Silk Road Discussion / Re: Does Silk Road have a tumbler?
« on: December 04, 2013, 12:44:15 pm »
Thanks for the clarification.

The recent btc tumbler (bitcoin fog) posts are rather disturbing.

I can see purchases might take more planning on the Buyer's end of things but then we just don't know how safe we should or could be.

Whilst I still do not believe bitcoinfog to be wholly effective when used on its own, I do recognize it is part of a larger and more sophisticated system to protect one's identity. The incident regarding the tracking of Sheep's funds was more to do with the fact the sheep owner did not observe several basic mixing good practices and the size of the bitcoin transactions. I will be posting a mixing guide sometime later today, perhaps after lunch or tomorrow depending on how much work needs to be done.

Silk Road Discussion / Does Silk Road have a tumbler?
« on: December 04, 2013, 12:15:03 pm »
The moderators have pointed this out to me now that this is a hot topic for discussion at times and people feel unsafe at the apparent lack of a tumbler in the Silk Road market. I would like to correct this misunderstanding as Silk Road does actually have a mixing system in place and has done since the start.

We are currently using the same system that the former Silk Road market used, which is to use deposits as a funding pool and by having thousands of addresses with a low volume of bitcoin in them enter the general pool of addresses. Once a withdrawal is made, a random selection of addresses is chosen by the system and is used to fund the withdrawal for a vendor with the rest entering individual change addresses.

As I said initially, this is the same system that the old market used and generally many users felt this was sufficient protection as it fulfills the objective of not making it possible for the buyer to identify the vendors bitcoin address through following the blockchain alone, although as yet both systems are not perfect as it still allows an adversary to identify what is a deposit and what is a withdrawal if they can make enough deposits to at least have a small amount of their initial bitcoin in most withdrawals (requires at least $2,000,000 in bitcoin at this moment in time).

Our current work long term is geared towards a better solution than this which should make the identification of withdrawals and deposits far harder. The exact plans of this proposed solution I do not wish to discuss publicly, but I hope this post has cleared up the confusion surrounding the matter and remember to always use at least 1 other method of mixing your coins.

SilkRoad will not work with violent organizations, I have made this clear from the start and therefore I will enter no pact or agreement with cartels or other groups who use fear and violence to further themselves. Who knows however, hopefully the growers of many drugs will find SilkRoad to obtain a fairer price for their crops rather than being intimidated to accept the lowest wage possible by the large organized crime groups.

It will keep getting deleted for the multiple posts of this. If you want to keep making multiple posts, I will ask the moderator team to delete every version of this on sight so do not try to frame this as an attempt of censorship when you are spamming here. I would also like to point out two iterations of this post were deleted by the person posting it, not any of my moderators.

As others have pointed out, we receive a lot of criticism for many things as we cannot please everyone but such threads are not deleted, only those which are obviously Coachella or in violation of our rules. We do not use Coachella as an excuse to mass delete posts either - many of the staff here have worked on the team for a while now and as their full time profession so when it comes to identifying stylography of a meth induced spammer, they have become quite proficient.

Our team are human too, we can make mistakes, so let's cut this masquerading of small mistakes and overblown fanaticism of censorship and get on with what we do best - that is doing something positive for the community.

I am proud to announce Silk Road is doing a special Christmas period giveaway over the next few days/week! There are 3 prizes on offer: $1,000, $2,500 and $5,000! Enough to brighten anyone's Christmas!

So - how do you enter? Quite simple - just post in this topic. You are allowed to post here once every 12 hours. If you do more than 1 post in 12 hours both posts in that time frame will be disqualified from entry. That is all there is to it!

We have selected 3 post numbers at random and below are the MD5 hashes of those 3 post numbers. We will provide the plaintext version of these so you may verify the winners yourself once we announce them. For anyone trying to cheat by hashing random numbers yourself we have already thrown in random garbage at the end of the string to ensure fair play.

$1,000 Winner: 2dc2d7e907c9176b98bf541af5cc2449

$2,500 Winner: 050ec4b7dc007ee5ccad385caa01a3bd

$5,000 Winner: 1e4cbd844e90b51485cc04e39153bea1

Date: 12/3/13
Time: 22:00 UTC

I would recommend everyone saves a copy of this PGP signed message so there can be no chance of accusations of cheating/collusion. The best of luck to everyone entering and I will announce the result once all prizes have been won!

