I am assuming this is because of Coachella. I have just logged on for the first time today and he has pissed me off with all his trolling. I mean, has he really not got anything better to do?

A three day time-out? What about afterwards? You know that troll is just going to come back. I think bringing back the 50 posts newbie rule after the launch would be a solid move.

On that note, I need to post more...

Good call.

Something like the 50 posts rule should be implemented again since some people have no life  ::)

The 50 post rule won't stop him, it will barely slow him down.

It will discourage him from going through all that effort. Normally I don't like rules that are based on an exception, but this seems only logical.

It is quite sad that this is necessary, but on the other hand, it feels like quite a relieve that he is (hopefully) gone for a few days now.

I think the moderators (especially Synergy) deserves a round of applause for his work! I think he has had quite a stressful day with damage controle, and I think that it is rather commendable that he has been able to keep his cool all day.

It did not discourage him whatsoever on the old SMF so why do you think it will be different now?

Anyway points of difference aside I have had enough discussing him.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone.

It is so difficult to manage spam on hidden web forums where you can't block IP addresses. Although I guess people will get around that too in clearweb using anonymisers.

I imagine the time is better spent working on the marketplace than on spammers.

Sad that this has to happen. I had an idea that might help. Instead of implementing a 50 post rule, we could limit postings from those who have a poor positive to negative karma relationship. Say a newbie has 1/-4 or something that shows their is a disparity between the two in a negative swing. I don't know the exact formula, but the concept is there. It could be accumulative in punishments like having to CAPTCHA, then u get locked from posting for 5 min, then 10, and so on the bigger the negative to positive karma relationship. I understand that over time people get negative karma, but it should be more positive than negative.

Hey mods,
if you ever do this 50 posts rule again please make it available for old users to post everywhere, since some of us, like i, read the forums frequently but post only once in a while, usually for important things...
I have no problem at all to pass the 50 posts barrier again like in the old forums but it's just exhausting.

I managed to totally avoid this latest coachella catastrophe by sheer luck. If I ever got my hands on that pestilential swine, I'd feed him LSD before severing his achilles tendons.

Hmmm... I wonder if a time limit from registration to being able to post on most subforums, perhaps of a week or two, could be implemented instead of the post limit (or possibly in conjunction with it somehow).

Of course, I suppose the likes of Coachella and JtB would register a few dozen at once...

Thanks, dawg!!

Agreed!

I'm really only posting my agreement so I am one step closer to not ending up there myself.

Being somewhat new to these forums and only posting when I have something constructive to say it makes getting to 50 posts difficult. I have been on other forums that require 5 karma to vote for sources and that helps keep spamming down. I guess newbie jail is necessary but it promotes spamming your way out instead of quality posts. Shitheads that make it hard on all of us have all day to spam to 50 so you still only hurt those like me who want to contribute and won't be able to

I understand that over time people get negative karma, but it should be more positive than negative.

too complicated and open to abuse.  just lock em in newbie hell.  :D

Agreed!

And my axe!

how about implementing a one week non posting period between registering and being able to post for the first time.  Assuming you really can link all accounts together even if (s)he makes a bunch of them each day, as soon as one is identified you can also kill any others that are just sitting there waiting to be used.

The idea is that for the first week people read and then once the week is up they're good to post and hopefully have a better idea of the board behaviour and etiquette.  I once registered on a forum that did this and by the end of the first week it was a relief to be able to post (like the big kids school) but was really useful as it means you don't go wading in and pissing people off from the get go.

I will suggest we have an approval system for new accounts. When someone register they will get a unapproved account which have limits to how much it can post, the color of these accounts should be different so they are easy to spot. Starting of new threads is not allowed and you can only post once an hour. The approval is done by users with minimum of for example 100 posts can approve as many as they like by clicking on button for this at their posts or/and profile. When a unapproved accounts get approval from maybe 3 or 4 different users they will have same access as regular accounts.

Moderators should be able to see who has approved who, because if there is someone who have made 3-4 accounts which are able to approve they can use these to approve spam/troll accounts. But if this happens it will be the same accounts which approves several spam/troll accounts, so they can get a warning not to approve more accounts or they will be banned.

I'm quite sure this will work, because it isn't difficult to distinguish a troll/spam account from a normal account.

These forums are based on a template. One doesn't just reprogram them like that. The 50 posts is simple and elegant.

Also agree with a one week period between registering and a first post as a good move.

Something needs to happen to curb trolling and a 50 post rule seems excessive, but most likely necessary

I know there's a function to ignore someone on these forums, surely that function could be adapted so it can be applied to any troll and then nobody could see their posts, it would drive them crazy to get no reaction from their posts :)

Some people would tend to think you're a homosexual talking like that, but 5% would just think you're a bit of a wanker.
