I don't understand the point of pgp for the SR...
I understand in regards to higher security, but do people proceed with transactions without pgp with no problem?
If SR is already secure, shouldn't that be enough?
Also, if a 3rd party can crack SR's security, couldn't they crack the security offered through pgp?

The point of using PGP for Silk Road transactions is a) in case the server comes into the hands of LE in the future, b) to protect against the possibility that that is already the case and SR is a honeypot, and c) if your vendor comes to the attention of LE and they seize his computer, your details aren't available to the police without the vendor's passphrase.
You assume that SR is secure. Why?
You must always assume that the entire system is insecure, as even if it isn't now (which we have no way of actually knowing), it may well be in the future.
As for the security of PGP, I'll let somebody far more knowledgeable than I chime in there, but in short PGP is currently seen as generally 'uncrackable'.