Thanks, Bob. Is there a reason for the downtime?

Some staff have requested time off and I would not like to build up a large backlog of work for them on return if I was to manage the site alone. In addition, this gives the development team time to test new feature implementations and fix an array of issues without stressing about the server status.

Dear all,

This is an advance notice to let you know Silk Road will be closed for several days either side of Christmas day starting on the 22nd and lasting until the 28th. Only the market will be effected and the forum will remain online throughout with limited support.

All funds in escrow at the time of closure will be frozen as will any due dates. I would advise all buyers to place orders with vendors early to ensure they receive their products on time before the temporary closure and can finalize their funds with vendors.

Off Topic / Re: DPR threatening to dox Coachella
« on: December 03, 2013, 05:04:26 pm »
I did not threaten to dox Coachella, it is not something I believe anyone should do no matter what crime or annoyance they commit because when I start using my personal opinion to gauge what is and isn't acceptable when it comes to endangering people, that is simply a circumvention of my word that I will not use violence as I promised from the outset of Silk Road.

I do want to remind you however everyone who doesn't use PGP and hasn't had their orders shipped that I do have access to your address for now (although we are working at ways to stop even us from seeing such data), so I actually have the dox of about 2000 people at any given moment - this is exactly why you should use PGP.

So no - that was not a threat but a nice reminder that just because I know something does not mean I should parade it around because it might make me feel special and that the power to responsibly handle sensitive data is a duty not to be taken lightly.

56
Ah so you're into playing games Coachella? You see I already have your full dox and enough money to go on a life-long meth induced psychosis, but I have standards, so let's be civil.

Security / Re: SR's take on BMR's "Tor is not big enough"
« on: December 02, 2013, 05:08:01 pm »
We do have thoughts on this, but right now it would not be in our interest to share them. We have a team dedicated to problems like this who do nothing but think of solutions and try such things out, an R & D department if you will who have a huge budget to protect us. No problem is too great to overcome but we must be certain before moving to it because as I have already highlighted, we are now on the frontiers of this technology.

You should never rely on 1 tumbler. Bitcoinfog has known owners who can easily be bent to the will of governments to reveal data and the only repercussion of them lying about keeping logs will be non-criminal charges and we are not in a position to take them to the courts are we. If you have a single point of failure, you are entrusting your freedom to another party.

Off Topic / Re: About SR2 progress..
« on: December 01, 2013, 11:14:20 pm »
@hcnoise - since you wish to try and insult my staff I will highlight some of the things you have gone wrong at.

You have not accounted for the traffic this site receives. Indeed try to replicate our traffic on many other hidden services and they simply cut out and also fall victim to traffic analysis attacks. Ours is still functional and we take it offline for upgrades without leaking information. We do not simply install Tor, we have a custom compiled version to suit our needs and right now we are hitting the limits that Tor network can support.

As a programmer you should also be aware of the amount of flaws which can cause security problems. Just a single mishap can cost us the entire database and bitcoin which to law enforcement and hackers around the world is a huge reward and across Tor, the risk is reduced of them ever being caught. We are not some simple startup or web development company, we are the largest online black market in the world and we have knocked back thousands of attacks already not just from wannabe hackers or people with tall claims, but government agencies like the FBI, DEA, NSA and others.

The site is not the same as a month ago. If you were a vendor you would realize this as much has changed on the back end. We also have over 200 mails a day to answer per staff and keeping up with bug reports too. Many vendors have already appreciated that we listen to their requests and implement things to make life easier for them as well as improve their security.

"and my viewpoint comes from almost 10 years of programming... I wonder what's yours"
My viewpoint comes from owning the largest online black market in the world and if media attention is anything to go by, we are already bigger than the last Silk Road. You can be a programmer for 60 years but that doesn't mean you are any good at it or that you'd last a minute creating this place. I am now the most wanted man on the internet, I have every world government after me and I am holding this together with everything I have. Now that is my viewpoint, I wonder what's yours? If you want to try and lecture my staff and users at least make sure you know what you're talking about which in my proven experience here, you do not.

SilkRoad has decided at this moment in time there is not enough research into I2P and it has too many inherent weaknesses to open shop there at this moment in time. When it has been subject to several in-depth papers by world leaders analysts, then we will reconsider.
