Title: BTC $18.65?
Post by: uniwiz on July 31, 2012, 12:55 am
Looked at my account, and couldn't believe it.

Then went to purchase, $18.65 per BTC.
I started buying as much as I could ;)

Just kidding, whats up?
Thanks SR!!!

I noticed it too, had twice what i expected.  I am tempted to buy but don't want to screw a vendor out of money.

Yeah I just got on here to ask about that. The cash value listed at the top of the account page is different then what is available. I don't like that there seems to be a problem of some sort with my money totals.

Go look at the money in your account. The cash value and the amount of available BTC are way off and keep moving around

If you're a good sport, you won't buy anything until this is all taken care of. As it is I imagine that every vendor will cancel any order that comes through until this is all blown over, so don't waste your time.

if they're paying for the hedge sr admin will take the L not them, so why would they care?

I guarantee that all the orders made during these troubles will be cancelled. Obviously SR-vendor relations have to be good so why would vendors even attempt that. I look down on anybody  who attempts to take advantage of this. Almost everything on SR is very fairly priced.

I happen to just send a bunch of BTC to my SR account to make some purchases. Upon refreshing the page I noticed my balanced was updated and I went and placed a few orders... all hedged.

Then I looked at my account history, the BTC I sent havent even arrived yet.

This is going to make me lose so much money if each of these vendors cancel my orders. A vendor canceled my (hedged) order earlier and I lost $100 as a result..... If my recent orders get canceled... then im down the drain $400 possibly

I would urge all users to hold off on transactions until we figure out what's going out with btc-e. I would also urge those of you with coins at btc-e to withdraw them IMMEDIATELY, and not to make any transactions there. GreenGiant, were you able to withdraw your USD??

This is clearly a btc-e hack. Secure your coins right now, if at all possible.

I would say it is completely unsafe to do anything regarding BTC right now. Over at MtGox I sold all the BTC I had because the price hasn't changed since I bought them, so I'd rather know I have the USD in case a crash happens...

64K bitcoins, about the amount that was purchased for about a million dollars which is what drove up the value, has been transferred. Shannon implies, perhaps correctly, that this is a sign that this recent valuation-alteration is going to last.

At MtGox the price is still the same. Do you think this is a good time to buy? Will the price be going up in the next day or two because of this? I've never done the whole trading for the sake of trading thing, but if this is worthwhile I'll do it.

Hold off on all transactions folks, and I doubt there's enough USD at btc-e to fill transactions. BTC withdrawals aren't working there at the moment, so I think it's safe to assume that anything held at btc-e is now lost.

If i have orders waiting to be sent out, not marked in transit and not finalised, where does this leave me.

It looks like the prices are now less than half price. If i cancel these orders what happens to me and the buyer?

It will have to return to normal at some point because the spike was artificial so there is no substance to keep it in place. Compare it to the bond market crash, what is likely to happen is that this will cripple BTC-e and kill it altogether like Bear Stearns because there ill be no confidence in it any more.

Makes you think, are the other exchanges playing with loaded dice and bent decks?

Well it may be time to play the exchange game..... If you can sell your bitcoins on btc-e for $30 and buy them on mtgox for $9... this looks like an opportunity. The only down side is that it's taking 1 hour to crack the last bitcoin block :( so it would be time consuming to go back and forth. Hope it last long enough for me to double or quadruple my money.

anonaddict DO NOT DO THIS! Any BTC you put into btc-e is going into the hotwallet - the hotwallet was cleaned out by the hacker, but he/she can still withdraw any BTC put into it whilst they have control. They're using fake USD to buy up coins (by adjusting their USD balance), so you'll lose your coins and you'll receive imaginary USD.

I wouldn't try to deposit anything to BTC-E. You will lose it. The only person who is going to make out is the guy who purchases BTC with a fake 1 mil note. Once he gets his BTC out of BTC-E and into another exchange they will be able to sell them off at around 9 a BTC still pulling in some big change. All the specs at BTC-E are about to get burned.

BTC-E is so backed up, if you had money in there you should get ready to forget about that coin. People have been trying to pull out tenths of bits for hours and still nothing. That site is gone with the wind I think. There is no way to say that the site didn't do it. All they would have to do is move the market value up to 40 bucks say they got hacked clog up their own system with the news and take the coin. That is the one problem with bitcoin. No one governs it, the people running these trading sites have no one to answer to. They can do whatever they want.

Yeah, it's been weird.  About a 1/4 of what should have been in my wallet appeared a few hours ago and all of it disappeared about an hour ago.

The weird thing is at first glance, it looks legit, but i the bitcoin people are saying that it has to be a btc-e hack... why cant sites get really good security??? Something is wrong...

