Title: Tutorial for SR (Secure OS, GPG, bitcoins, tips, useful tools, etc)
Post by: v01d on January 17, 2012, 11:16 am
Just a tutorial  I wrote up after seeing so many people asking the same questions.

Download the .doc with the original format:
http://xqz3u5drneuzhaeo.onion/users/qicpic/files/4.doc

For those wary of downloading and running any file here is the pastebin:

qPasteBin(no format):
http://4eiruntyxxbgfv7o.onion/paste/show.php?id=fcc21f55e8225274

Edit:
Also might want to change your desktop address each time you send BTC to an instawallet as well.
Visit each instawallet under a new tor identity.

Excellent guide particularly re: the buying tips. The SR wiki is a bit spare at the moment it seems.

Excellent work! Thanks for putting in the time and effort to write it all up!

This needs to be stickied for our newer users!  :)

Throw up an addy so some of us can send you some BTC for your troubles if we feel that way inclined!  :)

This is a great guide! Could you post on how to set up proper disk encryption on the usb?

This is a great guide! Could you post on how to set up proper disk encryption on the usb?
Could you be more specific? The ~/persist is already encrypted so anything you save to it is already encrypted.
If you want just a general encrypted USB, grab truecrypt:
http://www.truecrypt.org/

Hit "Create volume"

Select Encrypt a non-system partition/drive (if you want to use the whole thing, which I recommend.)

Make a hidden TrueCrypt container.

Normal mode

Select device

Next.

Select what encryption algorithym and hash you want.

Verify that is the correct size.

Create the outer volume password. Make it something decent easy, but still believable to be a password. l0$t_s3cr3t$ or something like that. Make it easy to remember. You might have to give it up if caught.

Select no for storing large files.

Move your mouse around for about a minute.

Hit format and confirm that's what you want to do.

When it's done hit "open outer container" and fill it with non-critical but data you'd seemingly want to hide. Use creativity. Shemale porn, bank passwords, nudes, whatever.

Hit next to continue on.

Next again.

Select encryption and hash for your actual hidden volume.

Select size. Go for the highest you can.

Create as best a password as you can. Long, random, and easily rememberable by you.

Select yes or no to storing large files.

Move your mouse around for as long as you can. For a few minutes at least to build up the encryption.

Format.

You are done.

--------------Tip
Try not to add to the outside container after it's formed without leaving ample room for it.
If you give up your outer password, seem hesitant and beaten. As if it is your last straw.

I have tried all day, and I can't get your links to load. Either of them. Hasn't been very helpful at all. Hours upon hours of trying. What gives?

I was able to use the qPastebin link just recently.

Great guide v01d. Thanks for writing it!

Also, maybe the text should be mirrored in this forum thread, and also on the SR wiki.

Both links seem to be up for me.

This may be an inane inquiry, but is it safe to download TrueCrypt?  I'm using the Tor Browser Bundle and when I click download it highly recommends I do not use external applications as they can unmask you.  I'm going to guess it's fine because of the source.

You're probably fine just downloading TrueCrypt outside of TOR in your regular web browser.

Nice guide. Its brief and its free of unnecessary biases. Definitely enough to get a person up and functional without getting lost in the details.

TrueCrypt seems to be the defacto standard these days.   There is nothing wrong (illegal) with having encryption, so there is no reason to worry (IMO) about downloading it outside of Tor.

Is there a way to store links and passwords on liberte without using trucrypt?
I mean you do need some addresses and links saved to access them from that Linux OS.
can you install truecrypt on liberte?
how does it work :D
also if i've already used my PC to use silk road is there a way to erase tracks without formatting?

I think liberte comes with standard linux encryption, don't have to use truecrypt.
http://dee.su/liberte-documentation

Otherwise just download truecrypt .tar.gz file off their website every time, expand to desktop and double click to install. Or keep it on a USB drive beside your encrypted container (that has a decoy container of course). If I remember correctly you only have something like 4 minutes to use root until it locks out, so USB with Truecrypt debian installer on it best way to go.

I know Tails you just press tab when it's at the language selection screen, and type "truecrypt" then hit enter to boot and it will be available. No idea never used Liberte besides checking it out a few times.

If we use Truecrypt to encrypt a usb can we still access the usb in tails? like do we need a special version of Truecrpt made for the tails OS?
