Product Offers / Re: The Return of BlueGiraffe
« on: October 16, 2013, 08:46:39 am »
I have received 3 mails about this topic and I am going to lay down the official stance on this matter which will be the end of it so we may move on.

BlueGiraffe made a serious error and this was discussed at length on the old forums so I will not reiterate it, but he had the chance to disappear and become unaccountable for the leak in data, yet he chose to come forth about it immediately, accept the punishment and carry out some damage control overall which for vendors who hold a brand of product is a very courageous thing to do. As a result, the previous Dread Pirate Roberts allowed BlueGiraffe to continue to operate but his main account would remain suspended as a punishment for the problems caused.

In the new Silk Road the market will operate under my rules which I have adopted also from the old Silk Road market. Under regular rules yes BlueGiraffe should be banned permanently for not taking the proper precautions in protecting his customers privacy, but this was overturned to encourage other vendors who may ever unfortunately face similar issues to come forth about it.

[...]
The rules are very clear that leaks and saving of personal information is not allowed. And rules must apply to everyone.
An example must be made out of him or other vendors will keep storing information as well risking everyone without risking their privilege to be a vendor.
[...]

And: I understand the concern and the point raised that the most serious rule was violated and yes rules do apply to everyone, but as head of the market I have set these rules for the greater good of the community. Taking into account all of the events and aftermath around the problem however, I am satisfied BlueGiraffe's actions post-leak were in the interest of his customers and that sufficient lessons have been learned from this experience. Therefore I believe he/she is still a fit and proper person to bare the responsibility of being a vendor and permit him to begin trading again here as a part of my market.

Security / Re: POLL: Future Data Retention Policy

Keep the messages longer after user delete by encrypting will not be safe from live server image because keys will be in memory or on disk during live image.

That would be true if the private key was kept on the server but we would only keep the public key on the server to encrypt the data to and any messages or data which needs reviewing will be later manually decrypted by staff since they will hold the private key not the server.

How would bringing it up to you help? You going to ring up Ross and tell him the good news?

Edit: sorry,been a long day

We have the best interests of everyone at heart and we are privy to information not available in the public domain and for this reason, a person with good intentions may easily end up damaging the case. Contacting us at least allows people to ensure that doesn't happen and may mean we are able to assist in passing information to the relative places should it be beneficial to the case of Ross Ulbricht in his favor.

Please contact staff with your request to delete your account.

In recent days we've come under a spam attack from one or two individuals who claim to have information regarding the case, however at every inspection these claims turn out to be false. I believe claiming to have such information but nothing to back it up would not be in the best interests of Ross Ulbricht and I feel is just another troll incidence or they would come to me directly. If somebody did have information regarding the case, it would be better brought up to myself since posting it publicly may have unintended consequences since there is much information not out in the public domain to protect individuals.

When copying keys highlight the first to the last character carefully, if you start to drag from over blank space it will pick up other hidden forum objects and cause the white space error. You can also fix this by pasting the copied key into notepad, highlighting the white space and then replacing it with nothing to delete them all.

Security / Re: POLL: Future Data Retention Policy
« on: October 13, 2013, 03:51:56 am »
The above poll is only for how long users and vendors should have access to messages. Staff will have access to messages for a longer period of time in encrypted form so resolutions will not be effected by the retention period.

Myself and MettaDPR have already spoken. We have similar aims and agree being in competition is healthy, but we are not the same project. In the event one of our markets failed, we have made a gentleman's agreement we will accommodate for each others community to keep the idea alive. However neither is an endorsement of the other.

I have received a flood of messages concerning the recent "FBI Notice". I would like to reassure everyone this was a post by a troll and we have not received any real communications from the FBI. I would also wish to remind you this forum at this moment in time is legal, no illegal activities have occurred here. This is the message which was posted:

Security / POLL: Future Data Retention Policy
« on: October 12, 2013, 01:33:38 am »
Staff are currently discussing some matters behind the scenes concerning user security. I would like to ask you all to answer the following poll so we may make a more informed decision. Comments may be placed down below but we will not respond to inquiries. This poll is only asking for how long YOU need to retain data on-site.

Edit: The poll is only the time users and vendors will store messages. Staff will have access to them for a longer period but in an encrypted form so if the server is seized, they will still be unreadable to law enforcement or hackers. Therefore the retention period above has no effect on resolutions.

Silk Road Discussion / Re: What happened to Oracle?
« on: October 10, 2013, 05:50:42 pm »
The matter has been taken up privately, there is nothing more to add at this moment in time. The people who are constructing the new market are well versed in security and what may be perceived as a risk to some may not be one because we do not disclose our defensive mechanisms.
