Title: Possible Scam? Vendor has 18 transactions and 18 fans?
Post by: maryjosephjesus on September 11, 2012, 01:53 am
I'm brand new here, trying to get the feel and everything.

I just ordered an ID from some vendor (not accusing or releasing a name, this is a general question) . He's a month or so old.
So far, I've read some positive reviews of him. But, this is fishy: He has 18 transactions, 18 5/5s, and 18 fans. This smells like a scam. I will be not happy if I got burned. I did not finalize early.
I have faith in Ted, maybe everyone just fell in love with him, but I'm feeling quite queasy.... any advice?

I understand that you are new, but you need actual evidence to back up a scam claim.

There is nothing wrong with a vender having 18 successful transactions that just means he is a good vender.

I really didn't mean for this to sound accusatory. I have no evidence that he is a scammer at all, I placed the order a few hours ago and I don't expect to hear from a few days.

I guess I'm asking in general. I know 18/18 transactions is fine, and a good sign. But all 18 purchasers become a fan?

That's all. I'll take his name out of the OP since it has less to do with him, and more of a general question about vendor profiles and possible fake reviews.

THx for your assistance.

You may be on to something.
Check the forums for reviews.
18 sales, should get a review from somebody with more creds than you.

Trust your instinct, we were all new.
We/Most of us have been scammed. :'(
Nothing wrong with asking.

Trust your instinct ;)

Seeing as you neglected to take his name out of your original post, I feel it's important to link to his thread here: http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=35469.msg418626#msg418626
BlarghRawr received a sample ID, and everything seemed to check out. You didn't Finalize Early so you should be just fine (vendors with under 35 transactions and less than a month on the Road are prohibited from asking buyers to FE anyway.)
There is also another thread concerning him here: http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=38579.msg433299#msg433299

As far as fans go, you don't have to have bought something from him to become a fan. It may have seemed a bit odd that he had 18 transactions, 18 5/5's and 18 fans but seeing as he has the equipment to make quality fake ID's, I see no reason for him to not to run a legitimate business. I would imagine it was just an unusual coincidence.

In any case he currently has 21 transactions and 19 fans, with one 4/5 and a couple of criticisms about computer generated signatures.

It's possible from the unusual number of custom listings for a new vendor that there is a little faked feedback (just as it is possible for any vendor to fake feedback) but there is no proof of this. All in all, from the looks of it I'd say you're pretty safe.

It's quite common for new vendors to have more fans than sales, buyers ofter become a fan without ordering in case the seller goes into stealth mode, or so they can quickly find the seller again :)
