Title: Are old bitcoin addresses valid?
Post by: elmergantry on September 14, 2012, 02:45 pm
Hi everybody. I just deposited a few bitcoins to an old address associated with my silkroad account and I'm still waiting for it to show up. Do old bitcoin addresses still work (they used to)? I've looked it up on blockchain.info but I can't make sense of the information. Many thanks.

Well, it's been 2 hours and it's not shown up, I did another transfer at the same time (different website) and that worked fine (showed up an hour later). Damn I'll be so annoyed if this has disappeared or gone awol. Please can someone help.

Hello,

Yes, old bitcoin addresses in SR stay valid, you will get your coins and a message which tells you not use this old address again.

Thanks for that WL I'll try and be a little more patient.

This waiting is killing me, WL are you saying that it would take longer because it's an old address, or not? Thanks.

Update: it's been roughly 4 and a half hours and still no show. It's only 2 bitcoins roughly but I need it to complete a purchase. It's 29 confirmations (if that's significant) and counting - http://blockchain.info/address/1PTCosSct7FTNGKBGvK18ZwnW1EN7NR4H3

It's now 6 hours (the max time mentioned in the buyer's guide) and it's not turned up so I've emailed sr support.

10 hours. For the time being I would advise everybody to send only to the address actually shown in your account.

What does blockchain say? Unconfirmed or x Confirmations?

It says 62 confirmations! I can't be sure but I think it's because I used an old address. If you read this sr please can you get on it for me, thank you.

I am having the same issue - used an old address and missing the bitcoins despite 500+ confirmations.  I deposited over 3 days ago as well .

Hi phunky, mine got sorted out last night along by sr admin, have you contacted silk road yet? If you do, be sure to tell them the address concerned and the missing amount, hopefully it'll get sorted out for you soon.

Hi elmergantry,

Yes, old Bitcoin addresses for the same wallet to still work for receiving coins, and in theory, the ones for SR should work too. In reality, that doesn't seem to be the case. They used to, back when I first started using the site, but there seems to be problems with it now.

Hit 'new address' before transferring your coins in future and there should be no problems.

Thanks for that, I learnt the hard way though. Still, I managed to get my order in before it sold out so it's all okay in the end.
