I really hate what has been going on the dark-net drug markets recently!

I hear ya man it's been one shit storm after another.  It's crazy how much shit we have to go through compared to say a year ago.  It all started this past summer with tor mail going down and then the feds imaging the SR server and that tor browser exploit.  Then there was sr 1 going down, sheep scam, bmr v3 hacked, sr 2 now under attack.  Not to mention bitcoin volatility and having to worry about bitcoins getting stolen.  Sometimes I lay down ripped off my ass and just dream about the good old days when we were flying way under the radar.  I swear I've aged 10 years in the past 6 months!

We believe we know who is behind the attack too and I want to ensure this is well known - we do not negotiate with people trying to harm our market because we will overcome it eventually. To the people behind this attack I will only give one warning that if this continues then we will return the favor starting with your database which we already now hold - false promises and tall claims cannot fool us because lying though your teeth about your "security" is easily exposed. Yeah I was just trying to keep an open mind but I think Bob probably knows.  They're probably demanding a bitcoin ransom.  I didn't realize how rampant that shit is.  I read a news article the other day where a police station in the US actually paid a bitcoin ransom to retrieve some data!

I believe he really knows who are behind this, I highly doubt DPR would write that down without the knowledge.  This ain't some game ...

If Tormarket is behind this, it would sort of fit perfectly to the bill.  I personally believe the site is a scam operation, and in coming months it will become clear ...  Then again I believe the same about Pandora, not going to go here into details why I believe this of these two sites ...

If one thinks about this, only a scam marketplace would be behind this , otherwise it makes zero sense. Backopy had to take BMR down because traffic was getting too high for one site to function under TOR. We need several trusted marketplaces to work for this idea of black marketplaces truly to function. 

If legit marketplace would be behind this it would be like they were shooting themselves in the leg...  but then again if your plan is to scam as much as possible you don't mind drawing in more people you can handle, more in the escrow, better the scam. And hey then you can always try to blame it on the TOR failing on you...

This is all speculation naturally, really hope it will be released what site is behind this.

I really hope this isn't the same person who hacked BMR. That attack started with a DDoS and then coins started to go missing. After the BMR attack though, DPR stated he made some changes to prevent this type of attack, and that our coins would be safe, even if a hacker somehow gained control of the server.

So, I'm not too worried

But please, be careful DPR, and don't hesitate to shut the site down temporarily until this gets sorted out, if you feel it is at all necessary.

One way to easily throw off a DDOS attack (at least for sr) is have multiple website names that you use, as soon as they attack one change to the other, that way they have to constantly monitor it or split up their botfarm.  Your customers know all the website names and can try each one until they find the one that is currently working.

Unfortunately, this doesn't appear to be an amateur attack as DPR has stated they are using a different DDoS attack method, such HTTP GET request, ICMP Flood, Layer 7 Attack, etc. This implies that the attack is distributed over a series of infected computers (ala DDoS) making it near-impossible to identify any "main IP" as each PC has a unique IP.

Aside from beefing up site security (in terms of DDoS mitigation techniques), DPR should tackle the root of the problem and annihilate the enemy

The total market cap is what now, 11 billion or so??  The US government prints that in 2 days.  It the higher powers are so "threatened" by this crypto-currency you would think they would want to buy as much up of a FINITE currency as they can and then have virtual control over it given they own the majority of it.  This is one of the most vulnerable elements of this whole BTC thing in my mind.

The attack on the server could be stopped by simply de-registering Silk Road 2.0 as a hidden service on the tor network.
No where for the packets to go.

The problem is letting the customers connect needs the server to be registered and I doubt simply creating a new url will buy that much time.

For why your getting an error message. That's simple.
There is enough bandwidth to route the whole DDOS to the server.

The web server however needs more CPU time than current available to process your request (due to the thousands of fake requests per second from the DDOS attack). Hence you get an error message instead.

I've never coded a RAT with those capabilities, but in my mind it would certainly be possible. First, all of your zombies would have to be able to send HTTP requests through TOR; secondly, you wouldn't be able to attack the server it's self but rather the domain and allow it to resolve that way. What in that wouldn't work?

Firstly I'd like to apologize for the lack of clarity in recent days regarding the situation but things have been chaotic for us. At the moment Silk Road is experiencing a DDOS attack and we are working to resolve it as it is not the same type that caused the downtime of the original market last year.

We believe we know who is behind the attack too and I want to ensure this is well known - we do not negotiate with people trying to harm our market because we will overcome it eventually. To the people behind this attack I will only give one warning that if this continues then we will return the favor starting with your database which we already now hold - false promises and tall claims cannot fool us because lying though your teeth about your "security" is easily exposed. We like competition, but if you want to take jealously out on this community then I will not sit by idly.