BTC-E got hacked or it was an inside job and did another bitcoinica or whatever.. It all comes down to your own security... Dont put your coin where you CANT control it... Im guessing that there will be some official "Bitcoin" governing body soon, these scams just dont stop.. it will destroy the bitcoin before it gets going... Something has to be done about these scams..

Some do have the right security. I don't know why others wouldn't want to as well. Is it the cost or is it that some day they plan to "cashout" like tradehill. It sure makes for an easy escape and people who are used to this crap just go "oh well" and rightfully so, the anonymous currency is that way for a reason. Who are these people going to go after?  I use campbx.com, simply for their security.

btc-e always looked insecure and low quality... it was only a matter of time before it got hacked.

Not really sure what happened as I don't understand the whole btc thing very well. I just saw that the value of my btc doubled. I thought the price in btc just rose drastically and didn't know it was a hack so I made 2 large purchases, one hedged and one not hedged. Anybody know what will happen now? What will happen if my orders are cancelled? I guess I should have checked here before I bought.
The unhedged one might get cancelled, but you'll get your funds back. The hedged one is more likely to go through, as hedging is meant to protect from things like this. But really, it's a toss up.

There's people on their forum complaining that they can't withdraw their 0.9865 BTC or whatever and I can't find my actual transaction in the blockchain. I placed a small hedged order on Silk Road in the confusion that I hope SR staff let slide because I would just break even. I didn't mean anything dishonest, I assumed it was a run on the market so I acted on it. Man this sucks. I hate bitcoins. Stupid unregulated currency.

The hackers injected faked USD into BTC-e then purchased BTC with that. They also cleaned out btc-e's wallet and any incoming deposits from people tryin to make a quick buck from the spike (GreenGiant ;) lol )

I Just checked the block chain and a shit ton of coins just went thru with 9 confirmations.... I would secure all your bitcoins and if you have a btc-e account try to get them out.. This is going to have very bad ramifications to the bitcoin and a lot of people on bitc-e hopefully didnt lose a lot.. it all depends if they had coins in cold storage or not.. Im not that technical, but this isnt good at all...

...This is going to have very bad ramifications to the bitcoin...

To be honest I don't think this will affect Bitcoin all that much; it's likely the hacker only got away with around 10,000 BTC - an amount that would have completely destabilised the market a year ago, but judging from recent hacks and Bitcoin 'disasters', security issues of such a small amount don't even dent the market anymore. Bitcoin will be just fine, prices will fluctuate as they normally do, and all will stabilise in a couple of days. No worries!  :)

I can't find my transaction in the blockchain and I have a feeling anyone dumb enough to send their coins to BTC-e got ripped off for trying to be greedy and buy coins at $9 at Mt. Gox and sell them at around $40 at BTC-e.

I think I might have been fucked out of ~$200. Man this sucks.

Hey EnterTheMatrix,

There was a BTC withdrawal limit of 2,000 BTC per 24 hour period. Apparently the "hacker" used fake Liberty Reserve USD to buy Bitcoin, so it looks as though it was only 2,000 BTC stolen.

This post from "BkkCoins" over at bitcointalk.org (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=96802.280) explains what is now likely to happen:

Quote
They can reverse all the trades and restore balance to pre-hack time. But they will not be able to give back BTC that have been withdrawn. So either they make good and buy it in the market, or they say tough luck and customers lose. I expect they'll reverse everything and then see how much BTC they would need to buy. And at that point they'll decide who loses.

So my earlier estimate of 10,000 BTC and QuikMart's estimate of 187,000 BTC were both well off the mark.

There was a post from DPR on what the SR admins are doing earlier in the thread, skip back and read that first.  One of the things they have done is fixed the exchage rate to $9.00 USD until things settle, but there is more work being done.

Anyway, go read what DPR has to say and then make a decision.  DPR's post is here:

Dear users of the Exchange Btc-e.com

The exchange is not going to close. We will refund all losses from our reserves.

Neither the servers nor the database were compromised. There were no SQL injections.

At 04:07 MSK (GMT+4) our LR API Secret Key was compromised. It's 16 uppercase, lowercase letters and digits. They may have bruteforced it for long.

Using the key the hacker imitated LR deposits from many accounts and bought up Bitcoins, Namecoins and Litecoins.

We lost our daily volume, approx. 4500 BTC. The attacker couldn't withdraw more
as most BTC were distributed over several offline wallets.

At 10:30 we restored the database to the state it was at 04:00, right before the attack. All trades after 4:00 are reverted.

People who attempted withdrawals before 04:00 MSK will get their funds withdrawn later today.

For people who deposited BTC, LTC and NMC after 04:00 MSK the funds will be put to their balances before market opens.
We are working on the scripts for this.

If you deposited USD after 04:00 MSK you should send us your login, amount and payment system used by email or PM.

Not a good idea.
