost my love for the expos in the early-mid 90's, due in part to the team sucking and weed coming into my life...

As for the best team to ever play hockey, My wonderful Habs...

My love for them will never die.. even during the last 15 or so years when they sucked I still love them to death, I think its something inside all of us from this great city.. Its like a wicked genetic defect but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Also just a tidbit of info .. when the expos moved to Washington left youppui homeless, so since then he has become the official mascot of the Habs and now lives forever with the best team to play the game!!!  :)  :)  :)

All in all I'm a happy guy, I still have my Habs and I still have youppi!

That explains the jersey, then. I didn't know that.  I'm not a great hockey fan, but I'll always support the Habs. I'm old enough to remember the "glory years" when it was said that, "The Stanley Cup parade will take its traditional route though the city."  The only year that stands out was Centennial Year, when the Toronto Maple Laughs won the Stanley Cup.  I remember being really disappointed that Les Canadiens didn't win it that year, but I suppose that we had Expo67, and all that.

One of my brothers-in-law is a die-hard Maple Leafs fan, and I never tire of teasing him about how he supports such perpetual losers.  It's 45 years this year, since the Leafs last won the Stanley Cup. That was at the start of my brother-in-law's working life... he's retired now, just turned 65. There is little doubt in my mind that we'll both be dead of natural causes before either of us sees another Stanley Cup win by the Leafs.

LOL.. at least he never gave up hope your bro-in-law.. thats some determination if you ask me... I just dont understand how you can root for a team that has not won a Stanley Cup since 67.... I'll tell you something... its because of people like your bro in  law and I that hockey rocks!!!!!  without us diehards it would just be another game!

I love going to the mtl VS tor games.. its my favorite match-up..well second... bruins are number one!