UPDATE: I have taken the site offline and it should now redirect you to the maint.html page. We will be checking the market for the next few hours to ensure nothing has happened during the DDOS to mask other issues and once everything is given the all clear we will re-open it to everyone.

I agree i mentioned it before about switching url to another that mirrors the severs, I am sure i read somewhere they have servers in 500 locations , so it would not go down , but it would appear they have been brought down very easily IMO , by a group of hackers , normally though would the hackers come out and say we are responsible etc .

However i do know only too well how hard all the SRv2 team working to get this out again , it is only 1 month old and these bugs unfortunately are to be expected , maybe they will change the shut down dates to 24 - 28 th to compensate. As you said a lot of folk want to place Xmas orders. I do not want to go into order via email too much of a trail, plus sr can ban us .

My understanding is that child porn is not allowed in SR.  But is it true that lately this hasn't been monitored effectively ? 
If it's true I really hope one of the moderators makes this one of his/hers first priorities. If i understand how SR does its BTC price, the site got taken completely offline AFTER the huge drop in BTC price. So SR was not online constantly adjusting price to makeup for price drop.

So now he has all of the SR BTC that have not been adjusted for the rise back to $950. If DPR brought SR online and made all right he would loose alot of cash.

 Look during the downtime I did some reading. I love this board and I will do a lot to protect it. I was suspected that the first ddos track on silk road 1.0 was in fact made by law enforcement to discover the root locations of the server. I'm afraid the same thing might have happened here.
You see you disable or tie up a majority of the networks servers than with a little bit of detective work your able to find the root locations of where the transmission is coming from. This is not exactly legal but the government has ways around this also. You find a firm or a company to do it with you or for you that way you don't dirty your hands.

Well do what you want but buying bitcoin even if you don't spend them is a good idea, especially after it tanked last weekend.  The human psychology is that a lot of people are going to panic and sell their bitcoin when it tanks like it did last weekend.  But I learned my lesson before having panic sold and then buying back in higher because the price rebounds.  So this time around I was able to scoop up cheap coins on the downswing and low and behold bitcoin has gone up a couple hundred dollars since last weekend.  We're knocking on the door of $1000 and already passed it at gox today so just buy the bitcoins and if you don't get a chance to spend them on here just sell them for a profit or hold onto them for the long term to see if you can make a killing.  Don't hold on to your inflating dollar bills.

Was this information read from the white paper on Cell Flooding? 
 If so, I wouldn't worry to much.
This was a targeted attack, it was not an attack of "the onion router".

Although traffic was increased over the tor network during this attack, it was not increased to the point of observable slow down/ DOS.
 An effort to cripple the onion network as we have seen before would have resulted in most .onion pages to load slowly when in fact the majority of the network was running well within tolerance.

All of the research I have done over the past 24 hours has not shown the tor network itself to be specifically under attack., which would be a method of forcing connections through slower relays and thus increasing profiling potential.

I believe, per previous DPR posts, that they needed to do tests live with the site, hence the occasional access to the site, in order to expose any possible holes in the infrastructure. Every time the open SR back up they are looking for any oddities in the over all scripts, finding them, and eradicating them to not have security issues. This could take a few hours (lets pray) or it could take a few days. AND damn these guys must not get a ton of sleep.

We know it is TORMARKET that did the DDoS attack because they are the only site that mentions their Codebase on the home page, a little subliminal clue for them as they would realize what DPR was talking about, along with their "tall claim about how GOOD their security can not be hacked or subject to DDoS Attacks which it was",  on the 10th of December, but, it didn't affect any members ordering or withdrawing btc like theirs did to SR, so yesterday they had a DDoS Attack as well, most likely a retaliation from SR to show them what they can do. The DDoS was fixed in a day with no login errors but I think SR wanted to send the message without fucking with business, [UNLIKE TM DID], that they can and will put a DDoS Attack on your site as well TorMarket, THIS TIME it was just a very weak one you could immeaditlt fix, just to show you they can implement DDoS attacks on you too! Clever thought, but this wouldn't work.  Over the weekend the problem was that the Tor layer of the server was exhausting its resources and couldn't function, which means the connection requests probably wouldn't even be getting to the webserver in the first place.

