Suppose you wanted to move 3LBS of recently dried/cured/stinky bud from 1 state in the west to another state in the midwest. Total distance, about 1000 miles. What method would you use and why? Everyone involved are old friends, so no problems with trust, only transport. Any recommendations?

If you cannot get someone to drive it for you, my guess is USPS priority. No signatures. Vac sealed and well packaged and disguised.
Up in Canada I have a friend who would fly out to the west coast, choose the batches he wanted (usually 6-8lbs), then split them and have them shipped Canada Post priority. He did this for years. He did lose one shipment however due to some sort of screw up.
Wait a bit, I am sure other members will have some other ides.

3lbs is about 1kg, talking about weed I can only imagine it's a buttload!
I'm more experienced in smuggling smaller quantities, and I am not from the US, but I think the "big ideas" should apply nevertheless:
You can trust your friends, but you cannot trust their reactions in the (unlikely) event you face police/customs... I mean it isn't what you are doing that really matters, but more what you "look like you'r doing". If someone starts behaving strange or shows fear, this could "tick" the policeman into thinking there might be a reason for him to check you. I recommend not telling anyone, or telling them you'v taken care of it with mail/someone else, so they aren't stressing at all about being checked. The idea is to look like the average person, like the "mass".
Make sure your car is clean, outside and inside, and be well dressed. Avoid any gangsta/frat stuff, or basically anything out of the ordinary. Obviously respect all driving limitations, and try to stay with a big flow of car, aim to pass critical spots in high peak hours. Again, the idea is to look and act like the average person.
As for transportation, as I said it's a lot! Not many options. First make sure your packets are absolutely vacuum sealed and not carrying any odor on the other side as well. I mean, if you'v touched some weed, it's on your finger. If with this finger you touch the plastic, it's on the plastic - and that mini tiny bit is enough to be detected by a trained dog: wash your fingers before, during and after (full 1 minute thorough washing).
Now with your presumed safe packets, I think you basically have 2 non-professional options: in some sport bag with the rest of your luggage, or *inside* the tire of your safety tire (not in the spot of the wheel, but inside the tire of that wheel)...
Good luck, risks are very, very low, but consequences are very, very hard, so think twice -could be easier/safer to sell where you are and rebuy where you go!

i would vaccume seal it and jump on a grey hound or train (i have never had bag search on amtrak) not sure about the bus. if you drive it make sure your car is legit to max, all lights work and obey all rules

If you're driving a car, be sure it has no bumper stickers or identifying marks of any kind (sans the license plate). Even an air freshener has aroused suspicion of the pigs in some cases. Make sure your hair is well kept and not too long, and dress professionally or with average casual wear. If you have any tattoos, it will help to cover them up if possible.
Think about what they've been training us to do since kindergarten: sit down, shutup, and don't stand out. Even non threatening things like an "I'm proud of my kid" bumper sticker will cause you to be more noticeable.
Also know your civil rights. If a pig asks to search your vehicle, politely decline. Even if he persists and threatens you, stand firm. Do not consent to any searches without probable cause or warrant. You are not required to assist the police in their investigation, so don't! Only tell the police the minimal amount of information you need to and then be quiet. Do not engage in small talk or argument. This gives the cop something to work with in their investigation. If you remain silent, it shuts them down. Most people don't know how to react when somebody refuses to speak with them.

if your really paranoid do what cocaine cow boys did, they bought a tow truck (the kind the car goes all the way up on a flat bed) and put the drugs in the car and had someone drive the tow truck to where ever it needed to go. :P

Best idea would probably be to seriously think again about doing this.
Send it in 3-6 ounce priority envelopes or something over a period of time. No reason to be a hero driving around with enough weed to land you in pound me in the ass prison.

dance4life has a point, people ship qp's without problem it seems. Remember running drugs between states becomes federal, no good time and if you get caught in a conservative state (any non west coast or denver) your fucked

If you're going to drive it, also be aware of what states you go through. Some states are worse than others, if you do happen to get caught.
And for the love of god, make sure all the lights work properly on your car and that you wont have to worry about it breaking down anywhere.
I'd also avoid driving at night. With fewer cars on the road... your car becomes a bigger target.
