Get rid of the e-mail requirement!
« on: October 08, 2013, 09:03:57 pm »
Why am I asked for mail address when I registrer? I know most people wouldn't write a real mail there, but if you are required to enter a mail address it is more likely someone write one without thinking.

I totally agree,  it's a asking for trouble and I could see it putting people off registering.

Anyone who cant figure out that they can put a fake email there shouldn't be allowed to register. Allowing people who WANT to put an email there does serve a purpose I suppose, and it doesn't stop anyone who doesn't want to provide one because they can easily put a fake one.

Email is built into the SMF software deeply. enter anything fake. silk@road.onion is good :)

Didn't the original SR forum have a little message beneath the box saying that a fake email is OK?

I seem to remember that.

We are still figuring out how to remove the email requirement, unfortunately the forum software has deeply embedded it into the code and if we remove it, it breaks a whole series of features so we are thinking of a way to handle it.

Could you hide the field and have it automatically filled with a random value *@*.com

Or dont hide the field so people that want to use their own email can edit the randomly generated value if they want

EDIT: a potential temporary but sloppy solution

Possible but it does bring on other errors and isn't a good clean fix. We are looking into a possible solution right now though.

Would likely only require a few lines of code on the registration page, but I would agree a cleaner fix would be better to wait for seeing as this isn't exactly a pressing issue that requires an urgent remedy

@DPR we know SMF and trying to take e-mail requirement our will cause more headache then worth. It can cause some security concerns that need to be patched also. The code is built around e-mail notifications. Simple to tell people to use fake e-mail.

You can't protect every user.
After you fixed this there's still the possibility for these people to write their real name or e-mail into their PGP-key, use names from clearnet forums, write s.th. linking to his identity and so on
At some point every user should use his brain. :)
Sincerely yours,

Agree - a simple warning to not use a IRL linkable email address will suffice. Suggest keep the functionality as is. Users need to be educated rather than merely protected from their actions  - I think that is a good philosopical base for design implementation...

Apologies for downtime - have had major IRL stuff to deal with - have not left the building - back soon...  BG

It could default to a randomly generated nonsense address.  A default like not@telling.onion could also work (as long as it does not need to be unique.)

Obviously the forum administrators are relatively new to SMF and are also testing features / SMF Modifictions on this live system. I feel really uneasy about this.
Things like this need to be thought of beforehand and tested in a closed environment - NOT on a live system with users.
Just my 2 cents. I hope the administration takes my advice...
As usual: Just saying.

The email requirement has now been removed.

Easy.
Generate random email invisible to user, remove that field for the UI.
SMF still get's it's email address and the user never sees it.

EDIT: derp, you got rid of it.
Now implement TrollTorture and HellBan mods