The attack is no doubt automated and any distribution channel can easily be monitored by the attacker.  By the time anybody found the URL it would almost certainly be useless.  Though when I really think about it, sure, you might have a handful of minutes if you were vigilant about it... but honestly that much effort for minutes to such a small portion of users really isn't worthwhile.  It's time better spent on fixing things rather than playing whack-a-mole.

Wouldn't it be the Tor nods they are connecting there bots with to ddos the site, and if they have enough bots connected to the nod's is it possible triangulate the location of the server for the site? Via the return time for the data and so on? I think it could be done and seeing how 1.0 was dossed for some time and it is kinda close for the timeline of the feds finding the location of the server to when 1.0 was being dossed? Is it Possible its law enforcement?

Also why isn't sr 2.0 using  mirror servers and say after so much traffic is connected to one server the data load is redirected to one of the mirrors and once that mirror hits max load the data is transferred to another?

bmr kept changing urls but if you typed in bmreloaded it was a gateway that redirected you to the current url.

Ahh.  Well the tricky part is that in order for a hidden service to be reachable at a given .onion URL, the server has to actively publish what's called a hidden service descriptor -- basically that's the information necessary for a client (like our web browsers) to connect to the hidden site without actually knowing where it is.  There are lots of hidden service directory mirrors that we can all connect to & request a copy of a given hidden service descriptor.  The details of how one is chosen and all of that are kind of vague in my memory, but I don't think they'll all be updated immediately and simultaneously.  Changes kind of ripple quickly across them, hence my saying the URL would probably be useless to us by the time we got to it.

Good sign believe it or not.  It means the site is actually there and publishing it's hidden service descriptor.  You were able to connect to it long enough to download the login page HTML.  However, when you tried to download the captcha after your web browser noticed the HTML includes it, it couldn't be reached (again).

I don't think they would have the DDOSERS ip. first off i'm sure the person doing it is controlling a BotNet giving the comps commands an the bots would have to use the tor network to connect to the site. So there is prob 4k+ comps hitting the server over and over with a request.

I for one respect that DPR isnt telling us who is behind the attacks. It would only give them more satisfaction. He knows that (s)he check the forums frequently. This wont be the last of attacks im guessing. However with each one it only improves our infrastructure. If this would have happened when SR1 was originally up who knows if the site would have ever become what it did. I commend the tireless work DPR and the rest of the staff have done. I think the problem is that some things can't be put off, and a small portion of users (though I imagine a huge percentage of new or low volume vendors) even bother with the forums.  What that translates to is a notice being useless because almost nobody would notice the warning before it was necessary to actually pull the market down to do something.

Planning is wonderful, but let's be honest: even getting coffee in the morning doesn't go according to plan surprisingly often, and you're asking for reliability from a still-pretty-new excessively illegal drug bazaar.  Just to try and give a little perspective.  That said, you're absolutely right: I don't know why the entire 1 vendor I trust enough to order from at this point is still taking orders at the moment, but damn am I grateful he is...

If I ran this site i would have at least 10 servers synced with a server no one had the address to.

each server would allow a set amount of traffic and route any other traffic to one of the other servers.

the main that wouldnt be public would hold the data base of accounts and the info would be pulled from it.
Or you could. When a transaction was made the mirror servers could verify the info against the database server.. OR you could run a real time update for the mirrors from the database. You could code it to where if a
new item was added by a vendor on any of the servers it would auto sync it to the other servers countless ways this could be done to stop ddos attacks. I know the site is fairly new and the money isn't to where sr1.0 was but servers are cheap... Can't make money with down time though. Have to spend money to make money. My Fav saying.

As skeptical as I am with Tormarket, the site is actually really fast and very well designed.  And there are a ton of extremely reputable vendors on it.  Too bad Tessellated (my favorite vendor) won't take the plunge.  As a buyer, I have no problem using the site on a limited basis.  You don't really have a whole lot to lose buying selectively in small amounts and not storing coin anywhere.  I'm a fan and I'm about as old school as it gets from the SR1 days.

This whole thing with SR2 is very frustrating to me.  The intermittent nature of the downtime is really annoying me at this point.  DPR, just BRING IT ALL DOWN until you figure things out if you have to, but this whole thing where the site is up for 3 out of 24 hours for each of the last 3 days is just stupid and makes it worse.  I finalized 3 orders in a matter of 1 hour last night because I was forced to by the vendor and who the hell knows if the vendor even received it.  I'm fine if things don't work out because that is the risk I take but I think there is a cleaner approach to dealing with this.  Transparency is *everything* in these trying times and we are getting none of the sort.

More updates, and certainly more details, would be a really good step towards creating a more significant level of confidence in all of this.  These once a day, one sentence updates that make it sound like we are moments away from "normalcy" are getting old.

