The stuff they soak a rag in and put it over people's mouth's to make them pass out in the movies??

What's it's recreational use? Unconsciousness?

(Sorry for n00b question!)

This goes for both ether and chloroform: The way it's depicted in the movies is bullshit ^^, Yes, you CAN pass out from it, but you need to take at least half a dozen deep breaths, before shit gets out of hand. And a few more to pass out. Don't use a rag though, it's a huge mess and waste... just huff it straight out of the bottle, like poppers! :)
I personally prefer chloroform over ether any day, but that unfortunately is even harder to get :( Ether feels closest to booze, while chloroform (at least in small to medium doses) mostly reminds me of laughing gas.

When making ether, be sure to cool the product with ice water and make sure your still doesn't leak and place it in a ventilated area. Ether is highly flammable and can ignite and even detonate if it touches a hot enough surface, such as a hotplate. Same goes for the ethanol used to make it.

I think it is stupid to make something like this when you can easily find it. It is not illegal. With a little search you can find it. It is quite interesting that if it isnt stored well it may convert to phosgene. And anyway i think chloroform isnt the best for someones health....

There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff soon.

Ah, devil ether. It makes you behave like the village drunkard in some early Irish novel. Total loss of all basic motor function. Blurred vision, no balance, numb tongue. The mind recoils in horror, unable to communicate with the spinal column. Which is interesting because you can actually watch yourself behaving in this terrible way, but you can't control it. :P

Lol I remember I jacked a whole bottle of petroleum ether from my home room in like 11th grade (my hr teacher was the biology lady)-- stuffed it right in my bookbag; I couldn't wait to try it so I took it right down to my locker, poured some on an old t-shirt I had and inhaled-- fckn intense meng!  I carried that bottle with me everywhere for the next three days or so... taking it to my friends houses so they could try it, I had it in the barbershop and was huffing well the lady was cutting my hair (we even found an old American flag to use, just like fear and loathing!)

Shit makes you trip out man, a bit like duster I would say, but better.  I'd never do it again, its gotta be terrible for you, for your brain anyways.  But yup I was on an ether binge for a minute there.

Holy shit, how old are you kids? 13?

First things first: Petroleum Ether is not Ether.  Ether, chemically speaking, is diethyl ether (CH3CH2-O-CH2CH3).  Petroleum ether is a flammable liquid most closely related to kerosene or gasoline.

Second, huffing chloroform is probably the STUPIDEST thing you can do.  People stopped using it labs for the most part because its KNOWN TO CAUSE CANCER.  Even in LABS where people use fume hoods, the minute quantities around are cancerous.  What do you think happens when you're huffing the shit straight from a bottle?

Come on. Who doesnt know it and is here?? Those must be banned :P

As for petroleum ether i noticed but i believe it is a just small name mistake.

For chloroform, it is still used everywhere and in many things. And since when someone who wanted to be high really thinked about his safety? And solvents always were the worst for brains.... But you trying to tell me that someone who tried chloroform is more at risk from someone who tries meth? come on...