As skeptical as I am with Tormarket, the site is actually really fast and very well designed.  And there are a ton of extremely reputable vendors on it.  Too bad Tessellated (my favorite vendor) won't take the plunge.  As a buyer, I have no problem using the site on a limited basis.  You don't really have a whole lot to lose buying selectively in small amounts and not storing coin anywhere.  I'm a fan and I'm about as old school as it gets from the SR1 days.

This whole thing with SR2 is very frustrating to me.  The intermittent nature of the downtime is really annoying me at this point.  DPR, just BRING IT ALL DOWN until you figure things out if you have to, but this whole thing where the site is up for 3 out of 24 hours for each of the last 3 days is just stupid and makes it worse.  I finalized 3 orders in a matter of 1 hour last night because I was forced to by the vendor and who the hell knows if the vendor even received it.  I'm fine if things don't work out because that is the risk I take but I think there is a cleaner approach to dealing with this.  Transparency is *everything* in these trying times and we are getting none of the sort.

More updates, and certainly more details, would be a really good step towards creating a more significant level of confidence in all of this.  These once a day, one sentence updates that make it sound like we are moments away from "normalcy" are getting old.

Hiniguel, I agree with you.  My point is, do it right or don't do it.  This bring the site up shit for a couple hours and then down is ridiculous.  Just announce the site is DOWN until further notice and perhaps you wouldn't have thousands of people hitting the F5 key incessantly throughout the day making it worse.  It is the lack of COMMUNICATION that is disappointing.  I'm not suggesting they should bring an unstable site back up for people.  I can't imagine you disagree.

Vendors should let everyone know if they're still shipping orders that are not finalized yet. It would save a lot of buyer worry.

This assumes that the vendors are able to login to see your order.

At this point, it's really a mess, you don't if your money is lost, the package is going to arrive, the whole thing will crash, or everything is just fine if you wait it out.

Exactly my point.  I had to submit and finalize TWO orders during what ended up amounting to be the 1 hour SR was actually up in the past 12 hours and I highly doubt the vendor even got the order details so now I finalized and am in complete limbo.  It will work out because I've dealt with this person for almost two years but it's still nerve racking and honestly, it doesn't need to be like this. 

The admins are really dropping the ball here by being so vague with everything.  I am completely understanding of the issues and the difficulties and I don't fault them for any of that.  Just shut the damn site down until after New Years like they are doing in 10 days anyways.  Figure your shit out and bring it up when you have BASIC features like auto-finalize and DELETING MESSAGES enabled and hopefully you can keep the site up for a fraction of the up time the other sites manage to accomplish.

And for whoever is going to say those other sites are a shell of what SR is, reputation wise you might be right but those "other" sites have 30-40% more listings and that's even with some majorly established vendors refusing to touch the site, nor do I blame them.  Much easier being a buyer than a vendor on these newer sites that's for sure.

In the end I just want my SR back but what's going on here is straight up annoying.  I'll stop the venting now.. I went days keeping this bottled up before I couldn't keep quiet anymore. lol.  I want to believe DPR, I really do.  Make us proud!  I would like nothing more than to line your pockets in the form of commisisions from my activity.

We just have to be patient.

It is not "them" or the site ops putting it online/offline for sure.  They could be changing some things and still dealing with DDOS attacks, or they could be done with that but there needs to be admin changes or work done due to some things that were moved/changed. I am not nearly the guru Nightcrawler or some people are here, but I understand a good bit.  It is a little more complex than just on/off.

Remember everyone, the best way you can support SR and staff is by using the marketplace. The taxes help pay for security upgrades and strengthen the community with every purchase that is made.

I see many people that want to help in any way they can, but unfortunately most of us are not as technologically savy as DPR and the other admins. So lets leave the security to them and we will foot the bill;)

I agree with you on that level, however, I am a bit disappointed because I was just about to buy Christmas presents for my wife. No....I am not buying drugs for her, but rather some stylish and tasteful apparel from vendors in that category. Now I am unsure even if I bought today that they would arrive by Christmas. The fact that he gave vendors a secret link to still be able to send out orders gives me all the faith in the world to DPR. Would you rather have a 2-3 hour window a day to place orders and know they're going to get shipped or would you rather do what Black Market Reloaded did and instead of working themselves to the bones to keep the site up they just took it down till they could take time away from counting their money to fix and protect the site. Or better yet would you rather everything run as smooth as sheep market did? If you need drugs that bad then resort to what you did before. Call your local drug dealer.
